Humm, well I got the letter D but my knowledge of american states wasn't great so I choose Detroit but even then I wasn't sure if that was a state.

It wouldn't need to matter which card he picked. He would have a mathematical formula for each possible card choice. If it DID matter, he could easily have a mirror behind the camera to allow him to select the correct card. The rest is all simple algebra, but a nice trick nonetheless.

haha i didnt know the name of a state with D so i googled it, and saw there was only one state under D and realized the answer had to 4 for this to work. haha that is what gave it away for me... and i worked back and saw how u eventually made me subtract the original number leaving me to work with 8, which u already knew! great trick though! :D

No matter what number you pick in the beginning it will always equal 4 at the end. Therefore, D being the letter. The ONLY state that begins with D is, of course, Delaware! Pretty slick.....

(x * 2 + y)/2 = x + y/2, x + y/2 - x = y/2, the answer was controlled because it didn't matter what number you chose in the first place

@Ghostanator actually it does work. 3.14 * 2 = 6.28 +8 = 14.28 / 2 7.14 - 3.14 = 4

the operation is essentally you choose a number x between 1 and 10 (but it could be any number) double it, add 8 divide it by 2, and then minus the original number. so your left with half of 8 because everything else cancels out.

(2x+8)/2 - x simplifies to (x+4) - x which equals 4 all the time. very basic mathematical equation.

thats 2x + 8. divide by 2.

thats x + 4. substract the number you picked initially.

Umm... this seems like a maths trick.

I haven't checked yet, but my guess is that this works with any interger between 1 and 10.

Also, Delaware is the only state in the US beginning with "D" (Dakota doesn't count, because it's either North Dakota or South Dakota).
