No One could Touch The Supremes until about 1972, after Diana Ross & Jean Terrell left, The Supremes got their Asses Kicked & became Pointless & Irrelevant
@TheReturnOfBigBear The Supremes are definetly SUPREME! But, as for vocal talent and holding true to being a TRUE vocal group, the Three Degrees outshine the Supremes.
BOY THE HARMONIES ARE TIGHT.. ONE THING THAT THEY HAD ON THE SUPREMES .. AL THE GIRLS HAD BODS AND WERE SLAMMING...DIANA NEVER HAD A BOD LIKE THEM OR SHELIA... BUT I MUST SAY THAT FLORENCE BALLAD WAS THE BEST BUILT IN HER TIME WITH THE GIRLS .. AND CINDY BIRDSONG JUST HAD BIG BOOBS...BUT THEY HAD NO BODS LIKE THIS ... U GO GIRLS.. I LOVE TO SEE MY SISTAS LOOKING SEXXY AND CLASSY ...NOT OVERLY SLUTTING AND MOVING AS SUCH..BEYONCE TAKE NOTE
@sierria64 What has the Supremes and Diana Ross have to do with this Video? Can we Please stop comparing our beautiful Talented artists against each other? It aint about who had the best body is was about entertainment. True the Supremes lead singer didnt have a great body but NONE came close to the Glamour of the Supremes lead by Diana Ross. None. who cares about body? Its all about the voice. and The Supremes with Diana had Voices Glamour and Stage Presence. Not about who's built the best.
@blkshepherd OKAY...BUT ADMITT IT THESE CHICKS WERE SEXXY BEAUTIFUL AND SLAMMING.... NOT TO COMPARE BUT TO POINT OUT THAT THEY REALLY HAD A LIL SOMETHING EXTRA.....AND THE FACT THAT THEY HAD GREAT BODS... AND WORE THE OUTFITS TO SHOW IT OFF ..JUST AN EXTRA EYE CANDY FOR THE STAGE PRESENCE
I looked at this video a second time (for the first time) and realized that they were carrying 1990's Female Athletic bodies, back in the 1970's! I mean, they look like Female Gladiators with Hot Chocolate sex appeal dripping off the screen. I could have sworn I saw some Angela Bassett mixed in with some Alicia Keys and a touch of Dianna Ross.
I am so sorry that I could not have witnessed these Women perform LIVE in their prime! Doing so might have turned me into a nympho maniac.
I don't see these three Women "burdened by Disco," at all! I see three amazingly talented, unforgivably beautiful Women who actually have Vocals that carry their beauty and not the other way around. Sure the "Post-Ross Supremes" were awesome and there is no doubt about the incredible vocal talent and wildly sexy beauty of En Vogue. However, I don't see these three Ladies being upstaged by any Female group in ANY era! Over sold? Over packaged? Over marketed? I just see amazing talent.
@757LeftSeat I couldn't agree with you more, 757LeftSeat! As an example of their "amazing talent," I'd suggest you listen at 3:08 where the middle one (forgive me, I don't know their names) sings the words: "...Dirty, dirty!!" Listen to the (frickin') power, exactness and requisite gusto, all of it wrapped up in perfect diction, expression and passion! Not to mention the fact that each note is ON key? THAT, in my humble opinion, is a delicious demonstration of their "amazing talent."
Dont care who was the original..this line up was the BEST..and greatest hits..beginning with this one..year of decision, when will i see you again ..if and when..All with This lineup..reminds me of the supremes..once flo then diana left..the supremes Lost their magic and identity..Sheila Fergerson was their best lead sharing with Valerie..today its valerie and helen scott an original from the 60s but she lacks the power of Shelia who left after Fayette Pinkney who had the highest soprano
I agree about the songs given them as too easy for their talent. "When WIll I See You Again," was a pretty song, but easy too. Still, it is one of my favorites. I had one of their LPs and the girls were topless on the inside cover. It cheapened their image. Even this song is bawdy. As much as I love the Supremes, the Three Degrees had a harmony sound that was richer and more distinct- less Ooos and Aaahs and more real singing. Where are the original members today.
I liked how the group used to be like back in the 70s and 80s. But the group members changed so much over the years that it doesn't look like the group anymore. now the great songs they sang from the 70s sound horrible when they sing them now because it isn't the same members. It didn't make too much of a different when Helen Scott came because it was only one member that changed and she was in the group during the 60s. but when Sheila left, the quality of the group declined further.
I like the song a lot. I liked how the group was back in the 70s and 80s. but since there was so many changes to the group members over the years, I feel it declined their group's reputation and their quality of singing and performing.
@edwinachikere - Beyonces mother did all the costumes for Destinys Child - she must have been a fan of the Three Degrees - you can see the influence xx
@gummygobbler1 Yes I know that Tina did the costumes for the girls. I heard also that she tried to do when she was younger what she eventually did for Destiny's Child. I think Tina Knowles was ahead of her time. It was good that she was around for those girls and all of them including the two that were fired from the group managed to do well in varying degrees in the entertainment industry. I wish there were more people like her working with youngsters in entertainment.
@edwinachikere Everything comes back around in time doesn't it...check Grace Jones out for Lady GaGa's wardrobe, people go on about her being oh so original when in fact she has oh so copied a fair few of graces outfits. Peace
wen i was lil i would sing this so much,,,, pretend i was preforming with the brush as the mike,, memories, my moms album collection was so cool, we had so much music in our home*)
Great music, this was a hit in the Discos, would mix this with Gloria Gaynor's Honey Bee. Then Labelle's Night Birds. This was the best of Disco and fun dancing all night long.
They are gorgeous!! This is when women were naturally gorgeous! Look at their bodies! The curves and the smoothness!!! They were flawless!!! I love this!
@Bigjohnnywad the brides of funkestein were as dirty as they come, and that's what made them great. its the groove that's missing nowadays, not the class
this is really great. they're not lip-synching, the vocals are live and they seem to get more and more into it. fanastic music, voices and harmonies--and they were the most adorable girls, too.
this song is hot. the 3 DEGREES were totally underrated. this clips proves they could sing the yellow pages and still rock the house! love these girls! wonder where there are today..?
This Girls had been so sexy and so good , don´t forget the soundtechinc in the 70th was not comparable with today, they really had to sing with good strong voices !!
Nobody would dispute the genius of Gamble & Huff but the Three Degrees were almost over-produced, too slick. I saw then live several times. Anyone who says they couldn't sing is crazy, but were they burdened by "disco" I would say yes. Maybe their collective beauty became more of an attraction than their music too.If you look at a group like En Vogue their power was the diversity of their music. Despite their looks the music always came first. I don't know if thats true for the Three Degrees.
OK. I agree that they may have been railroaded by the prevailing musical trends, but that's the story of all girl groups of the era. They were selling beauty and glamour not musical credibility. Only the Pointer Sisters were afforded the luxury of experimenting with their sound. Between Gamble & Huff and Giorgio Moroder, the Three Degrees definitely fared better than most of their contemporaries, including the Post-Ross Supremes.
I agree!! From a "working" point of view, in their various combinations the Three Degrees may be the most successful of all the post Ross-Supremes girl groups, considering their success in Europe. There is much to praise about the disco era but many great groups overused those slick production (electronic) techniques and were swept away by its demise. Black music lost its earthiness. It opened the door for Hip Hop's street feel. I always wished the Three Degress were a little funkier, edgier...
I remember reviews of the time describing them (ironic given the intro), as three Shirley Bassies. There's fantastic video on here of them singing If and When from their Philly debut album. Their Roulette recordings were grittier. If I remember correctly, their manager Richard Barrett had something to do with The Fifth Dimension which explains a lot. Their sound lost a lot when Fayette Pinkney left and the Prince Charles stuff didn't help. They were vocally stunning.
The Three Degrees (Sheila/Valerie/Fayette) look and sound great, but I agree with what you guys are saying about their glamour and slickness. They are very commercial and mainstream. My favourite girl group of the era is First Choice: they were a little grittier and seem to have had the right balance between glamour, groove and soul. Unfortunately, they had only two minor hits in the UK, which means that most of their best work is virtually unknown over here :-(
Nothing sinister. They were his favourite group, I remember him getting up on stage to dance with them. Didn't help with the street cred. Ultimately, they were very classy ladies, there was never anything street about them and those were very different times. Then came punk and hip hop...
@BronzeVenus To be honest, the post-Ross still had more hits than the 3 Degrees (although I do love both groups)...When Will I See You Again was a monster hit, as was T.S.O. P but Jean, Mary, and Cindy had "Up The Ladder, Stoned Love, Floy Joy, and Nathan Jones as hits...not as big as When Will I, but hits nonetheless...
@BronzeVenus That's a shame but I think it's true. I can rattle off lots of girl groups of the day, but I can't think of a single group that has really withstood the test of time and the changes in musical trends.
These girls had every girl group beat! Singing, dancing, looks. The only thing the new girls have on them is lace front wigs! The Three Degrees didn't play! My favorite is the lady on the right. She was always so damn sexy!
It's a SHAME the music industry DOES NOT cultivate singers like these any longer. We consider the Three Degrees, The Emotions, and The Three Degrees to be the best. We'd like to see more from the industry.
Didn't see a black women's trio that looked that good until Destiny's Child came along! Saw the THREE DEGREES in concert last night 5-10-08 in Philadelphia. THEY WERE STELLAR!!!! STILL "PHYNE"...AND SANG LIKE THE DIVAS THEY STILL ARE! ...JUST AMAZING!!!
@kpitt1204 It's amazing that women looked like that on the norm back in the day. Whatever they are doing these days they need to stop and take it back oldschool because those girls looked GREAT!!!!
Great video Sound just like the record but live not too many groups can do that. What show and year was this and from what show and who is the lady host?. Thanks
can you say underrated they should have been way bigger then what they were

They were not great singers, but so classy! And it's typical philly sound!
The clothes remind me whose Shirley Bassey (the host) wear in the album "Something else". I think it's on purpose!

Not great singers? That performance blows me away! The vocal power behind those three is something else!
