Tamyra lost season 1 because her voters thought she was a sure finalist so many stopped voting. Kelly Clarkson probably would have won anyway because she was more popular but in my opinion Tamyra's vocals and stage presence were the best of any female contestant ever on american idol.

This version is MUCH better than Jacob's IMO. Tamyra Just has so much more emotion and range in her singing it's unremarkable. Simon also said that THIS was the best TV performance he had ever seen. That's pretty hard to beat.

I think she is the most over-rated singer from the whole series. She can sing, but is way too generic, her voice is just plain. Kelly's voice is so raw and you can recognise her in a second. Plus, Kelly was a doll and Tamyra was just this. Boring.

@yagfob1 you obvioulsy have no music knowledge. For your info, luther didnt sing this song first. Dionne Warwick sang it before ANYBODY else. Look her up and thats how it SHOULD sound. Tamyra did a great job and she wasnt singing luthers version obviously, she was singing the original verson which is by dionne warwick.
She tried too hard with this song. It doesn't need all of the deep raspy stuff. It doesn't need to be jazzed up. If she'd sung it the way it was originally intended she would have hit a home run.

Fantastic song, fantastic voice, not the best interpretation. She tried to make it a huge number with melisma and that typical, and wonderful, black voice - but the song doesn't merit it. It's much more difficult to sing softly and give emotional drive to the song, but I think it's unfortunate as she's got a great voice.

@Mondibaby I agree that her timing and phrasing are quite awful. But more than that, I'm chagrined that nobody else can hear she's clearly flat through most of the song. She has potential, but she hasn't got control of her voice yet. Needs work.

yagfob1 she got to practice this song for a couple days only got to sing a few minutes of it and can't compare to someone who has sung the song for years and gets to rift on for 10 minutes like Luther. She was and is wonderful. Very passionate and should have won the first season.

@yagfob1 you obvioulsy have no music knowledge. For your info, luther didnt sing this song first. Dionne Warwick sang it before ANYBODY else. Look her up and thats how it SHOULD sound. Tamyra did a great job and she wasnt singing luthers version obviously, she was singing the original verson which is by dionne warwick.

She tried too hard with this song. It doesn't need all of the deep raspy stuff. It doesn't need to be jazzed up. If she'd sung it the way it was originally intended she would have hit a home run.

Fantastic song, fantastic voice, not the best interpretation. She tried to make it a huge number with melisma and that typical, and wonderful, black voice - but the song doesn't merit it. It's much more difficult to sing softly and give emotional drive to the song, but I think it's unfortunate as she's got a great voice.
