I went through the same thing. I fell in love and I was with this guy for 9 months. I then figured out he was cheating on me. Three to four months later, we were still friends because I didn't want to lose him completely, he started dating the first guy that I dated. I thought it was very awkward because we're from a somewhat big city and somehow they connected and started dating.
I live in a huge city but the gay 'community' is still relatively small. I have to remind myself that I'm a smart guy with worthy ideals and that sometimes the men in my city aren't looking for the same things as I am. Sometimes, if a person weighs you down or incapacitates your well-being you just have to let go and REMEMBER why you let them regardless who they choose to roll around with afterward. =P
I would say that it's very hard to remain friends with an ex unless the split was mutual. Otherwise, no matter how hard two people try, someone's going to get hurt in the long run. But i think you bring up great points about gay men in general, in that we date our friends and our friends date each other so it becomes much more hard to cut people out of your life. It also leads to much bitchier extremes when an ex dates a friend. Very though provoking :)

Something similar happened to me once. A friend of mine, with whom I made out a couple of times, was dating my ex boyfriend. But I wasn't really in love with him, so I didn't really care. After all, if they're happy, I am happy. However, they stopped seeing each other in just two weeks.

I had trouble dealing with the break up with my ex.... its been 7 months and he did the breaking but insisted so much in staying frionds but i refused and cut all sources of contact..... well at first i tried making the friendship work but it was driving me crazy watching him look for other guys while i stood there like an idiot hoping for him to take me back....... so to answer your question i really dont know how i would process it, just the thought of him dating someone else hurts me alot....
