i took 3 guitar tuners, weedwacker twine, some screws, a shoe box, and a small piece of wood, and a piece of oak and made a 3 string upright bass tuned to a-d-g. It is 1/4 size. the oak goes through the body and comes out the bottem acting like an endpin.
Cool! Your humility is respectable, but don't sell your music short, it's the entertainment and not 64th-note arpeggios that stays in the chest-mounted groove locker.
James Jamerson makes me want to dance more than Jaco ever did...
yikes! not in my wildest dreams could i ever play a Jaco exercise! but thank you for saying so, i just played few nothings here to show what this cardboard box bass sounds like.
by the way, what a great sound for a cardbox upright... I'm looking for something like this here in Brazil, but unfortunately I can not find any music store selling a cardbox upright bass, hehe... I'll build my own in the near future, can u teach me, maybe?
I showed the Boxbass in the music college where I study and it made much success between colleagues. My professor Daniel Morales think the instrument is very good. I intend, also, to use it in the discipline of American Latin Music and we will play a tango from Astor piazzola, the Libertango. When it will be ready I will record and post it in youtube, certainly I will inform you. GoodBye! Douglas Duarte - bass player of BIZPO DO ROZÁRIO band
Today I only play in my Boxbass, it have a great sound for playing and I renounced my fender Jazzbass! In my boxbass I am using as pickup a speaker of 2 inch, 5W and 8 ohm. For the time being it is working good.
Hello! I constructed a Boxbass based on the images in your website. I do not know if my project was similar to yours, but it worked. oh! You are a genius, you created an excellent instrument with few resources.

that's so cool, I should get one of these. It sounds good for some cardboard, but I doubt it could compete with my real upright bass.

what material is used for the strings? i know its tuned to E A and D but what is used for the strings?
XRamhaimX 3 years ago
weed whacker twine. it just wouldnt make sense to use actual bass strings on a cardboard box bass.

It's funny you say that. I long for more recordings of Jaco's earlier stuff, playing chicken pickin' r & b grooves.
