@LordHettrick No offense please - but for my taste - Ms. Flemming's voice is too "mushy" for Mozart's Sacral Music. However, I found her to be excellent in the Met's performance ARMIDA, which I had a chance to see @ the movie theatre recently. Am no expert - and strongly believe that the beauty of music is in the ear of the beholder ;o) So please 'forgive' me, if I have offended your favourite singer?
@mmbmbmbmb You have not offended anyone, especially not me. I was just surprised by your comment, since I find her excellent. I can understand your point, though. What would you consider to be a good voice for this kind of sacred music? A clearer voice, like Kiri Te Kanawa?
@LordHettrick ... YES! I have just listened to Kiri Te Kanawa (Exsultate, jubilate, posted by LaBelleHelene). A truly amazing performance. Perhaps you would like to listen to another great Mozart interpretation: Kathleen Battle, AGNUS DEI/Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART, conducted by Herbert von Karajan. Enjoy!
These are the Worst Coloraturas EVER!!! I can't understand, not just one note!!! it's not possible to sing coloratura with vibratto, the tempo gets slower and slower because she's not capable to sing the notes as fast as it takes to. Listen to Bartoli, Auger, Genaux, Kirkby, Guberova, Kozena... I'm sorry, I'm Renee's biggest fan but she didn't do this well, it should be faster and more precize, I should actually be able to understand the notes!!! not this huge vibrato-legato she makes...
I wish I had a cat that talented... fluent in at least x4 languages, recipient of numerous honouree degrees ,And doctorates. Hailed as one of the most talented musicians of her generation... not to mention her personal and financial successes. Tell you what if you see a local stray that displays an ounce of these attributes... please send [her] along to me ;). She can keep my lap warm any day. My warm and kindest regards,
Ok. Renee is my favorite..ever. but check out shirley verrett's version on youtube. it is better. it is cleaner and dare i say more beautiful. just check it out.
BRAVA!!! I think some of you are expecting something lighter. It is very important to keep your minds open when you listen to classical, and understand that great singers that perform will give their own personal interpretation and they don't have to change their voice to fit something they can do. Who said the voice had to be so light always anyways? If she was oversinging or making her voice darker I would understand, but she isn't. Listen, and enjoy! This fits her perfectly.
Sorry dolicimani...not a joke, the performance was not splendid by any stretch of the word. I am not a Fleming hater, and I was not making a net comment on her overall artistry, but I have seen this performed better by college music majors. The performance was more of a series of assaults than exaltations.
Not that this couldn't have been performed much more poorly, and no doubt that it has in the past and will be in the future, but she rather assaults the notes here. This should be glorious and exalting as opposed to aggressive and spastic. Not a very pretty rendition.
Oh please can you post the other movements?!! I'm performing this in a month and would love to see her do the other movements.
She makes different musical choices from what I would do, but that's okay - we're different singers and if everyone did it the same we'd just listen to the one recording and be done with it. Vive la difference.
Why was that even necessary? If you didn't care for this performance then why didn't you just give it a poor rating. Why did you have to subject us to your petty ignorance?
For your information, I mean she is bad in a good way. If i had something bad to say i wouldn't have say it. I think Renee Fleming is one of the best opera singers out there.
I have the video of Kiri te Kanawa singing this, and this is true that Renee Fleming not only sings it better but has better facial expressions. Don't get me wrong Te Kanawa sings it beautfully and could not be touched until Fleming came along...
I agree with you, Boris. I used to think that no one could surpass Kiri's version. But here, Renée's got the expressiveness & joyful emotion that Kiri never had. Brava.
Renee Fleming for me is my 'grande decouverte". I thought that after Kiri Te Kanawa's performing nobody could reach her sommet. But Renee does it. Amazing, really amazing.
Ordinarily I don't like Renee Fleming, but this isn't bad at all. Her runs are clean. Her breath support is definitely off. How do I know? Listen to how fast the sound dies as soon as she sings and it's part of why she's scooping certain notes. However, this is a good performance. Not perfect, but definitely not bad at all.
I have had the pleasure of being in the audience of her Lincoln Center concert, a year and a half ago, and the woman is a Goddess. The BREATH support just blows the audience away with the overwhelming sound made by this angel of music. Her voice is just so beautiful, that recordings don't do her justice. I would follow this woman's voice to the ends of the Earth.
AWESOME. I'm too sleepy to comment much, but I remember watching this on PBS years ago. Could you post the EXULTATE, JUBILATE and TU VIRGINUM CORONA so we can enjoy the whole thing, please? :)
I love Renée Fleming! Her singing can only be described with only one word: flawless. I don't mean flawless because it's technically amazing and vocally unique, but also because she can join all the necessary vocal qualities of a soprano into one vocal instrument, which is characterized by flowing, steady and precise vocal lines. Her timbre is definitely unforgettable, such is the unique colour of her voice, both moving and sumptuous. ;-)
Oh my, how DOES she do it? She really makes this her own piece and gets the expressive nature of Mozart's sacred music down pat! Her coloratura is amazing and the warmth in her voice is always so beautiful. One thing, I just wish she wouldn't try and scoop up to that last high C, which is something she does sometimes as part of her interpretation. Other than that, such a good performance! Thanks for posting!
