For those without Firefox, keep in mind that every YT vid you watch already DOES download to your hard drive. That's what the faded-red progress bar ahead of the dark red play bar of the vid means. It is showing the download status. (Your computer plays YT vids off of your hard drive, not the YouTube servers)
It downloads to your Temporary Internet Files folder, so you can just copy and paste it to a different folder before going to a new vid page.
Firefox 3 uses ~20-75mb of ram, older versions have problems with memory leaks so they have a much larger memory footprint of ~60-800mb (yes eight hundred.), Firefox 3 is much more stable and secure also you might want to upgrade, there are a lot of advantages, if you don't like the new Theme i recommend this one: addons[.]mozilla[.]org/en-US/firefox/addon/364
If you want to use older Add-ons follow these instructions:
1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit enter.
2. Click the "Ill be careful, I promise!" Button
3. In the filter feild type "extensions.dta.version"
4. Double click on the only preference that is shown below.
5. A dialog box comes up asking you to enter a value (this is the version number Firefox uses to tell if Add-ons are out of date, change the value to 1.0.
thanks for that mr. theta, also, in safari, you can open the activity window and double click the largest file (the movie file itself). this loads a .flv to the desktop, which i then convert with isquint freeware

But it's an .flv and Firefox is much easier.

Yeah, SUPER is great.
There's also a "YouTube Downloader" (that's the name; just Google for it) that works pretty well.

I've had mixed results with this method. Sometimes it works, but a lot of times the video gets really screwed up with it.

hmmmm i dont see the download as an mp4 link

Here's my method for downloading YT vids.
This also works for most other websites!
2. Install the "Fast Video Download" Add-on.
1. Install the "DownThemAll!" Add-on.
3. Go to Tools/Add-ons, select "Fast Video Download" and click its "Options" button,
Check every box excluding "Put links into Flashgot".
Re-encoding Always leads to quality loss, you can use VLC media player to play .FLV files its 100% free (videolan[.]org/vlc).
Enjoy!
Any questions about Firefox then send me a PM.

Keepvid lets you download the file, I didn't specify that.

I use a Firefox plugin to download them in flv format, then I use "Power Video Converter" to convert them to a comfortable AVI or WMV.
