  • Thank you for sharing this deeply moving rendition by Barenboim. Can you please tell me if it is available on cd?

  • Wagner is a musical genius, period. His music is unbelievably beautiful. Whether he was racist, nationalist, jew, black, white, Chinese, vegetarian, gay, megalomaniacal, selfish, narcissistic: I couldn't care less.

I listen to his music and I am simply amazed.

Punkt.

  • slightly faster tempo than the Solti and Karajan versions---i find the faster tempo actually suits the overture a little better.

  • good performance of this solemn prelude.

  • The arguments people have on "classical" music videos, are worse than the ones people have on dubstep videos. Sort it out.

  • The conductor looks like Michael Keaton, lol.

  • @historygenius loool you made my fucking day, because after 5 minuts thinking about that, I still don't get why you said this haha

  • @cocardeux because he kinda does, lol XD

  • Goosebumps on my goosebumps!

  • That music is simply thrilling. Whoever wrote it couldn't be someone who felt any hate. I'm thankful for this masterpiece.

  • I read so much hate here. Wagner probably was an idiot and anti-semite, but in this prelude I do not hear one word against jews. I hear the beautiful virtue of compassion, empathy and sympathy for those who suffer. I hear the mystery of religion and the big universe we are all part of. Face it wether you like it or not, his music is genius.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe Wagner was not an idiot, he was a genius, idiot

  • @claraque Just read what I wrote: Wagner 'PROBABLY' was an idiot.... After reading stories and watching tvdocumentries about his life and personality. At the end I wrote how genius his music was. Read well before commenting others, because you give the impression now you're an idiot yourself;)

  • @kurbiscremesuppe You being deceived by smear campaign doesn't make him "probably an idiot" only you. (:

  • @OldSchopenhauer Have you ever read a biography or seen documentries about Wagner? Somebody with such behaviour I call an idiot, nevertheless he was a genius when I speak about his music. Either you've read my comment wrong or you are jewisch and hate everything about wagner and the rest of the world.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe Confusing a genius for an idiot and claiming he's both is incredibly idiotic itself. You come off as an insolent ignoramus who unlike Wagner is incapable of any musical genius.

  • @OldSchopenhauer No point discussing with you, because you don't read what I am saying. Go back to school please and save this comment page from your silly writings.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe I did read it, it was stupid.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe Thinking that I didn't read what you wrote is silly.

Calling Wagner an idiot is sillier. (:

  • @OldSchopenhauer Somebody like wagner who lived from other peoples money I call an idiot. Someone who was selfish like Wagner I call an idiot. Someone who wrote beautiful opera's like Wagner did I call a genius. So he was both. But don't worry, you are by far the biggest idiot here on youtube;)

  • @kurbiscremesuppe Convincing people to fund your life's passion (as well as your life itself) is the exact opposite of stupid. You have a very warped view of intelligence.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe Are you really too stupid to know what patronage is? Every musician then lived off of "other people's money".

Persuading others to fund your life passion ( as well as your life itself) is the exact opposite of idiotic.

Your insolence is not needed, but it is slightly amusing.

  • @OldSchopenhauer I'm very sorry for your enviroment that they have to deal with you. Good luck in life.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe Before you post an attempt to insult someone's intelligence you should learn how to spell the words you're going to use, like "enviroment" correctly, okay?

    I'll give you a hint: there's another N that needs to be added. ( ;

  • @OldSchopenhauer As said, I'm very sorry for everyone.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe I forgive you.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe call Wagner selfish, narcissistic, megalomaniacal even, but stupid? I think not - he was one of the most cunning people around (as well as being a musical genius and an intellectual).

  • @sstuddert Were did I call Wagner stupid? I didn't write that here..

  • @kurbiscremesuppe you must have a very strange idea of what the definition of the word "idiot" is then.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe "I hear the beautiful virtue of compassion, empathy and sympathy for those who suffer." You may have some king of ears I dont have. Personaly I just hear good music. You can express empathy with a pop song too. Remember "we are the world"? I tend to say: music in itself express only beauty.

  • @kurbiscremesuppe Anyone who writes "wagner probably was an idiot" is an idiot.

  • Actually though, did all the first explorer/inhabitor ships land at Botany Bay??

  • @sstudent *_*sarcoma support?? .... I very nearly subscribed to an actual medical support group for this kind of cancer today ..... I thought best to wait a few days ... see how it is possibly viral!?.....anyway.....the federated Australian ship landed at Botany Bay.

  • satanist music

  • Magee*

  • Wagner 1813 - 1883. WWII 1939 - 1945. The composer cannot be implicated in the conflicts of the 20th century - He was not around at the time. Get a life and enjoy the music, you'll probably hear nothing better than Wagner no matter how long you live.

  • Fucking jews.

  • @sevenalay Best comment on here.

  • RIchard Wagner was antisemistic. You just have to read his writings on politics to know that.

  • @Krig888, Wagner was human and more complicated than you believe. He handpicked his Jewish friend Hermann Levi to conduct the premiere of Parsifal and Levi continued to conduct at Bayreuth for many years afterwards.

  • I am a politically left. I regret that Wagner in 2011 is still seen through the distorting mirror of distortion of the meanings of his work done by the Nazis. Wagner has nothing in common with Nazism and anti-Semitism. I believe that Wagner was a German patriot, as Verdi was an Italian patriot.

  • What about Wagner's Music says "Kill all Jews"? What about his music says "Antisemitism"? Nothing. Besides the fact that some of his pieces were written to depict German/Norse Mythology, nothing in this can be said to convey hate towards non-Aryan groups.

It is all the dissenters who carry on the legacy of antisemitism every time they talk about how much they hate it. That brass fanfare at around 6:00 says nothing but compassion. Why don't you hear it? Because you choose to hear hate. Vile...

    Gioachino Rossini

  • @j4kc90 no one cares about what that italian had to say.

  • @sstuddert If you knew something about classical music, you would care

  • @j4kc90 nope, I have no interest in the opinions of a tunesmith hack.

  • @sstuddert ahahah you are terrific :D. If You have no interest why do you waste your preciuos time in commentig? And also you are so arrogant and blinked in your judgment that you think everyone shares your same idea

  • @j4kc90 I never said everyone shares my same idea - I never even implied it.

People can have their own ideas about things; that doesn't, however, entail that those ideas are always right.

  • @sstuddert "no-one cares about what that italian had to say"

  • @j4kc90 I'm sorry, I didn't realise I was holding discourse with a pedant. What I should have said is "no one of consequence cares about what that Italian had to say", then even someone like you might have understood what I meant.

  • @sstuddert At the time this piece was written Australia was nothing more than an enormous prison.

  • @wks1978 Well, Australia was already on its way to being federated at the time this was written, a convict ship hadn't arrived for 30 years by this point.

  • Attention trolls: Gentlemen you may have heard of who admired Nazism and who - unlike Wagner - actually existed at the time: Henry Ford, George Patton, Charles Lindbergh, Walt Disney, members of the British Royal Family. Go find their videos and pollute their achievements with discussions of politics.

  • @VileIntentionsUS It's ironic to me that our generation seeks to censor Nietzsche, Heidegger, Wagner, and many others for the sin of 'Nazism.' As long as we're purging our culture of 'Nazis', why not take back the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the Apollo 11 Flights?

Or does no one know that Heisenberg led the Nazi bomb project or that von Braun designed the V2 rocket as well as putting a man on the moon?

I don't hear anyone rushing to defame Bobby Fischer for hating Jews.

  • @VileIntentionsUS George Patton was a nazi????? wtf?

  • @VileIntentionsUS

Walt Disney was not a gentleman. in fact, quite the opposite. He abused Wagner's music for his vulgar cartoon films.

  • @Woggyflush which cartoons, please....? nothing in Fantasia or Fantasia 2000.... what else?

  • @gaemp

sorry i have forgotten the title but I've watched the cartoon long time ago.

  • @gaemp the original looney tunes, all carefully unfold by the sounds of wagner , where I first developed my love for his profound music

  • @VileIntentionsUS haha genius comment ;)

  • Amazing AMAZING so mysterious

  • Divine Wagner, as well as a human musician can be under the Grace of God.

  • Holy sh**. I understand Nietzsche now. Although he hated the Christian decadence of Wagner which started with Parsifal, he couldn't resist to ask: "Has Wagner ever done anything better?"

  • I advise you all to read Bryan Mcgee's 'Wagner and Philosophy' it dispels these stupid accusations that he was some kind of proto-Nazi and the Nazis themselves were captivated and spellbound by his music, when in fact it was only really Hitler himself who was obsessed with Wagner.

  • @oknarbtal No, he could not.

    Nietzsche also could not.

And this inability is the open gate to our present.

  • @oknarbtal Nietzsche was a deluded nihilist.

  • Comment removed

  • @oknarbtal If you think Wagner was a real Christian you are truly ignorant!

  • Was he not an adherent of Martin Luther?

  • @tetrisclock Being in a denomination, being a regular church goer means NOTHING. Many do this and have never accepted Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Wagner certainly wasn't living for Christ.

  • @zinpgh Wagner was just as much a Christian as anyother self-proclaimed Christian; especially in his latter life. Nietzsche saw Wagner as an example of decadence and Nihilism. Accepting Christ as Lord and Savior doesn't mean anything any more -- in fact it never ment anything! Christianity was created to quail man's (particularly the slave's) spirit for life and replace it with hope for a better one. That life is something to be put up with, and glad to be rid of when it's over.

  • @danieljliversLXXXIX Sure Nietzsche distanced himself from nihilism, but when you remove God that's what you are left with as any system of morality will be 'ad hoc', arbitrary and relativistic. Nietzsche's philosophy of the self is very nihilistic in cosmology and ontology, it's ironic he could not himself see that truth. And your comments regarding Christian faith are woefully erroneous. Equating any self-identifying Christian with any other is ludicrous. Christ is not man made.

  • @zinpgh Whenever the trumpets of the otherworldly are sounded, Nihilism is not far behide. Removing God my lead to Nihilism (it's sad that removing a lie leads to destruction), but the point of Nietzsche was to overcome these feelings and create something better. Christ was man made from the start. It was a corruption of the Pagan mystery teachings, which, in a way, mirrors Nietzsche's thought. Christianity is the one great curse. It is a blight on man's spirit.

  • @danieljliversLXXXIX People outright prefer Judaism to Paganism. Never has God the Father showed more love for us as to when He sent us His Only Begotten Son to die for us, as a fullfillment of the Old Testament, redeeming mankind so we can live everyday in the faith as our Father in Faith, Abraham lived, in harmony with God, keeping the convenant between God and man, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour is the new and everlasting covenant between God and man.

  • Wagner, like most Europeans of his time, was an anti-semite. Highly unlikely he would have approved of the death camps though.

But what has any of this to do with the value of his music? He was a towering genius.

  • merci ou thank you

  • A wise man once said civilized people in social circles do not discuss religion, politics, and Wagner.

  • @DaneCookHater Heil!

  • Nazis Sucks

  • @Anarcomunist77 They do indeed. However Wagner is not a Nazi, and if you mean his anti-Semitism, Bakunin also had quite a few disappointing things to say about Jews.

  • @AndrewMann552 Everyone did in that era! Communism produced NO high art!!!

  • @ApocalypticDevotee Communism? Who mentioned Communism? Bakunin was an anarchist. Go get an education please, fascist piece of shit.

  • @AndrewMann552 Oh yes. let me "get an education." So I can talk profoundly like you. See what cultural marxism has done. I love you people. You make me laugh.. hah ha ha.

  • @ApocalypticDevotee Riiight. Thanks for proving my point. Fucking idiot fascist.

  • @ApocalypticDevotee Actually don't respond, I just looked at your page and you're some sort of strange lunatic.

  • @AndrewMann552 They don't suck; cultural Marxists do. (:

  • @Anarcomunist77 So do commies!!! They killed more people, actually.

  • @ApocalypticDevotee It is obvious that you identify with the Nazis, there is no valid argument to justify the extermination of part of humanity that only fools believe they are superior, communism never existed does not say crazy.

  • I loved the cuts where they showed the musicians more than the boring parts with the conductor :/

  • Until 2:27 was the part used in Inspector Morse's final chapter, when Lewis says good bye and then show a view of Oxford with a little fog. Brilliant ending and brilliant use of that particular part of Parsifal.

  • enjoy!!

  • Daniel Barenboim has campaigned to mellow anti german music feelings due to understandable situations during world war two. My father suffered terribly under the nazis rule and yet loved Wagner' music and in fact introduced me to it! music brings us all together!

  • No one describes the Pain of Life like he did.

  • Woh! It sounds really amazing. Lovely master piece... =)

  • when we will can hear it here on Israel?..

  • @FREIKORPS1919

Yeah.. The directors name is Barenboim? Doesn´t sound German really..

  • watch?v=-htrVviBfos

  • fantastic!

  • as a human being wagner was such an horrible man but as an artist was absolutely amazing..:)

  • @1pietrod

how do you know it ?

  • press 4 and 5 to see him punching himself

  • This is the first time I've ever heard any part of Parsifal. The opening is absolutely stunning!

  • @angryjalapeno

It is a tough call between this prelude and the Flying Dutchman!

  • I hope that this can be played at my funeral. Absolutely brilliant music.

No discussion of Wagner can happen without reference to anti-Semitism, unfortunately. Wagner was not a great man, but he made great music.

  • Christianity is founded on Judaism, and as a Christian who holds Israel and the Jewish people in the highest esteem, I feel the squabbling about this masterpiece is beneath contempt. Jesus lived his earthly life as a Jew.

I will check to be certain, but I believe both Wagner and his wife Cosima wanted Parsifal to be conducted in Bayreuth by Hermann Levy. The performance above, one of the finest interpretations I have ever heard, was conducted by Daniel Barenboim. Both men are Jews.

  • what is the orchestra playing?

  • w w w. hnk.hr/ en/ opera/ parsifal

  • ..."Il bel tacer non fu mai scritto"...

  • 17 Massad agents disliked this video.

  • Anybody know what orchestra / opera company Barenboim's conducting here?

I'm seeing this tomorrow at the ENO : )

  • Astounding music.

  • In search of Klingsor

  • von welchem jahr ist das eigendlich?

  • @amorphoma eigentlich aus dem Spätmittelalter

  • A paradox it is, but such beauty can come from a mind which may have harboured such hate for a section of humankind. That said, the music is just beautiful. I am a Jew and I too, hear and feel the beauty. You may have hated me and those like me, but there was great genius and beauty in your work, and for that, I thank you.

  • Wagner is genius.

  • Actually Wagner was far more dangerous than fictitious Archie Bunker. Wagner DID go beyond just mouthing anti-Semitism (consult his 'Judaism in Music' tract, and note his refusal to conduct Mendelssohn without wearing gloves (so he would not be 'infected' by Jewish music!). Also, Wagner's own nationalism would not permit any 'foreigners' or other sub-humans, which brings us right up to Nazi Germany. (HOWEVER, this should not disallow us from loving his music, Hitler notwithstanding.)

  • When I think of Paradise, I think to things as beautiful as this ouverture.

  • Hitler had excellent tastes

  • @oisaacsf Dear God...

  • Stunningly beautiful! Truly the work of a genius.

  • About "Parsifal" :

"Ce nom est arabe. Les anciens trouvères ne l'ont plus compris. 'Parsi' - 'fal' signifie parsi (pensez aux parsis, adorateurs du feu), pur ; fal : dit fou (fol), dans un sens élevé, c'est-à-dire homme sans érudition, mais de génie..." (Richard Wagner) - - Iranian words?

  • I feel my soul fly as a bird at this intro!

  • Who cares what jews think.

  • @claraque

    Was??

  • @twooffour Pseudointellektuelle Socke.

  • @claraque ach so

  • Faltou Ímpeto no final.

  • @Werner312 no It is an ancient pagan myth that christians stole. Osiris, Dionysus, have all died and risen before Christ "did". Stop trying to christianise everything of beauty. Go burn some innocent women....

  • @RyanVonFleming Haha,do you believe the Zeitgeist propaganda?? The idiot claimed things like Jesus was procalimed the son of God because of the ancient pagan belief that the son was a god, and therefore the similarity between the words son and sun. What this idiot doesn´t know it that this is a coincidence that just happens in english. Take Latin, where son is "filius" and sun is sol.

You atheists always make me laugh.

  • Parsifal is about the death on the cross by our Savior Jesus and his rising from the dead and offering us eternal life.

  • Just listen to the music like you are a virgin. No politics. No pre-conceived notions.

Wagner was a genius. I long for a universal genius who captures the human longing for love and perfection.

  • @jack60091

"Just listen to the music like you are a virgin."

I personally think it's about large dicks, but that's just my pre-conceived notion apparently...

  • @twooffour

You mean you have a small one??

  • @jack60091

Nobody can't be more close to truth than you.

  • "conducted by Barenboim" - yes - but which orchestra and when and where?

a little elementary information would be good

  • Only Wagner may open the doors of my spirit

  • @all: Stop discussing Wagner or the Nazis...

Just enjoy this masterpiece of music, please. There are few operas that can compete with this one, in my opinion.

  • While I acknowledge the destructive force Jewish collectivism has had on the west I'd be insincere and remiss not to mention I've come across a few Jewish people whom I've enjoyed their intellectual company.

If Jews were ever to "wake up" ,as a whole of course, and not view us in the antogonistic way they do now wouldn't that be a good thing for western development? When multiculturalism shows itself to be bad for Jews too they may wake up and align with us.Is that undesirable? Thanks.

  • aaarghhh stop talking about Hitler this is boring! Wagner isn't nazi you stupid kids. This is all what you know about his music?

  • @WujekLemisz He wasn't, but his wife was and he followed her.

To all other people: But is has nothing to do with his music. If Hitler loved Mozart, Mozart would get a lot of comments and concerts would be disturbed by jews with rattles. This is about music, not about who likes the composer so just listen and enjoy.

  • @Teasercop well, Wagner was a outspoken anti-Semite himself as you can read in "Judaism in Music" An Article he wrote in his time. But none the less I love Wagner. Great compositions. Hitler had great taste, hugo boss uniforms and wagner music!

  • @KaySwagFlexD

one of his conductors and friends was jewish.

  • @Teasercop Exactly.... I could not have said it better myself... ALL OF YOU JEWS NEED TO SHUT THE HELL UP AND LISTEN ATTENTIVELY!! BECAUSE THIS MUSIC WILL BE PLAYING ON THE DAY YOU MEET YOUR MAKER. SIEG HEIL! SIEG HEIL! SIEG HEIL!

  • @Gargantupimp Locker bleiben, Kamerad.
