I only came here because I was randomly clicking Isis videos (I love the Isis comments like yours). I usually go to the Isis videos that have the entire album for listening. You MUST listen to the entire album in order to get the spectacular feel of Isis as a whole.
i listened to this on my ipod while tanning in the carribean...the whole oceanic album... ignoring the fact that i believe it has to do with a suicide or murder/suicide...pretty gloomy concept. beautiful marine soundscapes and music all together. i made an isis fanpage with a good amount of people. havent updated it in years but check it out... its got a panopticon profile picture.
In all honesty, when I first started listening to Isis, I didn't care much for the lyrics. Now, after listening to Aaron's growling vocas for so long, I find it hard to listen to any other metal at all. He almost uses his voice as another instrument... Sure each of their albums has it's own background and theme, but you can tell in his delivery, the music comes first; the lyrics seamlessly blend in.
@Th3Emp3r0r the vocals i would say are an acquired taste. when i first heard of this band i said, "who the fuck would listen to this?". the more i listened to it the more it sounded better, and then became my favorite band.
Had tears in my eyes when they played this song live.
So thankful I saw these guys back in the days and the played the whole oceanic album, back to front. This is their best song, to me. So much emotion/ They were so good on stage.. Get back together...pleeeeeeaase
Through quiet meditation in complete sensory deprivation except for this album playing, I constructed an entire short story of what ideas came to my head from each song. I put them together and made a story. It would be the best fucking album/movie ever! :D
I love all you ISIS fans out there, you're some of the deepest and smartest people out there with a real appreciation for music.
In my opinion, Isis, is more of a full album band. What I mean to say, is that often these amazing songs lose a lot of that sort of flow, that feel to them, that they have when played with the others. This song, to me, is interesting, and pretty great, but put it together with the rest of the album songs, and damn... it's spectacular. You haven't listened to Isis if you haven't listened to a full album.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Talk about a long winded intro... very pretentious ... come on .. get to the point already, I'm bored to tears, not entering psychedelic euphoric bliss... then when it gets to it... Yawn... The production also sucks balls. Sounds like it was recorded with a four track in someone's garage.
i can careless what ppl say about this band. To me, Isis is one of my favorite bands ever. I love everything about them. It helps me chill and just think.
@Crepin1up I love hard rock, grunge, alt rock, metal, and generally music that sounds intense or angry, but I consider myself a pretty mellow dude. I know plenty of ppl who listen to death metal and other hardcore shit but personality-wise you'd think they listen to indie. ppl are all different, ya know?
@Crepin1up I listen to a lot of metal; death, black, avant garde, some post rock-metal, radiohead, tool, etc, but I am generally a mellow person, and most people say the same when they meet me. Im intense in my passions sure, but i am a pretty laid back person, and i have a generous sense of humor. My point being, not all metal fans have an angry demeanor but, I'd wager that metal allows people to express anger/intense emotions through a healthy and cathartic avenue of creativity
Funny how I listen to explosions in the sky, and all the comments are about how good people feel after listening to it. I listen to this angry music while reading angry people's comments.
Now consider this:
Does music inspire a person's view on life? Or is it the person's view on life that inspire's their taste in music? Did this song cause these folks below this post to get hostile towards eachother, or were they hostile in the first place, listening to this song?
@Crepin1up "From 4 minutes on, yes. ISIS is angry"
Its kind of silly to compartmentalize this song in this way, as the minutes preceding the supposed 'angry' section are not particularly 'happy' or light in tone either. Also, I think adjectives like 'light' or 'dark' or 'angry' are not very useful in actually describing the music, especially since different people hear music differently, and ISIS tend to be more elusive/abstract conceptually.
@blackmanorigins I wasn't trying to tell anyone this band is bad. Not my taste, sure, but I can admit there's talent and emotion in this band for sure. Keep listening to what you enjoy. Also, awesome that you enjoy Explosions.
@Physc0o I don't see how my point is ignorant and close minded... In fact, no point was made. I just stated what I've witnessed: Explosions songs tend to have euphoric comments, whereas comments for this ISIS song seemed very hostile. It's just my opinion that this song seems angry, or violent, at least from 4 minutes on.. since it's heavy metal with the vocalist screaming I really don't know what; I think that's a fair opinion.
I never made a point so I don't know what you're talking about.
@blackmanorigins There's a difference betweenwhat I'd call "brutal" (death metal) and "angry" (Isis at times). Listen to those raw, emotional growls around 4:22. I've been a fan of post metal and death metal for a long time, but when it comes to expressing anger, I'd have to give it to Isis.
@davethehostage ISIS is brutal as hell i know but i would never call them angry i dont think that is theyr goal in music to be angry we all know that isis does some epic deep spiritual music (thats what i think anyways).
@blackmanorigins Early Isis was definitely angry. In fact if you read some interviews Aaron says they've mellowed out a lot over their career and lost a lot of their anger. This is fairly clear with increased use of ambiance and clean vocals in the last 3 albums. Thats not to detract at all. Its really the unique blend of anger/brutality and beauty that makes Isis the band it is/was.
Remember! Whatever sounds good to your ears may not be good to someone else...again, that's just human nature because we're greedy like that, but you also have to accept criticism too on the same token to keep your cool.
Are we perfect? No. There are Billions of people on this Earth, and we have different tastes. The real answer is this...If it's good to your ears and you like it, that is real music.
There is a lot of debate on what real music is... Our brains are 60% structural fat after all...we pick up the sounds, the pieces that we are used to hearing overtime.
Everyone of us makes assumptions and judge another person's taste in music as we grow older, and we debate...that's just human nature, and that's what I did last time to the people that disliked this song. Am I perfect? No I am not...real music is what you like, whatever you're used to listening to.
@EricSchwin22 oh really? so can you even tell what real music means?, and under what judgment it's good or bad? (you probably can't answer so don't worry, my point is done)
this song is so...hmm can I say pensive ? it puts me in days of sunshine from when I was 3 and it accumulates all sunshine moments in my life coz they are lost some time..@StromboliKicks this isnt light what I've been asking for.it's a downcast ..in end. its good song

i heard the spooky drawn out chords for this at the Wavering Radiant tour show in DC last weekend, last song of the set before encore. I broke down... I can't believe they played it - it is definitely one of their best songs if not the best. I had put the lyrics to this on my facebook page the night before in hopes I'd hear it... the gods smiled upon me :)
This song. Best isis song out there. And that's saying a lot.

I was looking for something that had a similar feel to Godspeed You Black Emperor!, but less long and drawn out, this wins.

Best song on Isis's best album. Seeing and hearing this on the Oceanic tour was mind-altering for me.

i heard the spooky drawn out chords for this at the Wavering Radiant tour show in DC last weekend, last song of the set before encore. I broke down... I can't believe they played it - it is definitely one of their best songs if not the best. I had put the lyrics to this on my facebook page the night before in hopes I'd hear it... the gods smiled upon me :)
