I'm going to agree with many of the other posts; as I have been listening to AIC for 18 years now. I've seen very good covers of down in a whole, but this ain't it. He hit the chorus pretty decently, but the rest of the song took it to the hilt, i.e. sucked cock. He's better off covering a N'Sync song.
Some bands & artists can put such a remarkable personal stamp on a song that it's almost impossible for listeners to not associate the two. Alice In Chains has accomplished that feat with "Down In A Hole," & regardless of the ability/inability of Mr. Adams on this cover, he's fighting an insanely steep uphill battle.
It's impossible for me to hear this track without associating it with Layne Staley & AIC, & I imagine the same is true for many other listeners. Some songs don't need to be covered.

In this stripped down cover...you can finally appreciate it this song for what it's worth. AIC did a nice job live with this song, but on 'Dirt' it's pretty avg. I won't kill the creator, but this BA version is way better.
There is no sense of despair that made AIC's version of this song so haunting. I think Ryan is too good of a singer to make this song - too smooth. Layne Staley was an absurdly emotive singer whose wail could be menacing and vulnerable at the saem time. Ryan Adams can't match the genuine sadness that was required to write these lyrics.

I heartfully disagree. A cover doesn't have to be a carbon copy of the original. Adams' remaking this song as a country/blues ballad takes the intensity of the old version and replaces it with a mournful sadness that in its own way matches whats on the AIC veresion.
Adams has actually rekindled my love of a song I had been underapreciating for years.

Yeah, i think the goal of a cover is to pay homage 2 a band/song you appreciate not 2 outdo them since the original is usually always better anyway. I especially love when bands go in another direction with songs instead of simply playing it the same note for note. This is one of the best if not the best cover I've heard of it so far, by far. Simply, a great song covered by an incredibly talented artist. He knows where Layne was coming from. Also, his vocal performance on the new album, and this concert in particular, are his best yet.
Steady on doods....compare this with some of adams own material and you might get the vibe although while this is great quality its just not getting that vibe across. Check out some of the rougher versions on tube and you might get what i'm bullshittin about,kinda....the guy's fuckin brilliant

ppl are different,with different emotions therefore they relate to songs like this in different ways and find different meanings.thats originality,when a song has a meaning to u and u reveal YOUR emotions covering it,not the artists emotions..now that would make u unoriginal..the problem is i see no emotions here,this guy has no idea what he's singing about,so dont talk to me about good/bad covers or true aic fans..u dont know how much aic music helped me in my rough times

people need to think of this cover in a different context.
in my opinion, Ryan Adams is a very good songwriter and
a gift to the world of music, especially considering the
depressive state music has been in this decade.
this cover bridges two genres and should help people respect both styles. think about the feeling you get from the music more than anything else.

Agreed KingLeon. Chains fans should be happy that his music lives on and others cover it. It opens his music to others who may not otherwise have heard it (who knows, maybe all of Ryan Adam's fan mite check out the Chains! - even though I agree that he should have acknowledged whose song it was). Of that u should be happy - you are not grasping onto some hidden secret are you, 'Chainers'? Spread the word and this GOOD cover helps do that

this guy totally ruined Alice in Chains' down in a hole. A man whos style is this soft and sweet shouldnt be covering heavy metal artists, great influential artists with vocalists such as Layne Staley. Please type in the original down in a hole by alice in chains and see how it was meant to be played and sung.

I heartfully disagree. A cover doesn't have to be a carbon copy of the original. Adams' remaking this song as a country/blues ballad takes the intensity of the old version and replaces it with a mournful sadness that in its own way matches whats on the AIC veresion.
Adams has actually rekindled my love of a song I had been underapreciating for years.

Wrong Adams. Bryan Adams did "The Summer of '69" and had a horrible bowl cut. This is Ryan Adams: extremely prolific indie/alt-country songwriter.
In addition to Neil Young, the Band is another example of extremely deep Canadian songwriters.

Yeah, i think the goal of a cover is to pay homage 2 a band/song you appreciate not 2 outdo them since the original is usually always better anyway. I especially love when bands go in another direction with songs instead of simply playing it the same note for note. This is one of the best if not the best cover I've heard of it so far, by far. Very well done & hank you for posting :)
