I think the available light actually worked really well. I'm all for lighting a good scene, but the darkness gave it a sense of reality that helped make it suspenseful. It reminded me of The Omen where they let a lot of scenes go extremely dark which made it more frightening. I hate when night scenes look artificial, after all, people can't really see in the dark.
