Hi Cap, one movie that stands out to me in this respect is Alien 3. The theatrical release doesn't make sense in parts because the studio made cuts. Entire parts of the story were left out and the tone of the movie changed. Some reasons for character actions were unexplained and it ended up being a slasher/chase movie. So, no wonder audiences were lost/dissatisfied. The extended version, in my mind, is superior to the poorly scripted, but visually impressive Alien Resurrection.
I'm sorry Lord of the Rings is just as long and as complex as Watchman and deserves a 12 hour treatment (extended cut I'm talking about), just because you don't see LOTR as complex as a story other people might think its just as complex as Watchman....I hope this makes sense.
I don't really care how many versions of a film are released as long as they are easily differentiated from one another. I do hate it though when the theatrical version of a film is not available in the same quality as the directors cut. I prefer the theatrical cuts of "Hell Boy" and "Amadeus", neither of which are on bluray. It took them 6 years to release the theatrical version of "Superman the movie" on DVD after the extended version came out. Luckily both are now available on bluray.
Directors cuts are necessary when they show that the original vision of the film was better than what was released in theaters. Daredevil is the perfect example of studio interference ruining a movie.
It seems to me that alot of directors cuts today are really just extended cuts with the Directors Cut label on it. I could be wrong but I think that Hollywood ( or whoever puts DVDs out) wants to resell the movie but knows most aren't into extended cuts so they name them directors cuts.
I own the Watchmen (The Ultimate Cut) boxset and I do prefer it with the Tales of the Black Freighter subplot and other things, it makes it feel a tiny bit more complete, not to the level of Daredevil's Director's Cut where it made it complete in general.
A lot of the reason movies are cut for time is simply how many showing can a theater have in one day in relation to its budget. If it's a long expensive movie then there is a smaller profit margin.
One movie I prefer the director's cut for is The Hangover (the original, not the shitty remake ... I mean sequel) which adds 2-3 scenes in that are very good jokes and a scene at the end that covers an unanswered question about how the dad reacted to the guys trashing his car in Vegas.
I also prefer the Donner extended version of the original Superman to the theatrical (the first movie. I like parts of the Donner cut but tend to prefer the theatrical version).
Director's cuts are fine when they restore the director's vision, which was altered either for time or ratings as mandated by the studio. The DVD era has blurred the line a bit because I think sometimes directors will shoot scenes just to put them in the DVD version in order to market it as a director's cut or extended or unrated cut.
Sometimes they go overboard with using "unrated cut" as a marketing tool. The "Priest" unrated cut is the same but the blood is color-timed more realistically.
I hate deleted scenes. Either a) they add nothing to the movie, or b) the scene is good and it makes you mad that they aren't in the film. My opinion on extended cuts is mixed, I've seen really good extended editions that I couldn't picture it without a scene, and I've seen an extended edition that ruins the pace and totally ruins the great original film.
I am generally okay with DC being released because most are actually Special Edition DVDs. For example, Elektra’s DC has audio commentary and making of documentaries whereas TC’s extras are substantially less. If you buy Blu-Rays, Donnie Darko and Daredevil not only have both cuts but ALL the extras from prior releases in one set.
i got a question- what do you guys think are the pros and cons of making movie adaption of super hero or fictional material using the concept of making it more realistic than outlandish *like batman nolan films*do u think it is better to have the movie stick to the fun of the original idea then make it more realistic/?
the green lantern extended cut was really silly to me because they add some really cool scenes that I don't understand shy they couldn't just put in the movie.
I know you like Buffy and Serenity was made by the same guy (I think). A lot of scenes, especially with Inara(?) was cut out. I liked that since she became more mysterious, more so since I haven't seen firefly before. Taking out those scenes added to the movie!
Hey Cap, here's something IREALLy think you guys should talk about. How George Lucas can't stop sucking the life out of his masterpeices. Like how he is gonna rerelease the star wars movies year by year just to rack in 2,000,000. ANd how it not started there, o at the prequels ,no I mean the Chrismas Special which my asshole friends tricked me into watching this year.
I personally like them especially with some comicbook movies! But yeah there are some where they just added back in a 3-5min bits! more than likely the few frames of violence in a scene they had to shave out to get a PG13 instead of an R so basically you're just getting a weak R rated version of the movie with no differences!
I like the Director's Cut of Hellboy better than the original theatrical cut! They didn't change the over all movie much but they added back in a whole subplot!
How did they not mention Daredevil? Just saying, it's pretty famous for being a poor movie made much better because of the Director's Cut. Maybe they restrained themselves from mentioning the obvious.
@DylanEagle96 LOL I was thinking that very thing when I edited this. But yeah, I was avoiding getting into another big DD Director's cut discussion-- we've talked about that adnauseum. And it's one of the first Superhero Rewinds I did.
I love the alternate versions of films, specifically when it's obvious that the studio butchered the film. Daredevil, I Am Legend, Alien 3 have superior edits out there and I'm glad about that. As long as the theatrical editions always exist alongside (fuck you Lucas), I say bring 'em on.
The Aliens directors cut is slightly better than an already near perfect movie. But The only two director's cut that is vastly better than the theatrical is blade runner (even tough the final cut is even better than that) and Once upon a time in america. With OUATIA, the theatrical cut is a travesty and the directors cut is a masterpiece.

As far as pointless scenes go I hate when a film has twenty alternate endings and they all look the same the ending they kept in.

We have Blue ray now and lots of space to give us the chance to watch the delited scenes and all the director's cuts in one movie ,or not.

The Star Trek The Motion Picture Blu-ray includes the theatrical version because the visual effects for the director's cut weren't mastered in HD.

Director cuts are usually pointless, and I don't like when directors needlessly change theirs movie - look what Lucas did with "Star Wars". :(

Still hoping that someday Marvel will release an extended cut/director's cut of TIH. I heard A LOT was cut from that movie(like a half-hour or more).

Most of the DC direct-to-video animated line feels like important scenes are deleted for time--especially Superman/Batman: Apocalypse.
