The people arrested were complete idiots. They were specifically told, with a warning of arrest, not to carry anything (bags, backpacks, etc) which could conceal weapons, rocks, or similar, yet did so anyway - claiming police harassment when arrested afterwards. Others were told not to cross a specific point, yet also did so anyway (again resulting in arrest). What did either accomplish, other than wasting taxpayer's money?

That doesn't happen. Activists are always separated in police custody to undermine their resolve. When you can't see or talk to your compatriots, it's easier for cops to play mind games on you about your fellow activists turning on you, that they've sold you out and gone home, etc. Cops are assholes, even the ones who are total sweethearts out of uniform. The nature and politics of the power structure of police depts requires that cops behave within a certain framework at least while on duty.

They were specifically told, with a warning of arrest, not to carry anything (bags, backpacks, etc) which could conceal weapons, rocks, or similar, yet did so anyway - claiming police harassment when arrested afterwards. Others were told not to cross a specific point, yet also did so anyway (again resulting in arrest). What did either accomplish, other than wasting taxpayer's money?

That doesn't happen. Activists are always separated in police custody to undermine their resolve. When you can't see or talk to your compatriots, it's easier for cops to play mind games on you about your fellow activists turning on you, that they've sold you out and gone home, etc. Cops are assholes, even the ones who are total sweethearts out of uniform. The nature and politics of the power structure of police depts requires that cops behave within a certain framework at least while on duty.
