Just replacing kick with the middle and snare with sides is like buying drumsticks after you first decide to take up drumming, it's only the first of many steps. Anyway, it's just advice or opinion, it's obviously your choice whether or how you continue with the djembe and the videos. Cheers.
@danolar That's not all I did. I know very well that replacing kick and snare is basic. But is replacing a whole 10(?)-piece kit graduating from the middle to the side while and trying to replicate each hit? Especially trying to replicate the kick drum while he's using both hands as well!
I'm not claiming that my video is perfect, or even that good, just that I think your criticism is unjust. I feel that either you did not understand what I was trying to do or cannot hear it.
Other than that, I found that, as far as hand drums go, you can't just drop the fault on the drum being small or limited. Colouring the beats, speeding up, adding lots of in-between strokes makes for good percussion. Look at all the darbouka masters from the oriental countries.
Location is not an issue. It's true that anyone can post anything on youtube, for many it's just a hobby thing, so I'm really not trying to diss you or the fact that you posted this video (and I think you understood this already). Your djembe sounds are at a huge difference from vadrum's sounds, this makes it a bad recording, they are not equal and you can't really tell if you're screwing up the hits or the drum is or maybe just the recording, that's why I think it's bad quality.
@danolar I think you should either blame your ears or monitoring environment, 'cause I can hear each and every hit of my djembe and tell that most go along with what vadrum plays, with some obvious mistakes (it's certainly not perfect, just a bit of fun)
I am also a sound engineer, so know how to record at high quality. I used a nice little omni condenser, which is pretty flat and gives a realistic sound.
The drum can't screw up the hits, but is quite limited in its sound.
The djembe has much more to offer, rather than just sixteenth notes and very bad recording, man. I don't doubt your drumming abilities but what you play in this video is... well you understand
@danolar I completely agree, however I was trying to simulate vadrums playing on the 1 drum (djembe). I also don't think the recording is that bad compared to a lot of what you hear on YouTube. The drum pretty much sounds like that in person. Granted I could have recorded it in a nicer location, but it was a bit of improv.
@danolar In fact, looking back I think I did quite a lot with the djembe. The bassy middle I used for kick drum. The high pitched edge I used for snare. Everything in-between I used for toms. The only thing I couldn't simulate was the cymbals.
Granted there are a few bits where I fuck up, but on the whole I'm quite happy with the unpractised performance.

In the end, it's only a matter of opinion. I think you understood mine and I think I understood yours, so that's that. Good luck!

@danolar Yeah, you're right. Cheers

@danolar I very much agree, but not when you're trying to replicate a song.

I like vadrum more than the other guy, he's dumb because he is using just one drum and vadrum is using like 15 (including cymbals)
metaldrummerboy12 2 years ago
Why is that dumb? Being able to play almost exactly what 1 guy plays with 15 instruments with just one? I though it was quite clever.

Check my other videos to see me playing 15 "drums".

From the excess of two snares, to just one man and his drum.
I enjoyed this one P Monk.
