the song comes from the bible verse Luke 17:33 "Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it."

It means that to anyone who gives the control over to God (lose your life) will gain eternal life in Heaven. Ever heard the phrase, "If Jesus is your co-pilot you should change seats." as Christians we are called to have faith. Let God decided what is meant for us.
