She was 62 years old - and had been singing Lucia for 29 years. What part of phenomenal is that not???? Ans as for Kraus - he was another miracle! And I thought that Kraus was also so sweet in the curtain call, kissing her hand. Not only was he a magnificent artist - but what a gentleman...and a romantic!
Somebody said they look tired????? I do not agree at all...Kraus is tops, his performance is nothing but great, we are talking about the "Maestro" and Sutherland does very well, nothing to be desired!!!!!
Sutherland does sound fresher here than in other parts of this performance, and the main reason is that she has the incomparable duet support of Kraus.
I totally disagree. Sutherland sounds surprisingly fresh, although the sound is a little thread-bare in places. The voice has verve and energy in it. She doesn't look or sound tired to me. Old voices are typically of one color....grey, and are without any trace of sweetness. Listen to her sound at 5:20 to 5:50.....the colors are a little faded, but still there. Kraus sounds older than Dame Joan here, but still sings well.

Definitivamente, Sutherland requiere subtítulos.

The portions I was referring to have little to do with Kraus. The tenor really isn't singing at this point....it's all Dame Joan.

I miscalculated a bit.....listen from 5:13 to 5:50.
