@Porodyn No, not at all. I really damaged my shoulder for 5 months by doing improper rolls repeatedly. One should never continue if you are getting chronic pain due to the rolls. (pain when not rolling). The roll is mostly about technique, but strength always helps.
hmm, wait I noticed that his left foot meets the ground on its side when exiting the roll, is that right? cause wouldn't it sort of interfere or slam against the floor if you were doing a high speed roll? =/
My shoulder hurts to lol but watch out on high falls cuz u must lean in front of u like u jump on the belly and do it cuz if u try it like im guessing u do that will hurt if u do it correctly the pain should be short so that means ur not used to it just keep practicing film urself and compare to others on slow motion and u will see why,,,
@tarziq try to slowly collapse the arm that supports the shoulder where you will start your shoulder roll. don't immediately roll fast, learn to control it. then when you get used to rolling slowly, you can then practice go to a roll while you are walking. then jumping. then voila! youve done it! oh and do it on soft surfaces first, not the really soft ones. carpets are the best.

In response to 12ibar it is normal to transition ur roll from hands to elbow then onto shoulder. If u are having trouble with the roll look up " advanced roll tutorial" on YouTube by urban current.
Don't stop, just perfect your technique so that you roll in a way without pain. There is a difference between pain and discomfort though: You'll always have discomfort rolling on pavement, but shouldn't have pain.
• not roll diagonally/shoulder to opposite hip - best to limit "spine time" & also raises muscles so you fall on soft tissue rather than vertebra
• hit head on forward rolls
• not use arms/their 1st point of contact is shoulder – so don't spread force of the fall - can lead to shoulder problems
• many jump & roll where force vector is aimed down too much rather than out - increases force that comes into their body rather than spreading force of fall
He kinda left out the most important thing. It might come logical to some, but for those it doesn't come naturally/logically to- it might actually hurt them quite a bit..
Your head, remember to tug that chin to your chest (in a gentle manner ofcourse).
It's concrete, it's going to hurt if you start practicing on concrete right away. I suggest grass or gym-mats or something that doesn't fracture your bones if you do it wrong the first time.

In winter i go to a gym every wednesday at the evening to practice parkour but the instructors are just telling everyone, even though they have never done a roll before, to just do it on concrete while jumping from a 1½ m wall, which in my opinion is the wrong way to do it.... My hip-bone still hurts from doing that.........

A 500 foot fall, no matter the circumstances, would be fatal.
Falling from at least 20 feet, however, although you may break a bone or two it could save your life. It is highly important that any RESPONSIBLE Traceur master the roll first and foremost. It's a matter of safety and common sense; Parkour and Freerunning are NOT about big risks, no matter what videos you see.
You should be able to feel it on your shoulder, and on your hip, the issue is when you feel it on your spine.
The idea of the roll is to maximize surface area after your drop, spreading out the impact over a larger area. You should try to keep your spine from impacting the ground, however, as much as possible.
This doesn't mean that you magically won't feel it on your shoulder and back WHATSOEVER, however any pain that

Practice on GRASS until you MASTER the roll without feeling any hard impact on the spine, ribs, or hips. Roll around on concrete to see what you're hitting in your roll that is painfull, then go back on grass and fix it. Everyone has a much different roll because of their different body shapes. The idea in Parkour is to learn how to move your body, not to learn pre-set moves learned on someone else's.

@yoscott1 There are ways to make it not hurt, even when you are bony. Don't hit the top of your shoulder, hit the back of it, and adjust the angle coming out of the roll. That'll eliminate the pain in the shoulder and the hip.
@Sn1p3rSh4wn Why would someone think that O.o, rolls are slightly uncomfortable as you are effectively lying on a hard surface and getting up but if something hurts; that is your body telling you that you are damaging it.
OR you can simply practice your own technique and figure out what roll works for you, because everyone's body is different. Just make sure it doesnt hurt.

@Limabeast I use to get these when I first started. To avoid it, at the beginning of the roll you need to put the load on your scapula not on your shoulders bones as it has a larger surface area so the effect of the impact will be smaller.
i am just starting out, i have done it about 20 times on a wood floor and have a large bruise on my shoulder, does this mean i am doing it incorrectly?

@momoromoy when you land you land on ur feet and also put your hands inbetween your feet. Kinda bend your right arm in a way that you roll from ur right shoulder to your left hip or vice versa. Just when you land u gotta do the roll right away or you might get hurt really bad. This any help?
@monkdudeable yea really. i think it's just cos of the camera angle. purpose of roll is to reduce impact, only parts that come into contact with the ground are your feet, back and palm of hands. if the elbow does touch the ground, elbow=hard, cement=hard, that's gona be a solid impact. not good..

@HingedThomas when your shoulder hurts it means that you hit the ground with it , you should try to roll more over the shoulder instead of hitting it against the ground. It takes some time and practise, you might wanna try to tuck in your shoulder, i had the same problem as you for a long time but i solved it ;) gl on trying

If you are fat or muscled: Do it and practice until you can do it good.
If you are really skinny: Go visit mcdonalds, kfc, pizza hut and subway and eat atleast 5 things from each shop. Then do the roll again.

PAIN MEANS YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. I know a guy who has permanent back damage because he listened to people say it would hurt and to just deal with it. A 500 foot fall, no matter the circumstances, would be fatal.
Falling from at least 20 feet, however, although you may break a bone or two it could save your life. It is highly important that any RESPONSIBLE Traceur master the roll first and foremost. It's a matter of safety and common sense; Parkour and Freerunning are NOT about big risks, no matter what videos you see.

It's not a 100% painless process, either...
You should be able to feel it on your shoulder, and on your hip, the issue is when you feel it on your spine.
The idea of the roll is to maximize surface area after your drop, spreading out the impact over a larger area. You should try to keep your spine from impacting the ground, however, as much as possible.
This doesn't mean that you magically won't feel it on your shoulder and back WHATSOEVER, however any pain that

Practice on GRASS until you MASTER the roll without feeling any hard impact on the spine, ribs, or hips. Roll around on concrete to see what you're hitting in your roll that is painfull, then go back on grass and fix it. Everyone has a much different roll because of their different body shapes. The idea in Parkour is to learn how to move your body, not to learn pre-set moves learned on someone else's.

@yoscott1 There are ways to make it not hurt, even when you are bony. Don't hit the top of your shoulder, hit the back of it, and adjust the angle coming out of the roll. That'll eliminate the pain in the shoulder and the hip.

Try to build up your back muscles. Also, decrease the radius of your roll. I've seen some people who basically do a barrel-roll on the ground.

@Limabeast I use to get these when I first started. To avoid it, at the beginning of the roll you need to put the load on your scapula not on your shoulders bones as it has a larger surface area so the effect of the impact will be smaller.

This is the most usfull tehnick in parkour and i see alot of comments that he tuched whti his spine well if you look you have to tuch but if you do normal gymnastic roll you will hit your back on the ground hard when you roll thats why you have to hit from the side you dont acualy feal that.t

@momoromoy when you land you land on ur feet and also put your hands inbetween your feet. Kinda bend your right arm in a way that you roll from ur right shoulder to your left hip or vice versa. Just when you land u gotta do the roll right away or you might get hurt really bad. This any help?

@monkdudeable yea really. i think it's just cos of the camera angle. purpose of roll is to reduce impact, only parts that come into contact with the ground are your feet, back and palm of hands. if the elbow does touch the ground, elbow=hard, cement=hard, that's gona be a solid impact. not good..

@HingedThomas when your shoulder hurts it means that you hit the ground with it , you should try to roll more over the shoulder instead of hitting it against the ground. It takes some time and practise, you might wanna try to tuck in your shoulder, i had the same problem as you for a long time but i solved it ;) gl on trying
