@culpritk obviously you dont know anything or are ignorant to the fact of what that sustainer pickup can do.. it responds to movement (the magnets keep it moving but any other form of movement if in the right mode will cause it to do a harmonic by blowing on it.
@theanonymousfuck dude i have 5 guitars all with sustainers,ya by blowing air u can get a weak harmonic or u can switch 2 harmonic or mix mode, but with the whammy and tremelo bar u can manipulate the harmonic causing the sound 2 b more clear. if u have a whammy pedal ul know what im talking about. ok u anonymous fuck!
Would a sustainer be effective in the middle position rather than the neck. Ive been wondering that since im trying to design my custom axe but I wanna have two humbuckers and have the sustainer in the middle.
@NZLeduc nope, when the sustainer is on you play through the bridge pickup, and the sustainer has to be as far away as possible from it, that is in the neck position
I wanna ask something about the sustainer...is it necessarlly to be the whole kit (you know, the humbucker and humbucker, or the single coil and humbucker) or just the neck pickup?
Cause I´ve read about the FSK401 and the 101.
Let´s say, I want this tone on my bridge, but the sustainer on the neck, that would work?
He changed his tongue after licking them LOL.. He has other vids where the sustainer is used within the context of a song. This vid is just a gimmicky thingy
It has to be the 101. Thats the one that comes with the humbucker. I think somewehre in the comments he said that it had an intensity control on the back. The 401 has an intensity control knob on the face of the guitar with a single coil pickup.
That's hilarious. Check out some of his other videos. Both Steve and Jozef can use the Sustainer within the context of a song. The sustainer can be used subtly to enhance your music. In this video it is only being used for illusion and show. Right?
sustain is one of biggest problems while playing live for a guitarist. It's difficult getting the high gain sound without it screeching or feeding back. With the kit u can control the sustain and still get the high gain sound without it screeching or feeding back. check out more of the fernandes sustain kits on youtube.
Most of the sounds that are made when the pitch goes up are from a whammy pedal, which raises (or lowers) the pitch by up to an octave. Same thing when he uses his tongue. The sustainer holds the note, and the whammy pedal does the rest.
I know, the harmonic octave thing with the switch closest to the bridge. But the other sounds with the tongue, and when he lifts the guitar high in the air are done with a whammy pedal.
no. there's no whammy pedal being used. he just bends the string a lot and puts it in harmonic mode. when steve when the highest he raised the whammy bar and had the sustainer in harmonic mode so it went to the harmonic of a raised high note...which is very very high lol.
oh...sorry. that might be what he's doing here but that's not what steve does. i know for sure because in THAT vid he uses the whammy bar. this guy maybe just did it the easy way.
It's alright. Steve does it on occasion as well. I know since I stood front row at the Fillmore in San Francisco and watched him do the trick. He sustains notes on the G and B strings and puts his tongue on the A string to make it look like he's making those high "moving" squeals. It looks cool, but when you watch it up close, it's more amusing than anything else.
there is a few vids of Vai doin this wat u stay but then he started to use a digitech whammy at the same time. There was a pretty gd i seen (cant find it now) that someone had recorded themselves and it zooms in on his foot, clearly using the pedal.
Gd luck finding the vid, he's wearin lepod skin pants and its like a Zappa triubte gig he did
The neck pickup has to be changed to the Fernandes Sustainer (humbucker) pickup. There may be some custom modifications that you can have done to it, but I dont mind its tone and capabilities at all. When the Sustainer is "off" the front pickup acts normally. You can check out its tone on some of my other vids. One guy asks me to stop fiddling with the switches all the time... that is part of the sacrifice I suppose.
Im thinking of getting the 101 sustainer kit for my BC rich mockingbird. Ive been reading about it from some other ppl and they say the the driver pickup is active? is that true and when u use the sustainer, will it cancel out the bridge pickup?
when u activate the sustainer it automatically selects the bridge pickups, and the driver in the neck position vibrates the strings and makes it sustain. at least on the Sustainiac version that it, not sure about the Fernandes one but it should work in almost the same way.
ive got a question its actually a lil bit stupid but can it sound like a humbucker or its simply do tht... and during songs thtwe dont want to ahave this strange but cool noise.. can we turn it off...
The sustainer sounds much better when used in the context of a song. It s great for tricks and all, but take for example 'whispering a prayer" its use is much more musical, i see that jozef has used it isn songs many times no problema
one turns the sustainer on and off, when its on only the bridge pickup is the one that picks up. The other switch it for it to sustain either normally, in a harmonic, or a mix.
It depends on money weather I will be able to keep my Jem or have to sell it when I get to the USA for start up cash to get a car and what not, but If I don't have to I will be getting a sustainer from ebay and putting it in mine! I just hope I don't have to sell it. It would be like selling my dick for me. This guitar is more then a guitar to me. There's something about Jem's I have played on many guitars over my 28 year guitar life, but this thing is like voodoo or something man!
I have one for sale, check my page,I made myn out of basswood, like FLO,Flo is a 88 77 Floral pattern,(basswood) Hence the name Flo,I cant rout into any of my Jems, and when I found out what Flo really was it was an easy decission to go with a 1570 with basswood instead of Alder all the 7v's are made of.Check it out..
Vai has a sustainer in his "FLO" Jem. The guitar with the bent frets is his new true temperment jem that has ridiculous sustain without the sustainer (because of the way the frets are bent, or something like that) But Steve has recently fitted all of his guitars with the new necks, so they all have ridiculous sustain =D
dude have u checked out Vai's frets on his guitar? He has a guitar that has killer sustain and there is no "Sustainer" he sais its becuase of the way the frets are bent
With the Fsk 101 does it have the mix mode as the Fsk 401 because im not sure whether to get the humbucker version or do what Vai did and put the single coil version in his Jem and put a single coil pickup cover next to it for aesthetics
Guys its a digitech whammy pedal..you think you can raise a guitar and the pitch will go up?..same with the tongue..its just a flash move..blowing on it does nothing as well unless you change the pitch with your foot on the pedal at the same time.
you're an idiot. you know absolutely nothing about sustain in loud volume aspects or for that matter, why even a sustainer pickup works in the first place. he blew on it to make the 3rd harmonic you heared raise to a 5th harmonic, only works with frequency controlled sustaining pickups. is the same as turning away or towards a loud fucking guitar amplifier on a harmonic or bending the string for higher pitch sustain. all deals with how the string reacts to magnetic pull from the air around it.
Dude, you have almost 11,000 views on this in less than 7 months. Do you think the man himself has watched this? Verrry Cool stuff! Have you checked your Insight?
You have to route out two sections: One for the 9V battery and another for the electronic unit. Jozef removed the neck EVO completely and put it in his black Ibanez RG. The Fernandes black pickup is in the neck position. It is called a "dummy" pickup. With an expensive guitar like the JEM my advice would be to hire a Certified Luthier to do all the work (preferably one who is familiar with the Fernandes electronics)
I am pretty sure that is a 101 model,oh well. now im more confused I never noticed that Vai uses his whammy bar, but he does!! They are both cool. I think on the Astoria video he uses his whammy pedal more. He even demos how the other two guitarists hold him so he can use two pedals at once. That might not be with the sustainer part though. Very cool stuff. I want one. Iwonder if its is lotsa work to install i prpbly need a luthier
actually, what you are seeing on Jozefs guitar is the FSK 101. Steve Vai had Dimarzio make a nice "fake" cover for him. It comes BLACK baby! The two switches on Jozefs guitar are 1) ON/OFF 2) Harmonic overtone--the back of the unit has 3 adjustment knobs (very small) Jozef is using alternate effects to create illusions. He does it quite well.
It's not the FSK-101 in the video, and Fernandes give the dummy cover with it dimarzio had nothing to do about that. they can come in white, black and red but i've only found black kit alone but Fernandes do it in other color they release a superstrat last year with the 3 color. Here Jozef switch from the normal note sustain mode to harmonic mode and use a Whammy pedal to go up when steve do the tongue trick he pull the floyd back anyway it's like magic better to know nothing about the tricks ;)
what is the best way to have this installed? I have an Ibanez S 620EXQM. I just switched out the stock PUPS for a PAF JOE neck and an EVO2 bridge. Should I just save up to buy a fernandes guitar? I was looking at the Revolver Pro. But I really want one just like this guys own. I always wanted a JEM!
i have a jem with a fernandes installed and its nice n all but u can save alot of money n time by gettin a sustaniac because fernandes sustainer fsk 401 is actualy outdated old technology n u have to rout alot of wood out. i personaly like the single coil n i kept my evo 2 bridge n it work just great
So it's best to get a sustainiac? I was thinking about putting this in my crate guitar. the started pack one. I striped it so it's just wood now. I'm getting it painted. It's going to be my project guitar. But I would love this in my Ibanez. I'm looking at the Stealth Pro right now. Should I just buy a revolver though? I think it would be cheaper and less hassle.
I also have a Ibanez S620EXQM and i was wondering how to install one, the wood on the sides is thin so i dont know where i could put the knobs. I think i could only install the battery box...
That isn't an FSK-401, it's an FSK-101. The FSK-401 has a single coil driver, and it has to be in the neck position. That's a humbucker sustainer, and it has the fernandes markings on it. Vai was the only one with the dummer cover. This model was called the FLO if I'm not mistaken. They didn't sell them in mass. They couldn't, there are sponsorship violations on this guitar, lol.... that's what the dummy cover was for.
It's not an FSK-101, FSK-401 ARE the FSK-101 in kit with the Gotoh/Fernandes VH-401 pickup... And no Steve Vai wasn't alone to have the dummy cover, Van Halen had it, hide who was one of the first back in time etc etc.
You sure man? the FSK-401 has a single coil driver that's seperate from the actual pickup. It's not wired the same way, and it doesn't look the same. The 101 is a neck pickup and driver built into one piece as far as I understand.
However, i don't have direct experience with anything but the 101. No one seems to want the 401 anymore... or even the 101. Seems like everyone likes the sustainiac now.
FSK-401 are the name of the sustainer kit, inside the box you have the sustainer FS-101 it's a single coil looking like a kind of hot rail with the dummy cover , and a humbucker pickup for bridge position made by Gotoh/Fernandes called the VH-401 that' why they call this kit the FSK-401. The one jozef use i don't remember the name but it's the kit you can easily find in Europe it's a humbucker pickup for neck position.
If you want the same model as Steve Vai this is the FSK-101 (also known as the FSK-401 kit because there is a VH-401 pick up) the one they put on the Revolver model are the one you can see in the video, it is an humbucker one the FSK-101 are a single coil with a dummy pickup in order to put it in humbucker place. The sustainer have 3 mode, that's why there is 2 switch one on/off and one to chose the mode, normal note, note+harmonic and harmonic mode you can set up the harmonic you want to ear.
what a dumbass ...the tounge?...really..are you kiding...lol..dude you look like an idiot!!

What, exactly, causes the notes to switch to its pinched harmonic?
is it, simply, the slight additional touch on the same note that is sustaining...is that how Vai and yourself were able to do it?

Gd luck finding the vid, he's wearin lepod skin pants and its like a Zappa triubte gig he did

oh cool, i'll keep an eye out for it. i just knew that in the vids i had seen, he hadn't been using the pedal. thanks.

And how he goes an octave up with a glissando (tipppycal effect from whammy pedal, and not from sustainer)?

part pedal and the sustainer can melt the note into a harmonic

Does anybody know?
Can you use the Evolution HB bridge pick up with the Fernandez single coil sustainer system?
Or do you have to use the HB pickup that comes with it in the bridge?
brib333 2 years ago
cool tricks dude. lets see if I can figure out how to do them
back2thefutre 2 years ago
You need to get used to the taste of guitar strings...mmmmmmmmmmmm...yummy!
18strutter 2 years ago 3
The neck pickup has to be changed to the Fernandes Sustainer (humbucker) pickup. There may be some custom modifications that you can have done to it, but I dont mind its tone and capabilities at all. When the Sustainer is "off" the front pickup acts normally. You can check out its tone on some of my other vids. One guy asks me to stop fiddling with the switches all the time... that is part of the sacrifice I suppose.

Im thinking of getting the 101 sustainer kit for my BC rich mockingbird. Ive been reading about it from some other ppl and they say the the driver pickup is active? is that true and when u use the sustainer, will it cancel out the bridge pickup?
canadaboy23 2 years ago
when u activate the sustainer it automatically selects the bridge pickups, and the driver in the neck position vibrates the strings and makes it sustain. at least on the Sustainiac version that it, not sure about the Fernandes one but it should work in almost the same way.

Hello, I wanted to see if we need to change at least one pickup by force or you can keep the originals .. you can help me?

The sustainer sounds much better when used in the context of a song. It s great for tricks and all, but take for example 'whispering a prayer" its use is much more musical, i see that jozef has used it isn songs many times no problema

what are the switches for? What do they do?
cantplayatall 2 years ago
one turns the sustainer on and off, when its on only the bridge pickup is the one that picks up.

I have one for sale, check my page,I made myn out of basswood, like FLO,Flo is a 88 77 Floral pattern,(basswood) Hence the name Flo,I cant rout into any of my Jems, and when I found out what Flo really was it was an easy decission to go with a 1570 with basswood instead of Alder all the 7v's are made of.Check it out..
petiethepitt 2 years ago
Vai has a sustainer in his "FLO" Jem. The guitar with the bent frets is his new true temperment jem that has ridiculous sustain without the sustainer (because of the way the frets are bent, or something like that) But Steve has recently fitted all of his guitars with the new necks, so they all have ridiculous sustain =D

18strutter 3 years ago
what are the disadvantages of a "sustainiac" or "sustainer"?
popolalasusububu 3 years ago
With the Fsk 101 does it have the mix mode as the Fsk 401 because im not sure whether to get the humbucker version or do what Vai did and put the single coil version in his Jem and put a single coil pickup cover next to it for aesthetics
ChemicalMarriage 3 years ago
Guys its a digitech whammy pedal..you think you can raise a guitar and the pitch will go up?..same with the tongue..its just a flash move..blowing on it does nothing as well unless you change the pitch with your foot on the pedal at the same time.
sinistar426 3 years ago
you're an idiot. you know absolutely nothing about sustain in loud volume aspects or for that matter, why even a sustainer pickup works in the first place. he blew on it to make the 3rd harmonic you heared raise to a 5th harmonic, only works with frequency controlled sustaining pickups. is the same as turning away or towards a loud fucking guitar amplifier on a harmonic or bending the string for higher pitch sustain. all deals with how the string reacts to magnetic pull from the air around it.
evhgl87 3 years ago
lol, blowing is just for style... as he blows, and pulls the sustainer's switch down in "harmonic mode"... blowing does not do anything.
kwikkash2 3 years ago
Your wrong. Blowing makes more string vibrations. That is what the sustainer does. It vibarates the strings magneticly.
Blowing creates diferrent air FLO around the strings. A 9volt battery operates this.

18strutter 3 years ago
its not a "Fernandes pickup"
its a hambucker pickup that comes with the kit
H3venAndH3ll 3 years ago
how did you install the sustainer? is the fernandes pickup in the neck position and the two evos in the middle and bridge?
alepaan 3 years ago
I am pretty sure that is a 101 model,oh well. now im more confused I never noticed that Vai uses his whammy bar, but he does!! They are both cool. I think on the Astoria video he uses his whammy pedal more. He even demos how the other two guitarists hold him so he can use two pedals at once. That might not be with the sustainer part though. Very cool stuff. I want one. Iwonder if its is lotsa work to install i prpbly need a luthier
Illuzion40 3 years ago
actually, what you are seeing on Jozefs guitar is the FSK 101.
18strutter 3 years ago

I always wanted a JEM!
rjetpereira 3 years ago
i have a jem with a fernandes installed and its nice n all but u can save alot of money n time by gettin a sustaniac because fernandes sustainer fsk 401 is actualy outdated old technology n u have to rout alot of wood out. i personaly like the single coil n i kept my evo 2 bridge n it work just great
MasonTheG 3 years ago
So it's best to get a sustainiac? I was thinking about putting this in my crate guitar. the started pack one. I striped it so it's just wood now. I'm getting it painted. It's going to be my project guitar. But I would love this in my Ibanez. I'm looking at the Stealth Pro right now. Should I just buy a revolver though? I think it would be cheaper and less hassle.
rjetpereira 3 years ago
I also have a Ibanez S620EXQM and i was wondering how to install one, the wood on the sides is thin so i dont know where i could put the knobs. I think i could only install the battery box...
JoelLXVI 3 years ago
That isn't an FSK-401, it's an FSK-101. The FSK-401 has a single coil driver, and it has to be in the neck position. That's a humbucker sustainer, and it has the fernandes markings on it. Vai was the only one with the dummer cover. This model was called the FLO if I'm not mistaken. They didn't sell them in mass. They couldn't, there are sponsorship violations on this guitar, lol.... that's what the dummy cover was for.
Saladin126 3 years ago
It's not an FSK-101, FSK-401 ARE the FSK-101 in kit with the Gotoh/Fernandes VH-401 pickup... And no Steve Vai wasn't alone to have the dummy cover, Van Halen had it, hide who was one of the first back in time etc etc.
Fleg 3 years ago
You sure man? the FSK-401 has a single coil driver that's seperate from the actual pickup. It's not wired the same way, and it doesn't look the same. The 101 is a neck pickup and driver built into one piece as far as I understand.
However, i don't have direct experience with anything but the 101. No one seems to want the 401 anymore... or even the 101. Seems like everyone likes the sustainiac now.
Saladin126 3 years ago
FSK-401 are the name of the sustainer kit, inside the box you have the sustainer FS-101 it's a single coil looking like a kind of hot rail with the dummy cover , and a humbucker pickup for bridge position made by Gotoh/Fernandes called the VH-401 that' why they call this kit the FSK-401. The one jozef use i don't remember the name but it's the kit you can easily find in Europe it's a humbucker pickup for neck position.
Fleg 3 years ago
those switchs are part of the sustainer kit? i noticed that vai did it moving the switch, but i thought those was midi efects..
seppesai 3 years ago
dose that sustainer work that good...or is the original that vai has in his guitar better
goebbles1215 3 years ago
Ive been emailing him like an SOB. He aint gonna tell. I know the Fernandes only sustains it doesnt do all that other shiat.
18strutter 3 years ago
If you want the same model as Steve Vai this is the FSK-101 (also known as the FSK-401 kit because there is a VH-401 pick up) the one they put on the Revolver model are the one you can see in the video, it is an humbucker one the FSK-101 are a single coil with a dummy pickup in order to put it in humbucker place. The sustainer have 3 mode, that's why there is 2 switch one on/off and one to chose the mode, normal note, note+harmonic and harmonic mode you can set up the harmonic you want to ear.
Fleg 3 years ago
Hey buddy, very, very sweet.....I really think this is over the top.....how do you do it? LOL
