I don't can decide my voting, because there are so many good songs! I really love the entries from Spain, the UK, Iceland, France, Yugoslavia, Italy. My ranking:
Place 1 for Spain, Iceland and France.
Place 2 for the UK and Italy.
Place 3 for Yugoslavia.
A hard decision between Spain, Iceland and France. I think these 3 songs are absolutly great!
I remember those days.. And those hair do(n't)s!!!! Were the spectators that boring? (and bored, obviously)? Nothing like what happens nowadays, thank god!
Anyway, after so many years the songs sound really outdated, good thing Italy and France saved the day. Personal fave: Israel! What a song and what a performance!
this is spain calling: 1 Denmark 2 Israel 3 Ireland 4 Italy 5 Luxembourg 6 Norway 7 France 8 The Netherlands 10 Iceland and 12 points goes to... YUGOSLAVIA
As I see now, according to what you say, theres not need to win the contest to succeed in others countries, this group transmits a lot strenght and rythm singing, they should have won, although as always happens for many spaniards they did indeed, a pity they were not reconigzed in Europe, but I am glad to know their song was so popular in others countries, they had a lot succeed in spain still nowadays people identifies this group with this song, and in southamerica as well.
Here are my votes: 1 point to Denmark 2 point to Sweden 3 point to Iceland 4 point to France 5 point to ireland 6 point to Norway 7 point to Austria 8 point to Spain 10 point to Yugoslavia 12 point to Italy
Here are the results of the Eurovision Song Contest 1990 from a Belgian fan Iceland - 1 point Austria - 2 points Ireland - 3 points Sweden - 4 points Luxemburg - 5 points Israel - 6 points Yugoslavia - 7 points Italy - 8 points and then, it became very difficult but finally I decided to give Spain - 10 points France - 12 points
After quite a long time, here's an update on our poll - the top-10... 1) Spain 422 2) France 345 3) Yugoslavia 300 4) Italy 261 5) Austria 209 6) Israel 200 7) Netherlands 194 8) Belgium 170 9) Iceland 156 10) Luxembourg 155
...and the rest: 11) Ireland 154 12) UK 124 13) Denmark 114 14) Turkey 97 15) Germany 89 16) Portugal 83 17) Sweden 72 18) Norway 66 19) Cyprus 65 20) Switzerland 34 21) Finland 34 22) Greece 14 Let's wrap this up, people. I think August 15 is a good date for closing this poll, so if you still haven't voted, do it now!
I usually don't do this kind of thing, but this seeing as this is my favorite Eurovision year... 1 to Italy 2 to Austria 3 to United Kingdom 4 to Portugal 5 to Ireland 6 to Iceland 7 to Denmark 8 to Yugoslavia 10 to France 12 to SPAIN.
Has it been 2 weeks since my last update?! Well then, here's a new one - with two back-to-back 12s helping Austria climb from 7th to 5th place and Iceland breaking into the top-10 for the first time! 1) Spain 323 2) France 281 3) Italy 200 4) Yugoslavia 189 5) Austria 165 6) Netherlands 160 7) Israel 154 8) Belgium 132 9) Luxembourg 130 10) Iceland 117
My votes are: 12 Austria 10 Iceland 8 Norway 7 Switzerland 6 Portugal 5 Germany 4 UK 3 Denmark 2 Sweden 1 Finland Ta,1989 was ok, 1988 was a fab year thou!
Hello! May I do some small changes in my voting? If it's ok, here's my new votes: 1 point: Portugal 2: Cyprus 3: Luxembourg 4: Israel 5: Austria 6: Italy 7: Iceland 8: Yugoslavia 10: France 12: Spain!
My favourite year ever: 1p Spain (not that I don't like it, but it has enough votes) 2p Finland (I don't know why you don't like it) 3p Ireland 4p France 5p Yugoslavia 6p Italy (in '90 Europe needed that song) 7p Denmark 8p Netherlands 10p Israel 12p Luxembourg Also UK, Cyprus and Austria had very good songs but TOP10 is TOP10...
The latest votes help hosts Yugoslavia climb to 4th place and Austria catch up with Israel in 6th. Here's the current scoreboard: 1) Spain 273 2) France 239 3) Italy 168 4) Yugoslavia 148 5) Netherlands 135 =6) Austria 125 =6) Israel 125 8) Belgium 120 9) Luxembourg 105 10) Ireland 97
After Xaosamiou's vote, here's an update on the full scoreboard - the top-10... 1) Spain 248 2) France 210 3) Italy 146 4) Netherlands 126 5) Yugoslavia 120 6) Austria 114 7) Israel 113 8) Belgium 102 9) Luxembourg 99 10) Ireland 90
And the rest..... Ok, I start this from the beginning! 1)Yugoslavia 2)Germany 3)Greece 4)Luxemburg 5)France 6)United Kingdom 7)Denmark 8)Iceland 10)Norway 12)Italy And thats the complite of the banana jury =) Good luck from Norway! =)
The latest votes help the Netherlands and Austria climb to 4th and 6th place, respectively: 1) Spain 238 2) France 183 3) Italy 121 4) Netherlands 118 5) Yugoslavia 114 6) Austria 110 7) Israel 103 8) Belgium 102 9) Luxembourg 94 10) Ireland 86 No change in last place: (ahem) Greece, with 6 points
More Icelandic votes, quite different though. 1 - Sweden 2 - Yugoslavia 3 - Norway 4 - Ireland 5 - UK 6 - Netherlands 7 - Belgium 8 - Denmark 10 - France 12 - Spain PS Where is the love for Stjórnin ? We were so proud back in the day....
Seems that an update on the scoreboard is lacking here, so here it is - with Italy breaking into the top-3 and the Netherlands jumping from 8th to 5th place: 1) Spain 218 2) France 156 3) Italy 114 4) Yugoslavia 105 5) Netherlands 100 6) Israel 96 =7) Austria 88 =7) Belgium 88 9) Luxembourg 83 10) Ireland 71
My 1990 votes: 1 point to Austria 2 points to United Kingdom (eh, shoulda been John Miles) 3 points to Portugal 4 points to Switzerland 5 points to Norway 6 points to Spain 7 points to Yugoslavia 8 points to Italy 10 points to Netherlands and 12 points to... France
time for another update on the top ten and spain are now over 40 points ahead of their nearest rivals France while ireland creep up to 8th place (about time!) 1 Spain 173 2 France 132 3 Yugoslavia 91 4 Italy 88 5 Israel 84 6 Austria 81 7 Luxembourg 78 8= Ireland 68 8= Netherlands 68 10 Belgium 67
and the rest.. 11 Turkey 51 12 Iceland 49 13 Denamrk 43 14 Germany 35 15 UK 28 16= Portugal 19` 16= Sweden 19 18 Finland 14 (im surprised its got this many points) 19= Norway 8 19= Switzerland 8 19= Cyprus 8 Greece now hold the wooden spoon with a meagre 6 points.
Hello, My results United Kingdom 1 pt; Finland 2 pts; Norway 3 pts; France 4 pts; Austria 5 pts; Netherlands 6 pts; Spain 7 pts; Israel 8 pts; Luxembourg 10 pts and Ireland 12 pts!
joelle is putting up a fight but just doesn't seem able to catch up with the bandidos while tacji and simone are battling it out for 3rd place. 1. Spain 133 2. France 112 3. Yugoslavia 72 4. Austria 71 5. Italy 65 6. Luxembourg 64 7. Israel 59 8. Netherlands 55 9. Belgium 53 10. Turkey 48 the brandenburg tor has been sealed shut on norway who remain in last place with 2 points
i think it is just about time for another update. spain are still out in front while france are hot on their heels but just cant get enough to catch up. meanwhile italy is in the top 5 for the first time 1 Spain 121 2 France 101 3 Austria 63 4 Italy 61 5 Yugoslavia 60 6= Luxembourg 54 6= Luxembourg 54 8 Israel 49 9 Belgium 47 10 Turkey 36

Excellent year, my vote 1 p. Spain 2 p. Germany 3 p. Luxemburg 4 p. France 5 p. Irland 6 p. Denmark 7 p. Belgien 8 p. Portugal 10p. Turkey 12p. Israel
As for the Irish entry. I remember watching the national final and thinking that it wasnt great and wouldnt do well. But it is the sort of song that grows on you from repeated listening. IMO it deserved its high placing on the night.
It's eerie hearing that some people were only watching ESC for the first time given that I had been watching it for more than 20 years at that stage.
Looking at the voting here I'm not surprised that Spain has a commanding lead - great song & great performance. I wonder whether it's Toto's reputation rahter than the song that sees Italy lagging in the vote here.
Interesting thought about Toto - and I think you have a point there. I vaguely remember watching the contest (just to freak you out more, it was also one of the first ESCs in my memory :-P) and the Italian entry being one of those that immediately stuck to mind on first listening - maybe this instant appeal was what swung the juries over back then. But, mind you, I was only 13 at the time...
I remember the day after the 90 contest talking to some Italians & telling them Italy had won with Toto singing & they laughed - a lot. They thought it a joke. And IMO because of his reputation from presenting many ESC fans think him a joke as well aka votes here. But if you extract the song - listen to it on CD - it does sound good. IMO
Yes, I agree it does sound good, although a bit pompous, IMO - and I have to admit that his performance on the night was faultless (esp. in the backing vocals department). Still, as I said, with all the amazing stuff that Italy sent over the years, it's kind of a pity that they won with one of their less memorable entries.
And, as for your Italian friends, wait, wasn't he already a big star in Italy? At least I remember his "Lasciatemi cantare" song (a Google search reminded me it was called "L'Italiano") being all over the Greek radio when I was a kid.
Not only that but he'd had gigs all over Europe at the time, including in Scandinavia. Can't agree on Toto, though - I really don't see what made him win, the song has no hook that grabs me even though it's a good song. I can think of a host of other songs that year I'd rather have won (or done way better, while we're at it!). Why couldn't Italy win with "I treni di Tozeur" or "Avrei voluto" instead?
Or "Rapsodia", or "Fiumi di Parole", or (for me at least) "Gente di Mare", or "Si" (ok, this had the misfortune of falling upon Abba), or "Era", or "Comme E DDoce o' Mare", or - yes - "Volare"... I could go on forever.
You're perfectly correct, Toto was already a very established singer in 1990, the Italians I spoke to said that, but still thought him a joke. As for Seth's comments on the song. i will stand by what I said that it was one of the better songs that year. and yes there have been better Italian songs - much better.
Well, I like tasos think it's a shame that when Italy finally won again, it was with one of their less memorable entries. And 1990, for me, was full of strong, memorable songs and performances. Insieme is in fact one of my least favourites from 1990. It's a good song, but I'd rather put a host of other entries in front of it.
Ah, so the Italians already knew he was kind of the class clown - and they STILL got him to present next year? Then again, his hosting gig gave us so much to talk about and has since become the stuff of legend, so maybe that's what RAI was going for all along :-D
& you dont freak me out informing me that 90 was one of your earliest ESC memories, but when I discuss all & any contest with people & realise that many I would have seen live while other people werent even born, it's a bit weird. But I wouldnt trade my memories of great occasions for anything.
after 11 votes spain are still maintaining a lead with france still trying to catch up. 1. spain 106 2. france 87 3. yugoslavia 60 4. netherlands 52 5. austria 50 6= italy 41 6= luxembourg 41 8. belgium 39 9. israel 36 (slipping down) 10= turkey 26 10= iceland 26 the last two votes mean that nobody has 0 points. portugal and sweden are currently bottom with 1 point each (losers).
Votes from Poland are coming: 1p Portugal 2p Cyprus 3p Ireland 4p Austria 5p Spain (they REALLY don't need points from me...) 6p Italy 7p France 8p Yugoslavia 10p Denmark 12p Netherlands It was very difficult to make my TOP10 and I'm sorry that UK, Israel and Luxembourg didn't receive points from me...
Yes, another year when the juries bombed and we rock! I like the way this voting is going very much, far better than the inexplicable results of the night.
Adding my share to the counting of votes, here's a first view of the full scoreboard after the vote of my Polish friend - and I must say that, up to now, in no other year has the scoring been more different from the results of the actual contest! Here it is, the top-10... 1) Spain 77 2) France 64 3) Yugoslavia 50 4) Austria 38 5) Israel 36 =6) Belgium 34 =6) Luxembourg 34 8) Netherlands 30 9) Italy 28 10) Turkey 22
Hm, a good year.. not the best.. but most of the were good entries:-D. Here are the Patricks vote: 1.Ireland (a bit too overrated for me) 2.Netherlands 3.Belgium 4.United Kingdom 5.Luxembourg (at least I'll give it 5 points, but I agree, underrated) 6.Italy (an OK song, but no winner:\ 7.Austria (catchy:) 8.France 10.Yugoslavia (wow, this song REALLY stood out, the singing, performance, teh song:-D) And finally 12.SPAIN!!! (1 WORD, A-M-A-Z-I-N-G)
i feel like adding another update on the top 10! the bandidos are still in the lead but joelle is creeping up behind them while tajci moves up to 3rd. 1. Spain 65 2. France 56 3. Yugoslavia 40 4. Israel 36 5=. Austria 31 5=. Belgium 31 7. Luxembourg 29 8. Netherlands 28 9=.Turkey 22 9=. Italy 22 bottom of the pile: greece, cyprus and portugal with 0 points
Yugoslavia's best. She became ultra-famous in Yugoslavia after this performance!! 12-YUGOSLAVIA 10-FRANCE 08-NETHERLANDS 07-GERMANY 06-AUSTRIA 05-IRELAND 04-LUXEMBOURG 03-SPAIN 02-BELGIUM 01-DENMARK
My Top 10 in this year I wouldn't call very strong, 1988 was better... Without Norway as always (I think "Brandenburger Tor" was a rather poor song) 1 point: The Netherlands 2: Belgium 3: Finland 4: Luxembourg 5: Austria 6: Yugoslavia (B I M B O ! :-P) 7: Iceland 8: Italy (Not THAT bad!) 10: France (A masterpeice!) And the 12 points goes to: Spain! ( Emotional eventhough the embarrasing start and absolutely the best of 1990!)
Jeg likte Finlands sang, den var litt fengende og har visst en viss viktig budskap i seg. Israel hadde en flott sang, men jeg likte ikke sangeren, hun hadde en ALTFOR lys stemme for min smak, dessverre.
I think 1990 was one of the best Eurovision years. I had REAL difficulty leaving out a lot of songs. Of course they weren't all perfect, but this year I found way better than '88, personally.
Here's my top-10: 1 point: Italy (certainly not bad, but FAR from Italy's or 1990's best) 2: Netherlands 3: Israel (18th place for such a powerful performance?! Come on!) 4: Turkey (also very underrated) 5: Austria 6: Belgium (see Turkey) 7: Yugoslavia (fun!) 8: Luxembourg (their last truly great entry - and, yes, criminally underrated) 10: Spain (the year's most modern song) and 12 points to... France! (starting a series of AMAZING French entries)
Coming off a late-80s slump, 1990 was a year of surprising quality - incl. a few entries that tried to bring the ESC sound up to date with the times - serving as a first taste of the new highs the contest would achieve during the 90s. Of course, the juries managed to screw up the scoring AGAIN, putting one of Italy's weakest entries at the top... but, um, let's try not to get into that.
Sorry, you've opened doors. :Þ The juries messed up this contest even worse than the one in 1988, but at least that one had a deserving winner. In 1990, there was a number of overrated songs (Italy, the UK and, I'll admit, Ireland), with a plethora of underrated ones (the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Israel e.g.). How did they do it?!
Yes, even poor Wogan himself was stumped. Save for France (and maybe Germany), ALL of his picks failed miserably in the voting. As he often says, the juries must have been listening to different songs...
You know, that almost ALL of his picks were my particular favourites - Netherlands, Spain, Luxemburg, Israel - so it felt satisfying to watch the voting with his commentary; it was like my own, frustrated voice translated into words.
I think that if you watch all the voting there appears to be a considerable amount of tactical voting where juries from some favourite countries were trying to lessen the chances of other favourite countries- Ireland was almost the main exception -ensuring Italian victory at their own expense, while the Italian & French neutralised themselves & Ireland.
Indeed - the Italian voting esp. was the most conspicuous and suspicion-raising, giving NO points to Ireland and France at a very critical point. I'd like to believe this was just a coincidence and that the Italian jury voted purely based on personal taste, but it's still eyebrow-raising with the way they deprived you of victory (then again, would you really like having had to host the thing 5 times in 8 years?) ;-)
It doesnt matter now & I'm only speculating, it's just a conversation point. But if you look at the way the lead and placings changed so much throughout it adds to the suspicion, the Italians were just the most suspect. It could explain Wogan's even greater perplexity

My votes:
1 point Denmark (catchy!)
2 Luxembourg (their last good entry. Underrated)
3 Italy (A good song, imo, but not a winner)
5 Ireland (It seems it´s not a favourite here, but i just love it)
6 Iceland (Here starts my love for the Icelandic songs in this contest, exept ´95 and ´01)
7 France (Love the rythm and her dress)
8 Germany (very powerfull song)
10 Spain (Eaven after some technical problems at the start they kicked ass!
12 Yugoslavia (Could´t they win with this instead?)

As for the Irish entry. I remember watching the national final and thinking that it wasnt great and wouldnt do well. But it is the sort of song that grows on you from repeated listening. IMO it deserved its high placing on the night.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
It's eerie hearing that some people were only watching ESC for the first time given that I had been watching it for more than 20 years at that stage.
Looking at the voting here I'm not surprised that Spain has a commanding lead - great song & great performance. I wonder whether it's Toto's reputation rahter than the song that sees Italy lagging in the vote here.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Interesting thought about Toto - and I think you have a point there. I vaguely remember watching the contest (just to freak you out more, it was also one of the first ESCs in my memory :-P) and the Italian entry being one of those that immediately stuck to mind on first listening - maybe this instant appeal was what swung the juries over back then. But, mind you, I was only 13 at the time...
tasosk3 4 years ago
I remember the day after the 90 contest talking to some Italians & telling them Italy had won with Toto singing & they laughed - a lot. They thought it a joke. And IMO because of his reputation from presenting many ESC fans think him a joke as well aka votes here. But if you extract the song - listen to it on CD - it does sound good. IMO
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Yes, I agree it does sound good, although a bit pompous, IMO - and I have to admit that his performance on the night was faultless (esp. in the backing vocals department). Still, as I said, with all the amazing stuff that Italy sent over the years, it's kind of a pity that they won with one of their less memorable entries.
tasosk3 4 years ago
And, as for your Italian friends, wait, wasn't he already a big star in Italy? At least I remember his "Lasciatemi cantare" song (a Google search reminded me it was called "L'Italiano") being all over the Greek radio when I was a kid.
tasosk3 4 years ago
Not only that but he'd had gigs all over Europe at the time, including in Scandinavia. Can't agree on Toto, though - I really don't see what made him win, the song has no hook that grabs me even though it's a good song. I can think of a host of other songs that year I'd rather have won (or done way better, while we're at it!). Why couldn't Italy win with "I treni di Tozeur" or "Avrei voluto" instead?
setheurovision94 4 years ago
Or "Rapsodia", or "Fiumi di Parole", or (for me at least) "Gente di Mare", or "Si" (ok, this had the misfortune of falling upon Abba), or "Era", or "Comme E DDoce o' Mare", or - yes - "Volare"... I could go on forever.
tasosk3 4 years ago
True, I forgot all those, and times into infinity...
setheurovision94 4 years ago
You're perfectly correct, Toto was already a very established singer in 1990, the Italians I spoke to said that, but still thought him a joke. As for Seth's comments on the song. i will stand by what I said that it was one of the better songs that year. and yes there have been better Italian songs - much better.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Well, I like tasos think it's a shame that when Italy finally won again, it was with one of their less memorable entries. And 1990, for me, was full of strong, memorable songs and performances. Insieme is in fact one of my least favourites from 1990. It's a good song, but I'd rather put a host of other entries in front of it.
setheurovision94 4 years ago
Ah, so the Italians already knew he was kind of the class clown - and they STILL got him to present next year? Then again, his hosting gig gave us so much to talk about and has since become the stuff of legend, so maybe that's what RAI was going for all along :-D
tasosk3 4 years ago
& you dont freak me out informing me that 90 was one of your earliest ESC memories, but when I discuss all & any contest with people & realise that many I would have seen live while other people werent even born, it's a bit weird. But I wouldnt trade my memories of great occasions for anything.

NorwegianSalmon 4 years ago
Jeg likte Finlands sang, den var litt fengende og har visst en viss viktig budskap i seg. Israel hadde en flott sang, men jeg likte ikke sangeren, hun hadde en ALTFOR lys stemme for min smak, dessverre.

I think 1990 was one of the best Eurovision years. I had REAL difficulty leaving out a lot of songs. Of course they weren't all perfect, but this year I found way better than '88, personally.

Coming off a late-80s slump, 1990 was a year of surprising quality - incl. a few entries that tried to bring the ESC sound up to date with the times - serving as a first taste of the new highs the contest would achieve during the 90s. Of course, the juries managed to screw up the scoring AGAIN, putting one of Italy's weakest entries at the top... but, um, let's try not to get into that.
tasosk3 4 years ago
Sorry, you've opened doors. :Þ The juries messed up this contest even worse than the one in 1988, but at least that one had a deserving winner. In 1990, there was a number of overrated songs (Italy, the UK and, I'll admit, Ireland), with a plethora of underrated ones (the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Israel e.g.). How did they do it?!
setheurovision94 4 years ago
Yes, even poor Wogan himself was stumped. Save for France (and maybe Germany), ALL of his picks failed miserably in the voting. As he often says, the juries must have been listening to different songs...
tasosk3 4 years ago
You know, that almost ALL of his picks were my particular favourites - Netherlands, Spain, Luxemburg, Israel - so it felt satisfying to watch the voting with his commentary; it was like my own, frustrated voice translated into words.
setheurovision94 4 years ago 2
I think that if you watch all the voting there appears to be a considerable amount of tactical voting where juries from some favourite countries were trying to lessen the chances of other favourite countries- Ireland was almost the main exception -ensuring Italian victory at their own expense, while the Italian & French neutralised themselves & Ireland.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Indeed - the Italian voting esp. was the most conspicuous and suspicion-raising, giving NO points to Ireland and France at a very critical point. I'd like to believe this was just a coincidence and that the Italian jury voted purely based on personal taste, but it's still eyebrow-raising with the way they deprived you of victory (then again, would you really like having had to host the thing 5 times in 8 years?) ;-)
tasosk3 4 years ago
It doesnt matter now & I'm only speculating, it's just a conversation point. But if you look at the way the lead and placings changed so much throughout it adds to the suspicion, the Italians were just the most suspect. It could explain Wogan's even greater perplexity
