Oh, i totally forgot to mention, IPS screen is awesome! I can literally fold the screen close with an inch between screen and keyboard, I can still see the picture without losing a shade of color. Excellent viewing angle. It seems they had 4 cell previously on X200, but not for X220.
I received my X220 and it is a mean little machine. Although I can't really figure out why it has to be so thick. There is no DVD drive, and it uses lower profile hard drive, yet, it is still thicker than I thought it would be. And with the 6 cell sticking out from the bottom (not like 9 cell which sticks out from the back), it makes it look even thicker. Did you ever see 4 cell in person? I believe there is also 4 cell option, I am getting EXCELLENT battery life from my 6 cell. No more brick!
Yes, I noticed that too, they have two tiny speakers right at the bottom facing the user. I tested it at the store which was pretty busy, but I had to put my ear on the T420 as well as X220 to hear anything at all, but T420 had obviously better sound because it has two dolby speakers on both sides of the keyboard. I think X220 is just T420 without the speakers on either side. The keyboard was identical.
I think I kept you busy enough with my questions... I will review your other videos. 'night..
I found a X220 paired with the Ultrabase 3 Series. I was planning to get a regular base, but a DVD drive is a huge plus. So I am considering getting X220 with Ultrabase + DVD.
I am concerned about the weight of the base, Is it too light? With other bases, there is a big button on top where you can just press and undock, but with ultrabase, you actually have to eject, wait, then undock, and it is a pull mechanism. Will it be OK on a daily basis? Will it move all over the place?
@HeadingForTomorrow I used the Ultrabase with the X201T for a long time. I thin it will be fine. The Ultrabase was not made to be carried around, it's more of a docking station that sits in one spot for a long time.
@JesseBAndersen Of course, I couldn't type more due to char limit. What I meant was if it would move around on the desk because it looks so thin & light. When you lift it the thinkpad after ejecting, it won't lift up the base with it right? Would you recommend securing the base to the desk somehow, is that even an option? It would be great if we could bolt it down. :) I will have to dock/undock 2-3 times a day. I wouldn't think of carrying it unless I really needed optical drive elsewhere/home
@HeadingForTomorrow I don't know about bolting it down. I presume you could be creative and superglue it. It's been a while since I had the X201T and the Ultrabase. I remember that it was light, but I don't think I had too many issues with it.
@JesseBAndersen Thank you. I am considering X220 and it seems to be a nice little laptop. Did you have problems typing on it for a long time? I dont know if you used it for a long while but I understand palm rests are kind of short and not much room to rest hands. Did you have this problem?
@HeadingForTomorrow The ThinkPads have the greatest laptop keyboards. I never had problems with the palm rest being too short. It really depends on how you type (some people don't rest palms at all). I do miss typing on it because I have been using a SIIG multimedia mini keyboard and that has about an inch of elevation from the table's surface. After a while my palms do hurt.
@JesseBAndersen Thanks. I took a look at both tablet and regular editions at a local store, tablet seem to have a much better display, probably the IPS is the only option. The regular x220 seemed to have lower contrast ratio and slight backlight bleeding at completely black pictures. (I always test them with 3D text screen saver), luckily Premium HD (which is supposed to be IPS) option is not too expensive.
@HeadingForTomorrow The speakers were ok. Not great. They are on the bezel of the screen which limits the vibration space needed to produce quality audio.
hey ... i just bought x201 think pad ... ..i have a question.... can i fully close my laptop on the docking station and work by connecting to the monitor....... when i try to close my lappy completely it is going to sleep mode.....i did not had this issue when i had my hp laptop with docking station .... Appreciate your response.... in the video you have demonstrated you haven't fully closed the laptop after connecting it your screen
Thanks a lot for your reply ...one more question...once i connect laptp to my docking station ...what is the best practise to have a good battery life .. is that plugging of once you have reached 100% or just plug continuously and use even the battery reaches 100%
@saikiranalahari01 I'm not sure about this at all. I have heard of people removing the battery once is fully charged. Batteries deteriorate with time. Use Dr. Google or Professor Wikipedia to search for the answers. ;)
@SFseis Most monitors don't come with DP. A lot of DP monitors are expensive, it might have changed since I looked around. I would rather have HDMI. ;) I guess the output only matters depending on the monitor/tv that you want to connect to.
@SFseis That hp wouldn't be a bad choice, but why wouldn't you just buy a 10 buck DP - HDMI/DVI reduction or cable and chose whichever minitor you wanted?

aside from being able to charge a spare battery with the base, can the laptop use the ultrabase battery's energy while connected

@tj87rich The Ultrabase doesn't have a battery built in.

@HeadingForTomorrow I wish I had the IPS screen that I have seen in Lenovo systems on all of my devices. They are amazing.

@HeadingForTomorrow I think Lenovo made only 6-cell batteries for the X220T. I never saw any batteries other than the included ones in these systems.

You can get an adapter to put a 2.5 inch HDD in the cd/dvd drive slot too

Excellent video. I think you are the only one with the most complete details of this dock.
Can you please let us know the specs of your Thinkpad? It seems pretty snappy.
HeadingForTomorrow 7 months ago
@HeadingForTomorrow This is the Core i7-620LM. I had it a while ago and I think it had either 4 or 8GB RAM. It also has a 7200RPM HDD.

saikiranalahari01 1 year ago
@saikiranalahari01 You can do that but you have to adjust the power settings.
Click on the battery icon > More Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does > When I close the lid (on Plugged in column) > Select Do Nothing
And that's how it's done. Check /watch?v=nVN0_9ZeuBk

Wuut? Not a big fan of DP? How come?
I mean, at least the X200 Dock has some sort of digital output ;) And DP is better than DVI. Cables are smaller, plugs are better...
