i have a border collie blue merle called sky we also have an ordinary collie named ben we were told NEVER under ANY circamstances to breed sky with another border collie blue merle as they go loopy we met one on the park once that was the same as sky only difference its parents were both blue merles it was put to sleep age 5months after he started mauling people the vet said it was the scaryest thing he had ever seen the dogs eyes turned red!!
My wife wanted a dog for years, I did not. One day she said "if we did have a dog what would it be" Without hesitation I said Border Collie. Why, because I only remembered thay all look different. Needless to say we now have 5 year old Jack and 3 month Blaze.
Hi the silver/mottled ones are called blue merles and it is a genetic colour, you get them when you breed a merle to a black & white, never merle to merle. they can also have the copper coloured markings of the tri colour.
@wigginer Really? That's very interesting. I thought you got them breeding a blue merle to another blue merle, and that if you breeded a blue merle to a black and white, you got both. You've just said it's not so, why is that? I'm very curious about that :):)
the little tubby black and white one reminds me of our BC when she was that age, she would run across the room then fall down and go to sleep. Her colours changed and she became a tri colour and is now 11 years old. She is a bit stiff after lying down but hey it doesn't stop her running for her ball/frisbee she is on youtube.
Yes, not yelling at you or anything, but alot of people are pretty ignorant when it comes to the different looks of BC's. One of my Border Collies is a blue/grey merle smooth coat who is a very small BC. He actually comes from very good lineage, thus it really angers me when people tell me he isn't a BC. I wish more varieties would be shown on the net instead of the typical black and white long/medium/rough coats.
sorry for not replying sooner, lots to catch up on with the dogs "off-line". Someone recently asked if our "Jack" was crossed with something else!! he just happens to be one of the top stud dogs in the UK?? the mind boggles, you just grin and bear it, LOL. We have bred so many different colours and types, that is one of the things that makes the breed so interesting.
Listen we are all on a permanent learning curve throughout our lives, I can put you in touch with people within the breed who state quite honestly "in their opinion" ""IF IT ISN'T BLACK AND WHITE IT ISN'T A BORDER COLLIE"" The emphasis is theirs not mine. years ago my daughter got so fed up of people asking what breed her Blue Merle Border Collie was that she finally told them that the dog was A "Russian Speckled Herder" So locally that is what she was, a very rare breed indeed. LOL.
I know how you feel. My border is black and white but is missing the common white collar and blaze and people adamantly tell me she is not a border just because she doesn't have a blaze on her face! I know what my dog is thank-you and that is why i chose her because she is different to the standard classically marked border lol. The ignorance of some people.
Hey, marij, I've had pure border collies and my current friend Nacho is a mix. So what, he's got the border markings and definitely the personality of one.
Some folk would like to bring racism into the doggy world as well. Ignore them and love your dog.
I know that since i posted that comment i got a border that is solid white and god forbid she not be "breed standard" i've learnt to ignore what people say about my dogs. I know they are purebred and they are the smartest, sweetest dogs around. Just because they are not "breed standard" which is wrong anyway doesn't mean they can't be good pets or agility superstars!
