One of the big problems of cost is the hospitals, they're basically a local monopoly because they are so sparse. This means that insurance companies have to yield to whatever price the hospitals set as there isn't really another option and the hospitals can turn an insurance company away if they start questioning the price. Under single-payer hospitals wouldn't be able to do that because almost all their customer would come from a single source. Capitalism for the sake of capitalism is stupid

Medicare and Vetrans Health Insurance has .9% admin costs for every dollar compared to 20-30% admin costs and multible reasons for being denied coverage by the private MMO's. WTF is so hard to understand people? Why are Americans so F stupid about these facts? The current Health Bill was watered down by the Repubs but STILL it protects anybody with insurance from getting denied coverage or future coverage due to a "Pre-Existing Condition". My friend's relative last year who now has cancer got their policy cancel by Cigna (Private Insurance company) because he did not specify that he had surgery in the past for a foot injury. It's tragic that insurance premiums cost more than my rent and car payment combined. I don't even have enough money to buy anything. It's easy to get into debt under these conditions. If Medicare needs a bailout once and a while, I wouldnt be opposed to an injection of funds when needed. It provides everyone with coverage and gives something tangible back to the tax payer. If the country can fund billions for a bullshit war in Iraq and bail out Wall Street, it can cover an injection into Medicare.

I'm in love with this 2-part video. It feels so good to watch two polarized political viewpoints collide and the result not be inane shouting and dismissal of the other side. Weiner was magnificent, and the light finally comes on for Joe when he says, "you (Weiner) so clearly came here and stated your position." This was a victory for political argument. These men will continue to disagree but they now both have a complete understanding of each other's side.

everyone talks about preventative care, but they don't acknowledge that the best way is to cover basic needs at very low cost which curbs a lot of the problems not only with cost when someone gets deathly ill because they let it go for so long, but also general happiness and productivity. single-payer is the best option, private insurance can serve the purpose if they are used to cover serious cases and research but they have to cover preexisting conditions.

private insurance is just immoral. it's profit off the pain and suffering of it's customers. it's just basically wrong, which is why most industrialized countries have moved away from this system. private insurance can have a place if it's regulated and provides supplemental, non-essential care at lower costs than now. if your basic health care needs are covered by a government system it prevents serious illness, and when you do get very sick, private insurance covers it. look at france.

As a Spaniard who benefits from a -relatively- good social security system, I think I can give an answer to that question.

A private insurance company can provide(read: compete with) shorter waiting lists, better hospital rooms and newer medical equipment. Commodities over a robust public system that ensures anyone can access to the best treatment without fear of dragging his family into poverty.

One extra point on the Medicare - people over 65 is the most expensive group to cover. They consume much more healthcare than the younger population.

Adding the other groups will not be like stacking the costs. People older than 65 normally consumes 40-45% of the total healthcare costs.

This means, 4% of GDP today - 10% with all covered. This is approx 5 000$ per capita. Today you pay 7 000$ for health care!

But then must the rising costs for Medicare be solved - but that is next problem.

the cost of overall medical care will decrease if the seniors when they move to medicare have had better care to begin with. If everyone has coverage from birth surely the health of everyone will improve. A mom can take her kid in for a routine check up at no cost and the doc. can catch a problem before it endangers the kid's health. No deductibles to worry about. Healthier kids are no doubt healthier adults.

We created the public school system because we felt education shouldn't be only for those who could afford it. Education should be the right of every child. Shouldn't basic health also be a right?
