Would this have been as much fun had he rehearsed more? Ironically, Glen Campbell played and sang harmony on some of Dean Martin's recordings during his studio musician days. They later appeared on each other's shows. I once sold a sealed copy of Dean's Gentle On My Mind album on ebay.
Dean worked 1 day a week and his show lasted 9 years! Franks show did'nt last 1 year and was a flop, and he probably worked every day! now who do you think was the best! its simple Dean martin was the best of all time!!!!!
The man! Even though it's easy just to think of him as a great, slick, funny entertainer, he actually had incredible vocal control and was capable of great beauty. Check out his live version of I Left My Heart In San Fransisco to see how delicate he could be.
Who else did it all? Radio, recordings, night clubs, TV (and "live" too in the early days and essentially "live" on tape later for ten years), Vegas, and movies -- and with amazing success - and for decades! We can be thankful for the miracles of records, tape, and now DVD allowing Dean to provide fun/entertainment forever.
Interactions between humans was much more subtle back then, look at the expressions and movement on his face , you did not need to verbalise to get the laugh, these days you need to curse and swear and be soooo up front to get some laughs.
Big difference you do not see panache these days like you can see here from DM and Frank Sinatra, Gerry Lewis and others

I know they did this stuff without his knowledge. If you can get the book Backstage with Dean Martin you will find out a lot of tricks they played on him. He was probably making sure the chair was there . Either way it was funny and enjoyable.
Boy did they like to put Dean through his paces. He never knew what to expect. Even put a rose on his chair. He just kept on singing with the music not missing a beat. Now that is talent!!!
@sixchild19 It should also be noted that Dean never rehearsed any of his shows. he would constantkly be "messing up", but he was such a great "ad-libber", that it made the show even funnier!
I grew up with this sort of entertainment took it for granted but it was really good and funny don't think there's anything like it these days.
