  • heeey roy obinson wannabeeeeee

  • @christoffer32 Heeeeeey Moron!

  • I don't see anyone bitching to all the covers on youtube.

  • To me, a cover is supposed to be done as close as you can do it to the original OR completely different... and make it your own... that being said and myself being a huge fan of both AIC and Ryan Adams... (i know) I guess i'll have to bow out. Please disregard my bullshit. Thanks.

  • Exactly............a cover is YOUR OWN interpretation........Cardinals kick ass!!!!

  • i don't like it. it's way better the original.

  • at least he knows to yell a little instead of just singing it. the guy on slide screwed up on this version.

  • i dont care if a cover is supposed to be different...this is not even close to the original. no one can touch layne

  • @zackboomer - Don't think that was the intention here buddy

  • i dont know if this version is better than the original,

but ryan adams is better than that shitty band

  • what the hell is this horseshit? If you're going to cover a song, most of it should at least be recognizable. Thank god for the lyrics, or this doosh would just be rambling some crappy indie B-side.

  • @daJodge Pssst.... It's spelled "douche." Check your driver's license.

  • I'll never get why people argue over a fucking cover. If you enjoy it(as I did, as well as the original) GREAT. If you don't? That's fine too. But there's no reason to tell Ryan Adams to die because he covered the 'almighty' AIC. Sounds like a bunch of school kids arguing on the playground about which hockey player is the best of all time. Bunch of whiny cunts.

  • this is a great cover song!! of course it`s not alice in chains but come on! i think the worst thing i`ve heard is the flaming lips covering "darkside of the moon".THAT SUCKS!! that is a scared record that you don`t cover!!

  • I'm going to agree with many of the other posts; as I have been listening to AIC for 18 years now. I've seen very good covers of down in a whole, but this ain't it. He hit the chorus pretty decently, but the rest of the song took it to the hilt, i.e. sucked cock. He's better off covering a N'Sync song.

  • @Layne840 funny you say that...it's close enough /watch?v=Vbry4CN8whg

  • O_O

    where are my grenades

    WHERE ARE MY GRENADES!!!

  • i used to like ryan adams...

  • Some bands & artists can put such a remarkable personal stamp on a song that it's almost impossible for listeners to not associate the two. Alice In Chains has accomplished that feat with "Down In A Hole," & regardless of the ability/inability of Mr. Adams on this cover, he's fighting an insanely steep uphill battle.

It's impossible for me to hear this track without associating it with Layne Staley & AIC, & I imagine the same is true for many other listeners. Some songs don't need to be covered.

  • @flyingpinkwig I agree with you, ive tried tol isen to covers of this song, and nothing i have heard ever come close to the emotion that Layne gave it.

  • @flyingpinkwig "Music is everybody's possession. It's only publishers who think that people own it." - John Lennon

  • don't listen to this live version, the studio version off of his album follow the lights is much better

  • EPIC FAIL!!

i understand its a cover and the original will always be the best but he could have done a way better job

  • awful

  • u know what? As much as i love the original, this cover was not shit. it was less than half bad....he put some effort into it and they made their version.

  • no its not, a cover, its when you try to COVER UP the original with your own by performing the same way.

  • you say its better but your wrong, a cover is an attempt to try and sound similar, virtually meaning theres no way a cover will ever be just as good or better. fucken idiot

  • soooo not true. its taking a song you like and making it your own

    fucking idiot

  • I don't really understand the criticism for this cover. Of course its not better than AIC playing it; its their song-- isnt that the nature of virtually all cover song = not better than the original.. This cover sounds about as good as a cover can be, which is somewhere between decent and good..

  • hey you cant sing this tune man sorry my point of view of course but if you cover anything from aic it better be good

  • OMG, I totally hate this, The dude has a good voice and good musicians behind him, but he ruined this song:(

  • Wow i hope this guy dies this is the worst fucking cover i have ever heard GARBAGE CAN! Layne just rolled over in his grave.

  • In this stripped down cover...you can finally appreciate it this song for what it's worth. AIC did a nice job live with this song, but on 'Dirt' it's pretty avg. I won't kill the creator, but this BA version is way better.

  • yeah!Great cover but...... Alice in chains were, is, and still the greatest in heard in my fucking life, Alice in chains for ever!!!!

  • Never heard of AIC, this sounds great

  • There is no sense of despair that made AIC's version of this song so haunting. I think Ryan is too good of a singer to make this song - too smooth. Layne Staley was an absurdly emotive singer whose wail could be menacing and vulnerable at the saem time. Ryan Adams can't match the genuine sadness that was required to write these lyrics.

  • Wow!!! Layne/Jerry were/are great songwriters as well as Ryan, period...no comparison required..great cover...

  • well if AIC were to perform a Ryan Adams song you AIC fans would love it but i bet Ryan Adams fans would hate it.

No cover is ever going to be as good as the original composers version. But i believe Ryan did a good job of this. Its a hard song to play live.

  • Ryan Adams is a better singer and songwriter than AIC are. This cover tears up the unplugged version by AIC on youtube.

Although AIC are a stunning band this version appeals to me a lot more

  • your crazy..This is crap compared to aic version...He is playing aic tune and forever will be aic's tune, and Ryan Adams will never be a better song writer then Cantrell, Or Staley..."Would,Them Bones,Down In A Hole,Bleed The Freak,Shame In You" and so on...Go to the ear doctor tomorrow it might help then next time you say something stupid after listing to something

  • I think i just died a little inside, holy fuck nut this is horrible...

  • no disrespect but its not even close to the original

  • a cover version of a song isn't supposed to sound like the original, whats the point in making a cover if ou could just listen to the original?

  • thanks for ruining the song asshole.

  • this song is ruined now

  • This is a horrible version of the song!

  • you are a fuckstick. alice in chains is one of ryans influences. get your shit straight.

  • Alice In Chains craps on Ryan Adams...Your just to weak to handle something as real as Alice In Chains

  • Don't be a dick dude. You can't compare AIC and Ryan Adams. They are different kinds of music you idiot. He FUCKING handled it great by the way.

  • "don't be a dick dude" I'll say whatever I want when i'm speeking the truth..this dude will never be a big as aic were...Layne Staleys voice will foreve live on this guy will never amount..And I your right you can't compare them both b/c aic were to good to be put on Adams level

  • Well, you're not speaking the truth. You are speaking your opinion. I love AIC and Ryan Adams, they are both great in their own ways. But I would never compare the two bands, I know enough about music to not do that.

  • I have to be with you on that.

Nobody understands that a cover is supposed to be different to the original.

I think this rocks. He did a good job of it.

  • Yea, once you figure out who Ryan Adams is, you realize that he's a great artist, well..right behind Tom Petty of course. Tom will always be #1 in my book.

  • @ibanez6789345 you're wrong a cover is the same thing as the original, the other is call a Version of song

  • @Squaek You might even call it a "cover version"!

  • @ibanez6789345 you're wrong a cover is the same thing as the original, the other is a Version of song

  • アリスの歌がこういう形で、歌い継がれていくことに喜びをかんじます。

    ライアンの彼らしい世界観が、表現されていて、素敵だとおもいます。

    彼もアリスのファンだったのでしょうねー。

  • the album version is amazing! i prefer this to alice in chains...more vocally appealing

  • seriously?

comparing a song on vocals and putting AIC down? i dont get it... layne had such an immense voice - and with this song and what its about, surely the feeling and power layne sings it with makes it more appealing than anyone i have ever heard..

  • ryan could cover britney and still be worth listening to just to hear it.

  • Do not like!

  • damn that steel guitar makes the song

  • well hang on. what if AIC were to play a cover of one of ryan adams' songs? Ryan Adams fans would dislike it but AIC fans would dig it.

  • AIC "Would" never cover a Ryan Adams song...You know why? B/c he sucks

  • mr ibanez is talking Bullshit.

    This cover is a shame!!!!!!!

  • ryan adams has more talent than Alice in Chains. heaps more. his songwriting ability, his singing and his guitar skill shits all over AIC's

  • Layne had one of the most unique voices i have ever heard, and listen to A LOT of music and have done my whole life.. this guy can not compare - he actually sounds quite bland in relation... as for guitar skills i dont know of much of ryan's playing, Jerry could certainly rock pretty hard and was a good player..

as for 'songwriting ability' that is purely objective, and i'll make it clear that i do not agree with your statement, but im not going to slate it..

personally i dont like this cover

  • I respect Ryan for not covering this song the exact same way AIC did. He left the greatness of the band alone and made his own version of it. Nobody can match the unique sound of Layne's voice and Ryan is obviously not trying to copy that. He just loves the song and can relate to it. That's all.

  • Ok lets finsish this...Jerry Cantrell owns the "Riff Lord" award...Aic owns the Best Ep of all time "Jar Of Flies" (Only one to go #1) Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell "Best rock duo past 20 yrs" Sully GODSMACK (Oh yeah Godsmack go there name from aic) AIC owns the best war song in "Rooster" Jerry Cantrell is the best song writer in the past 20 yrs...Think before you speek. Ryan Adams is playing there song not the other way around so shut up

  • alright this guy deserves to get shot, what a discrace ti alice in chains

  • respect people. For those before and those now.

  • ur a fucking idiot! Layne's voice is amazing! This homo does an ok job but u can't compare it to when layne sings it.

  • I didn't. I just stated a fact so don't take your anger out on me. Down in a Hole is one of my faves and I don't even like this version but i'm not going to start throwing a fit over it.

  • This song is nothing to do with drugs and Layne never even wrote the lyrics. Jerry composed it after breaking up with his girlfriend so what we really need to know is what he thinks.

  • Calm down folks. Kudos for Ryan for covering this in an original way. He's got far more talent than the dozens of bland rock bands (Nickelback, Staind, Godsmack, Puddle of Mudd etc) who were supposedly inspired by Alice in Chains.

Alice in Chains rocked. Ryan Adams rocks. I'm sure Jerry Cantrell would like this. He's written a few country songs himself.

  • this sucks>>>>>>>.....

  • Noice, my favorite Alice in Chains song covered by a group of people who do it justice while taking the song to a new place artistically. Once again, Noice.

  • Much cleaner version

    ?v=fQ0VKcymXgU

  • SHIT!

  • O___O layne staley forever

  • Great cover. Does Layne some justice!

  • nice fucking cover.

  • where is this from?

  • u must feel so lonely sometimes...i never had the purpose to hurt u,i dont care how u feel,if u live or die.and i love sarcasm, its fun..but u suck at it,so get a life instead of amusing me with ur lame attempts of beeing funny,ur just too fucking stupid to do it right.i made my point,so from, now on ur officially ignored worm,ur opinion doesnt matter to me or to anyone else,so say what u wish hoping someone will ever listen.have a nice virtual life, becuz im pretty sure thats all u have left

  • well maybe it took me a month becuz i actally have a social life and i dont waste my time arguing with shitheads like u on youtube.dont worry,i wont waste my time with u..just one thing..i understand ur frustrated and u need to place pointless comments to feel better about urself, but leave layne and ryan adams out of this, its not there fault ur a useless dickhead

  • oh wow. still trying to make a point. let me tell you, those insults just tear my heart to pieces. if you'd quit *trying* to talk shit on me, then i wouldn't have to come back and keep dogging you out. but it just seems like you're the one that won't give up. so you keep sitting there behind your keyboard trying to conjure up shit to talk on me, and i'll just keep making fun of you.

  • ppl are different, with different emotions therefore they relate to songs like this in different ways and find different meanings.thats originality, when a song has a meaning to u and u reveal YOUR emotions covering it,not the artists emotions..now that would make u unoriginal..the problem is i see no emotions here, this guy has no idea what he's singing about,so dont talk to me about good/bad covers or true aic fans..u dont know how much aic music helped me in my rough times

  • cerpinvismund, why oh why do u defend ryan adams with such bravery and devotation...i wonder...maybe ur the one whos dreaming of sucking his dick.good luck with that

however i never said this guy is talentless or unoriginal just becuz his cover doesnt sound like the original.thats bullshit...

  • well, im glad it took you a month to respond to my insult to you. i read the first line of your comment, and that's all i needed to read. get off of it dickface. the argument's over. i really don't care what you did or didn't say. you're a fucking nobody. so leave it at that. don't try to come back with some smartass remark either. because it's truly fucking over. just like your social life.

  • people need to think of this cover in a different context.

in my opinion, Ryan Adams is a very good songwriter and

a gift to the world of music, especially considering the

depressive state music has been in this decade.

this cover bridges two genres and should help people respect both styles. think about the feeling you get from the music more than anything else.

  • Very few people can replicate Laynes Haunting vocal range

  • What the fuck...they totally destroyed the original. It´s not a country song, dammit!!!

Layne would have puke all over that gay singer´s suit :-)

  • Great performance, but they can't beat the original thing. Ryan's voice is just to whiny, he's got that Elton John thing going.

  • why would he cover it then :S

  • Fuckkkkkkkkkkkk you.

    K bye.

  • Ryan looks like a super drunk Roy Orbison in this clip...great job.

  • i think he was kinda too wasted to tell who it was...just listen to what he he says in the beginning and how slurred it was...

  • Agreed KingLeon. Chains fans should be happy that his music lives on and others cover it. It opens his music to others who may not otherwise have heard it (who knows, maybe all of Ryan Adam's fan mite check out the Chains! - even though I agree that he should have acknowledged whose song it was). Of that u should be happy - you are not grasping onto some hidden secret are you, 'Chainers'? Spread the word and this GOOD cover helps do that

  • You're right I am happy that people cover this song just not this asshole.

  • John Graboff is soooo good in this song!!! So is Ryan and the other Cardinals, but Graboff, wow!

  • To the people who say he ruined the song are stupid b/c if he really did then you still wouldn't be able to put on the mtv unplugged album by alice and ejoy it b/c I know everytime you put it on you still enjoy it

  • gd cover, prefer the origional but none the less i apreciate this cover. not in bad taset attall/,

  • Brilliant!!

    Excellent cover

  • this is an amzing show of respect to a fallen hero we miss you layne

  • you people saying this is a horrible cover. Shut up. Just shut up, nobody wants to hear it, Hes showing his respect for AIC. So it doesn't sound the same, whoop dee doo. A cover is when a band takes another's song and plays it with their style. It's a good cover. So shut up.

  • As a fan of Layne, Jerry, Sean, Mike I. & Mike S., I think Ryan did an excellent cover of this song!

Thanks for posting it, Slavia 7!!! You Rock!!!

  • to everybody that defended this, good job. ryan adams is an amazing musician. let the people who still prefer Alice In Chains' version of this song do just that. I just think it's funny that they talk down on somebody who has enough audacity to cover Alice In Chains. but I guess anyway who covers anything is unoriginal and turns the covered song into trash.

  • I meant anyone* who covers anything is unoriginal and turns the covered song into trash.

  • this guy totally ruined Alice in Chains' down in a hole. A man whos style is this soft and sweet shouldnt be covering heavy metal artists, great influential artists with vocalists such as Layne Staley. Please type in the original down in a hole by alice in chains and see how it was meant to be played and sung.

  • I heartfully disagree. A cover doesn't have to be a carbon copy of the original. Adams' remaking this song as a country/blues ballad takes the intensity of the old version and replaces it with a mournful sadness that in its own way matches whats on the AIC veresion.

Adams has actually rekindled my love of a song I had been underapreciating for years.

  • man this guy doesnt even come close to layne. but the worst cover of a song i have ever heard is probably Avenge sevenfolds cover of pantera

  • yeahhhhh its Ryan Adams.....

  • Horrible...Staley wipes his ass with guys like Bryan Adams. Straight out, nobody from Canada could ever have the depth that this songs demands..

  • neil young is from canada and i'm pretty sure that he has some depth.

  • Wrong Adams. Bryan Adams did "The Summer of '69" and had a horrible bowl cut. This is Ryan Adams: extremely prolific indie/alt-country songwriter.

In addition to Neil Young, the Band is another example of extremely deep Canadian songwriters.

  • if staley is so great maybe you can have a seance with schiz0fr3nia and layne will come back and hang out with you guys. maybe he'll suck your dicks for a bag or two. obviously you like this cover or you wouldnt make snide remarks about it. you would have just closed your browser 45 seconds into it.

  • Staley was great.. Fuckin' asshole.

  • "now were gonna play something by somebody else..."

    wtf??

at least have the decency to mention who's song ur fucking up

no cover ever matches the original song, but there are good and bad covers.

this is one of the worst

  • I agree...or perhaps he was worried that some might go home and watch Layne/AIC's performance of this song and realize what shit this really is. 4:55-4:59 is hysterical...Complete disrespect.

  • enough of the arguing....ryan adams HAS talent and this performance certainly shows that....i understand that we are all entitled to our own opinions but i do find it very annoying how people can be so critical of everything and if you don't like it then dont watch it and dont leave comments accusing someone so brilliant of being talentless

  • wat the fuk's this. prob the worst cover i've ever heard yet

  • LOL...you're such an idiot...i never made it about whether Staley or Cantrell wrote the song...this is all about the fact that he that you worship,Ryan Adams, makes an ass of himself by attempting, and i use the word loosely,to cover something that is obviously way beyond his capability, thus appearing talentless. If that gets you mad,i suggest you get a life...

  • at least he covered it??? that's the lamest fn comeback i've ever heard.Anyone can cover anything, doesn't mean the result won't be a steaming pile of dog shit like this...

  • what's fn? you mean like fucking? i'm done with you, im glad you dont like this cover. go listen to Dirt and hold a seance when this song comes on, maybe Layne Staley will come back and congradulate you on defending one of his masterpieces. even though i'm pretty sure Jerry Cantrell wrote this song. you're a fucking jobber.

  • listen,i give 2 shits if he massacres an oasis song, and i think he does a piss poor job of covering AIC...no amount of your crying over it is gonna change my opinion...as a long time fan of Alice In Chains, this cover offends me

  • im not crying over anything. im simply stating, at least he covered it. how about you cover it mr. tommy toughnuts? i happen to like alice in chains too. im not saying ryan adams' version is better than the original. no cover is better than an original composition. but don't talk shit on this. if you don't like it, don't fucking listen to it. instead, you can keep listening to your fag red jumpsuit apparatus cd.

  • like layne no other...

  • he doesnt even tune it down half a step this is shit

  • maybe calling the guy talentless was a stretch, but i do find this cover is an insult to the original

  • why is it in insult? because he did something that nobody else does and make it his own version to cover it? what if you listened to his cover of 'wonderwall?' it doesnt sound exactly like the oasis version of it, is that an insult?

  • this cover is awesome. no matter what RA is doing, it's fucking awesome. i would totally get fucked up and hang out with Ryan Adams. i need to see this son of a bitch live.

  • Terrible. Adams' studio version of this song is much better.

  • Yeah, i think the goal of a cover is to pay homage 2 a band/song you appreciate not 2 outdo them since the original is usually always better anyway. I especially love when bands go in another direction with songs instead of simply playing it the same note for note. This is one of the best if not the best cover I've heard of it so far, by far. Very well done & hank you for posting :)

  • You guys think ur amazing "critics".everyones entitled to i say i know..but this man is a living legend..wake up! its people like u guys who 'love' music but are so ignorant.

  • "talentless"??

of course he's no layne, but this is one of the best covers ive seen of this song!

  • This will never compare to the original AiC performances but for a cover I think he did a pretty good job.

  • woahhh i agree that the AIC version is much much better however i think its unfair to call Ryan Adams talentless....

  • Yes, Ryan Adams is a talentless hack. The original will always be better.

  • How dare he,that talentless bastard hack..he should be stoned to death for this

  • he probably was stoned for this. i'd like to see you cover this song. then you can use the word "talentless" all you want.

  • God damn that sucked bad.

  • fuckin outta control

  • no no no for this version!

  • original is better

  • I like it, but it lacks the emotion that AIC did it with.

  • Better than the original..

  • you must be on drugs...

  • its better at that tempo and the steel guitar is un real.. but im a bigger adams fan than AIC

  • fucking amazing..if you don't think so you're into insync

  • fuckin great!

  • Ryan's singing a cover of a Cantrell song...of which most part is also sung by Cantrell...and its not about Heroin he wrote about...he wrote about an old girlfriend...and by the way...not bad!

  • Bury me softly in this wound ? yeah that isn't hard to figure out

  • Its WOMB=

  • oh my bad - sorry

  • the most talented artist of this generation. hands down. he's like lennon or dylan. prolific, relevant, and careless.

  • has sorta a erie(sp) vibe about it. i like it :D

  • enjoyed listening to someone else's version, but nowhere near the unplugged version with layne and jerry - sorry

  • GREAT COVER!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brilliant. Adams gets the emotion just right.

  • Ryan Adams is the greatest singer/songrwriter breathing....

  • great song, average cover.

  • agreed

  • Great song, great cover.

  • Simply, a great song covered by an incredibly talented artist. He knows where Layne was coming from. Also, his vocal performance on the new album, and this concert in particular, are his best yet.

  • Ryan was in the same heroin shit hole that Layne was in. Ryan survived though. Why shouldn't he sing this song?

  • Steady on doods....compare this with some of adams own material and you might get the vibe although while this is great quality its just not getting that vibe across. Check out some of the rougher versions on tube and you might get what i'm bullshittin about,kinda....the guy's fuckin brilliant

  • i cannot believe aic fans are ripping on ryan adams... what a joke.

  • horrible. why was this ever filmed?

  • just be glad alice in chains is getting any respect. what waste a away that band become, they couldnt control themselves and in the lost.

    long live ryan.
