  • yo wheres oj

  • I lost all respect for Ben Vereen when he did that blackface routine for Reagan and his cronies back in the 80's. He was up there shuckin and jivin, like Bert Williams and Al Jolson combined. That was an embarrassing moment for blacks, just like Ted Danson wearing blackface and insulting Whoopi Goldberg at the Friar's Club while she stood there and grinned like a stupid "house negro".

  • @kalimaganeshshivan u right. him talkin about givin "praise & glory" to abc is a straight up house negro statement. smh...

  • @SuperMuseveni I give props to Alex Haley and the entire cast of "Roots" because they did an excellent job telling the story, what I don't understand is Ben Vereen doing that blackface routine for Reagan when he had just conveyed the deep seeded racism that "Roots" described. Even Cicely Tyson, Leslie Uggams, John Amos, Lou Gossett and Levar Burton, never did anything that embarrassing after "Roots". Ben Vereen was ostracized by other black actors for years after he did that for Reagan.

  • @kalimaganeshshivan i don't know about giving full props to alex haley. mayB limited props. LoL but i agree w/ u bout ben vereen's shuckin n jivin because he's pretty much doing that with his statements in this clip.

  • @SuperMuseveni Alex Haley had to fight tooth and nail to have his book published and having it made into a film series. Yes, he deserves full props.

  • @kalimaganeshshivan w/ Roots' popularity, Alex Haley had a singular opportunity 2 make a statement by utilizing his gathered info & taking back his ancestral name. in fact, even in the miniseries, u see how on kunta kinte's tomb, kizzy crossed out Toby & wrote in Kunta Kinte. meaning there's an importance in claiming your name & identity. his name remained haley. so it's cool if u feel that way and u should give him full props. in the context of history & impact, i say it'z an epic fail.

  • @SuperMuseveni How do you feel about the movie "Amistad", have you ever seen it?

  • @kalimaganeshshivan felt Amistad tried a little too hard to show whites in a sympathetic light. while there may have been sympathetic white folk, the sympathy portrayed onscreen was somewhat anachronistic; more like the way liberal whites would feel in our time than back then. but otherwise, amistad is great! GIVE US US FREE!!! LoL

how did you feel about it?

  • @SuperMuseveni Actually your feelings mirror my own when it comes to the portrayal of John Quincy Adams as being the most sympathetic yet unapologetic performance in the movie (Anthony Hopkins). There is no way in the real historical life of this man that he was that noble to Africans because he was a slave owner just like his constituents, Jefferson and Washington.

  • @SuperMuseveni The name Kunta Kinte was not the true name of Alex Haley's ancestor. Kunta is a Nigerian Oba word that refers to a state of mind and being in the African tribal aesthetic, while Kinte refers to any Nigerian or Kenyan African tribal colored cloth or tartan, similar to a coat of arms in Europe. Haley needed a name that sounded truly African since he did not know the true name of his ancestor (records were lost; oral tradition existed for him). That's why he didn't change his name.

  • @SuperMuseveni The word Kunta is often used in Voodoo and Santeria ceremonies when calling the Orishas (Spirits). You often begin the juju with Kunta Legba (you always begin with Legba because he is the keeper and opener of the crossroads to the Orishas), Kunta Obatala, Kunta Oludumare', Kunta Babalou, Kunta Shango and so forth. Kunta used in this sense refers to "the calling down and become part of me". The psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, refers to this as the id or the shadow self using archtypes.

  • Kunta Kinte!

  • Weird how the main star is the one who talks the least in this interview.

  • @CardiohallPictures he doesn't need to. the ones talking the most are the ones most hungry for work. LoL
