@MissKissize Don't roll on your spine. Roll across your back, from shoulder to hip. NOT down the middle of your back, on your spine. I never feel anything that hurts my spine.
If you falter, you're likely to cause yourself injury, because you're allowing your bodyweight to fall on 1 part of you, such as the shoulder.
Doing rolls slowly to practice is likely to cause pain, if you start from a kneeling position, just try to go at least at a quick pace to minimize any pain.
Also, for this roll, it's important to use the curve of your arm, so you're not falling on your shoulder and then rolling.
I'm still beginner in Aikido and I can't successfully doing a roll. Halfway through the roll, I bail and flop over like a sausage, and land horizontally. ><;; Sensei gets a kick out of it sometimes. xD I've done it correctly only once and I hit my shoulder hard.
this is very good vid. usually all the vids that teach how to do physical things have like 30mins of talking and 3 sec glimpse of thing they trying to teach you. 5/5
When I do the first roll practice, from kneeling position, when you come all the way to the ground and roll, everything looks alright, I roll from one shoulder to the other hip. But when I try to add the hands and roll, I go from one shoulder to the same hip. Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong?
I would have to see it to be certain, but my guess is that you are not aligning your body correctly before you roll, or changing something mid roll.
Make sure you are standing in hamni before you start your roll. Envision the line of the roll going from hip to opposite shoulder, roll slowly and pay close attention to what you are doing, see how it differs from what you ideally want to do, and start making adjustments.
It often takes awhile to "get" the feeling of the roll, take your time.
i think this is a good tutorial, but i think you shuld use your leg fingers more, for pushing.I never seen ukemi(i dont think i am spelling these things well:P) in shuari waza like you do it. from VDB,guesmi, and so,you will see u shuld put your hand foward-like at normal, standing ukemi.
Any way to learn this if you are not used to rolling? I havn't been on a trampoline in years, and i never learned the Forward Roll ... So I know how to, but my body never rolls =/ It seem I can't get my legs around ... Any thing I can do?
Thank you so much for this tutorial! This is the only video that taught me how to roll. I havent seen another aikido video that "breaks it down" by getting on the ground and doing it there and then working your way up Thank you soo much!
Thank you so much for this video! I've been trying for a few weeks now and all I've gotten better at is smacking myself into the ground. I didn't realize that you are supposed to keep your arms in a circle (locking my hands the first few times really helped) because they teach it a different way at my club. I can do over my right shoulder now! Thanks a bunch.
Great! That's what I like to hear! Eventually you should be able to take a roll with no hands at all, but that is more advanced. Doing the basic form over and over will make you more comfortable. Eventually you'll be taking ukemi with the best of em'.

we call the sitting roll an ikkyo roll, but do it while diving. also, we use 10 people as an obstacle for the jumping and dive roll.

The thing with rolling is the make it flow.
If you falter, you're likely to cause yourself injury, because you're allowing your bodyweight to fall on 1 part of you, such as the shoulder.

After i did kneeling rolls without going from Seiza i felt shoulder pain.
When i started doing more rolls from seiza i didn't feel scared as much when i did it kneeling.
Thanks for the tips and tutorial!

Rolling from suwari waza as is seen in this video is only done to help those new to rolling become accustomed to the motions.
I only push with my "leg fingers" when I absolutely must... Also I'm not sure what you mean by"VDB, guesmi".

Are you talking about a flip or a roll?
ChuShinTani 2 years ago
just a simple roll. I am sitting on the floor, trying to roll, but I simply can't get my legs to get around me ...
legendaryplayer 2 years ago
If you are doing the roll from sitting position, as shown in the video, you should end up sitting on your butt.
If you want to go to standing from there simply shift your body weight forward and you should be able to stand.
ChuShinTani 2 years ago
hm... i believe there is a "fear" factor in it then. Since try to push myself around, but my legs never gets around.
I guess I should just keep trying.
Thanks though!
