I hope that I'll never actually need to make one of these...but over the past few months, I've been giving some thought to what I might be able to do if this country ever suffered a serious catastrophe which temporarily or permanently disrupted a lot of the systems which we rely on and take for granted. Knowledge is power, after all...and one of the drawbacks of modern technology is the potential loss of simple survival skills which are completely independent of that technology.
Hi. Maybe a silly quesion but I really don't know. I'm just getting in to all of this so I really don't know: When you set the snare, how is the rabbit trapped? I don't mean the mechanism, I mean how is it baited etc? Or is it just random wondering over it by chance?
@FeralTyneMan he has a video on it, but basically you need to find a obvious path rabbits take and pick the narrowest spot in the trail and set it there
to the people asking what will work and what wont work.
any type of wire will probly work. it just has to be flexible and nothing the rabbit can chew threw. that being said you cant use string or yawn of any sort. cuz the rabbit can chew threw it....and the hole should be about as big around as your fist. remember the rabbits head goes threw the hole and it hangs the rabbit. (it does not catch it by the foot)
@greenbayalltheway22 i wouldent think it would. i mean it might if it strangles the rabbit doesnt chew much but your best bet would be to get some wire. you can go to a place like vip or walmart (if you go to the autoparts section) and basicaly what you wana look for is somthing called mechanics wire but its also known as bailing wire. its really cheap like maby 25 cents a roll at most and you could easily make 3 or 4 snares a roll.
This snare will work for squirrels, this is the main snare I use but I also like using a spring snare to keep the catch away from other predators.....happy hunting
one time i put one up at my cabbin and i got something i dont know whart it was but there were bear tracks and blood all over and it ate my thing i was pissed so now i go bear hunting all the time xD
Cool that helped me out a lot because I got lost In the woods and remembered this vid so I made the snare caught and skinned the bunny and then I cooked and ate it
I'm looking into groping rabbits to eat and I have used a trap but never snared I'm gunna try out snaring rut imprint of rabbit holes can anyone tell me if thats a good idea?
@gitterdun90 - Obviously you can't use fishing line... The fishing line would just gimp and the rabbit would get out. You use a metal wire so that once it is pulled tight, it retains the tightened shape, and the harder the rabbit pulls, the tighter it gets... fishing wire would just distract it for a few minutes.
Hey, im tryna get into this myself and have seen CARP wire in fishing shops and was wondering would it suffice? Its a 25lb line so was thinkn it would be strong enough for a rabbit surely..dont wanna try it till i know for sure tho
thnx 4 showing me this ! this is the easiest trap ive made today ! i have'nt tried it yet cuz the tree that i have is already set up, but i will try it toorrow !
@ZJRbabes You set it at a choke point where the rabbits go through, their head is smaller then the rest of the body so when they enter it acts as a neuse. With the wire they will twist themselves in it until they choke themselves to death.
good vid im in scotland and snares here are different to your kind do you think you could maybe send me a few dozen of those snares so i can try them out please? if so i could happily give you my address thanks a bunch
ethanellingsen, part of the beauty of using the string and setting these the way Northernpike56 does, it greatly increases your catch rate because the wire will lock before the rabbit really seems to panic.
You also dont need a swivel by using the string and the chances for a 20 gauge wire to fail on a thumper is pretty rare (i've never seen it). The string absorbs shock and twisting better than plain wire.
I think maybe you should just sit back, relax and learn.
good to hear that this works good, cuz i'm just a newbie. i'll be gettin me some snow hares this winter, i've never had rabbit stew but i'm lookin at a lot of good recipes online. what else is a good rabbit recipe besides stew?
@mdw6571 over complicated snare when all you need is the stainless wire tied to a stick on the side that is more stable and less likely to get"struck out"....there is also nothing touching the sides of the snare when set wire to tree so your less likely to get a pushed snare....and What are you talking about swivels for ..never seen one used for rabbits in my life..you cant walk 50 yards in the bush here without seeing a rabbit snare

Hey bro...I've caught countless bunnies over the years and never had one part or "bite right through the string" in fact I've never even heard tell of it...
I have heard tell of other animals doing that, and even chewing off their own limbs to free themselves....But not Rabbits!
On the other hand I have seen rabbits break too weak of wire...
why wont the thing just untighten as the rabbit moves around? i can see it clamping tight but whats to stop it from going back open - theres not slipnkot right?
why wont the thing just untighten as the rabbit moves around? i can see it clamping tight but whats to stop it from going back open - theres not slipnkot right?
because the rebbit's instict tells it to moeve away from it and so it wil try to get away and tighten. so simply said justb beacause rabbits are stupid
It's gonna get caught around it and it's hard to get a snare off of something without having hands. I know, I trap coyotes. And an animals instinct (when it is caught) is to run away from what ever's got a hold of it they're not gonna try to untangle it and slipt back out, they cut awful shines when they're caught. The other comment you got from this was a retard, rabbits are very smart.
Thanks for the vid. I've been trying to trap some nuisance muskrats under ice in a pond with no moving water and have struck out thus far. I have permission to snare to I'm going to try this snare under ice to make a barricade around their burrowing area. Cheaper to get a hundred snares in action than a hundred conibears.
HERE IS THE ANSWER TO ALL YOUR ?'S; Rabbits are not thinkers like us. When a rabbit feels the tightness of as snare it runs FORWARD trying to get away from whatever it feels is holding it. As it moves forward the snare tightens. Rabbits are not smart enough to back up, they panick.
ok..I LOOOVE to hunt and fish and all the out door stuff, i want to get into trapping im from New York and have alot of cotton tails on my property. i have a dumb question..please answer..if u set up a trap like this, lets say a rabbit walks threw it and the
"noose" slowly tightens..what keeps the wire from going back to the original size and releasing the rabbit. wont it open back up?
@northernpike56 Rabbits are stupid, they will keep trying to pull themselves free and it will continue to tighten the wire, even starting to cut the skin.
when im snaring wolves i use snare locks which means once that wire gets pulled it will not go back. i never found the need to use 1 for rabbits. They usally just run and and struggle forward until it kills them.
@JoeConEd one word:pressure. it's a slip knot, so long as pressure remains on the wire, the loop will constrict. a rabbit will move, hence maintain this constriction until it chokes and dies (rather quickly). from sheer panic, you can pretty well guarantee it will move ALOT. rabbits hop, they don't 'sneak' generally, so a noose will not 'slowly' tighten but rather abruptly
do the same thig but dont tie a string on it. make a bite in your wire (22. gage prefabley) twist it so you have a whole slip the other end of your wire through the whole and there you go find a good rabbit run then tie teh end to a tree sothe snare is over the run and leavit for the night Cold night and check it . if you guy want i can deffintly make a video.
@agher1 .......................dumbass thats why u use 21 inch long piece...once your done making the loop its small enough that the rabbit will get caught
i dont really understand this ive never made a rabit snare before i understand how the wire acts as a slipknot but what make u think the bunny will go through it? plz someone explaing i would like to make one
@utubedude911 you have to find a rabbit trail, and they're pretty easy to spot. rabbits never go to far from their warrens and 98% of the time use certain paths. just find one of these paths, set up your snare and ta-da! 1 lovely rabbit.
@VakDraco just had a thought. if u watch a rabbit on a run and figure out where he's gonna go, then go in behind him and set a snare, you could come back round the front and scare him - you know where he's gonna end up!
You place them on runs/paths that rabbits frequent. They get caught as they scurry along their trails. If you walk along a fence row where a grassy field borders woods, you'll find paths that rabbits have worn going back and forth. That's the kind of spot you're looking for.
rabbit season just started where i am at, i live on a private farm so i dont have to worry about small pets running around, would you be able to tie the string to a tree? i tired it to a fence last night and had a rabbit this morning. the good trails are in the woods deeper
It works after you tie the black string to a log about 2-4 inches off the ground. Bunny runs through and the wire part titens as the bunny is going through... I think you can imagen what hapepns from there.
animal goes thru trap catches as animal is going and slides like a noose ,animal struggles to get away ,animal gets strangled , animals naturally want to run forward to get away from hazzards or preds.
I'm 42 , by the time I was 12 , I had my own trap lines , some 100 traps were man made leg traps , I trapped muskrats for money, sometimes I caught a rabbit. my dad and I had other traps we used for fox and raccoons we made a lot of money. :- )
I highly doubt this thing could take down a wolverine, bear, bobcat, or lynx ( as desribed in description) considering they are big animals and snares are for small game
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why would you want to snare a rabbit? They are cute, affectionate, curious, and make the most adorable pet. Rabbits do not have a voice, but they certainly have personality and feelings. Find out more about their care and then try adopting one from the shelter and you will be amazed at how much you can actually love them.
my local hardware store doesnt have that wire, could you post me a link to a website that i can buy 20 gauge stainless steel, brass or copper that could be used to make a good snare?
I hope that I'll never actually need to make one of these...but over the past few months, I've been giving some thought to what I might be able to do if this country ever suffered a serious catastrophe which temporarily or permanently disrupted a lot of the systems which we rely on and take for granted. if i make a snare like this and just stake it in the the groung, what keeps the snare from losening after a raccoon or watever gets caught in it?
smkeryday 2 years ago
someone plz tell me how this trap works?
huntedbadly 2 years ago
It works after you tie the black string to a log about 2-4 inches off the ground. Bunny runs through and the wire part titens as the bunny is going through... I think you can imagen what hapepns from there.
owned4thewin 2 years ago
they run through it and it gets caught around their neck...when the try to run away from it the slip loop slides down the wire strangling the animal
lavid2006 2 years ago
animal goes thru trap catches as animal is going and slides like a noose ,animal struggles to get away ,animal gets strangled , animals naturally want to run forward to get away from hazzards or preds.

xXx00SLATERBOY00xXx 2 years ago
Im using 20 gauge stainless steel wire...If you want to keep them alive I suggest using a live cage trap.
northernpike56 2 years ago
thanks man cant get a cage im 14 but my strict ass dad bet me £100 i couldent catch one so cool.
im from England so theres not a canadian hardwre store lol, but we get the same rabbits over here so thanks.

I'm 42 , by the time I was 12 , I had my own trap lines , some 100 traps were man made leg traps , I trapped muskrats for money, sometimes I caught a rabbit. my dad and I had other traps we used for fox and raccoons we made a lot of money. :- )

Renerldrealmshandris 2 years ago
i have a question how long do your snare take before you catch a rabbit
j0ehellm0n 2 years ago
hey man. your the first pep i ever talked to lol. dude whates twine and where do u get?
xXx00SLATERBOY00xXx 2 years ago
um got to a hardware store for wire or twine but twine was more handy at the time so thats why i used it
j0ehellm0n 2 years ago
Good question but a hard one to answer...so many variables at play.
Depends on how many rabbits there are, where and how you place your snare, the materials used, ect.
northernpike56 2 years ago
i made a completly twine one i hope i catch me self a bunny if i do im subing
j0ehellm0n 2 years ago
I highly doubt this thing could take down a wolverine, bear, bobcat, or lynx ( as desribed in description) considering they are big animals and snares are for small game
baconator490 2 years ago
Use a heavy enough guage wire (cable) and it sure would...
northernpike56 2 years ago
if i use a zip tie?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
why would you want to snare a rabbit? They are cute, affectionate, curious, and make the most adorable pet. Rabbits do not have a voice, but they certainly have personality and feelings. Find out more about their care and then try adopting one from the shelter and you will be amazed at how much you can actually love them.

are u a vegetarian ? Just curious
rondeau9840 2 years ago
my local hardware store doesnt have that wire, could you post me a link to a website that i can buy 20 gauge stainless steel, brass or copper that could be used to make a good snare?

It's so simple, I feel dumb now for trying to make one without help a month back and having it utterly fail.
bdbrimm 2 years ago 2
i prefer a 1200fps pellet gun, they even do backflips when you hit them in the head

Thanks for this video dude. Me and some friends are planning a week away in the woods and these snares look like they could come in handy.
The music is awesome. \\m// (-_-) \\m//
