This is a Villers engine, they where primarily used on a Ransomes Super Certes 51 cylinder mower. I work at a main Ransomes Distributorship, if you still need any parts for the engine, please message me. you can still obtain parts for this engine.
I've got a 20" 1962 Ransomes Marquis which would have originally had one of these engines, however the guy I'd bought it off had fitted a Honda G100 to it, the Marquis is a semi-professional version of the Auto Certes but had a simpler height of cut adjustment and only a 6 blade cylinder.
those engines are sometimes used on ransomes cylinder lawnmowers. thats the centrifugle cluch on the other side. i have got one of those mowers but it has an old brigges engines on it. dosent run tho.
I have spent many years working on these type of engines. They were built by BSA and used exclusively on the Ransomes Auto Certes Cylinder Mower. The BSA engine is a Sloper F12
@jaketownsend36 this is kind of neat actually, i never imagined as many responces to this as i have gotten. my grandpa was born in england so its kind of neat learning more about england. thanks for the info!
@jamshad187 yes it sure is. i only recently found out what it was used on but i found out who made the engine awhile back. i still have to fix the carberator on it. it does run but the float doesnt work right and it floods the carb fast.
yes it is. i did a little more digging using the tidbits of information people have given me in the comments below and i found its made by Villiers and some were sold as BSA engines. i also found the mower it came off of originally was most likely a ransomes marquis 20" mower.
i was told its either a villiers or a BSA. i dont know much about it other than a freind took it off a mower, i wish he had kept the mower. i know the whole mower was shipped in from england and sold through a local mower and tractor dealer.
it hasnt thrown any oil out on me. thanks for the info. my carberator float doesnt work right but it runs. you have to open the gas valve fill up the carb and start the engine. than you have to repeatedly open and close the valve. if you dont the carb floods.
Your engine is a villiers A12 It is 120cc with a SIBA starter. There are lots of them on ebay on Ransomes mowers. There was another version badged BSA, [a bsa A15] which is the same but 150cc. They have either a villiers or an AMAL carb depending on type, and a new silencer [muffler] will be easy to find on ebay. I would not run it without the flywheel, but take the brake shoe things off first as they will fly off and could well kill you as there is no clutch drum to keep them in!!
this engine is a villiers engine and came off a ransomes marques cylinder mower i have one of these myself these were considered top quality and if you remove the centrifugal clutch you will find that the shaft is tapered
u dont need a muffler to run it for a short period of time just screw a pice of pipe in there at least 4inches long and you will be fine samd set up they use for raceing
their is no threads to thread a pipe on, and the muffler is junk all i want from the muffler is the mounting plate so that i can just weld a pipe to it. currently it shoots flames out of the exhaust and im afraid they will light the carb on fire!
No probs, still got one of the machines if you are interested, although shipping may be too expensive. Had to get rid of all my machinery due to illness. Some still left - Marquis, Howard gem, Allen scythe, BMB plowmate and British Anzani Iron horse.
In response to your video, the engine is a BSA engine. They were used in Ransoms cylinder lawn mowers, probably a Marquis. The engines were very reliable, some lasting over 50 years.
wow thatnks for the info! i think that abele power equipment co. here in usa was buying reel mowers as we call them here so cylinder lawn mowers as you call them , and rebaging them as their own! cool! i wish i had the mower it came off but my freind scrapped it!
This is a BSA Slanted Cylinder engine made by Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) and was a british company. It would be made about 1950 as i have an engine exactly the same. i am from england.
well thank you very much! i was hopeing someone could help me! i was looking at the suffolk engines as they appear to have the sameshape fuel tank and a similar rope starter. do you know any information on the mower or what these powered? i belive abele mower company was importing english made power reel mowers into the united states. unfortunatly i never got to see the mower i wish he had not thrown it out. i would have fixed it up! thanks again!
you wouldent also know the model would you? im having trouble trying to start it. ive had the carb all apart and cleaned it. i'm going to recheck for spark, i had it sort of running but you had to prime the cylender with fuel and it would only fire and die again. i tryed putting fresh fuel in it. it seems to be a very well desgined engine its very clean. i hope i can fix it we dont have many english made engines over here that ive seen. a few listers here and there, thats about it.
get a pencil and put some pencil lead on the end of the plug, it is a littl trick that mite work!!!!have you got an MSN chat adress so we can talk about engines and that better than on here????
