libel is part of any free society that values justice. It can be abused like any kind of other freedom or law, perhaps or perhaps not in the case of harper. It's important in a free society to be able to recouperate both reputation and material loss caused directly by false information about an individual, group or institution.

@Gman256 yes but that should not apply to word of mouth, people should be able to say what they want without lawful repercutions. I could understand libel law as applied to business practices but not on a personal basis. Should Canadian Tire be able to sue because i tell other people they automotive service is shit. Libel law is for whinners who don't get there way, remeber the tattle tale in school, thats libel law!
