@TrustMePansy11 its called vibrato, and its an often used technique by opera/musical singers. It may sound weird, but its used to give more Volume to the voice. Josh has a lung big enough to deny this technique^^ (sry for bad english, im not a native speaker ;) )

@itbejess Michael Ball was the second Raoul after Steve left the show after coming to the States. Michael ended up in the cast in 1987. The musical came out in 85', and the recording was done in 86', with Steve still being Raoul.

I think they are both great. If some of you knew your facts, you'd know that Sarah Brightman was the original Christine in the Phantom of the Opera that opened in 1985. It's great because of her. Josh did a really good job, I'm a huge Josh fan, but it's weird to hear anyone but Steve Barton singing Raoul's part, since I grew up listening to the original soundtrack.

Ok, to those who are dissing Sarah Brightman: I hope you realize the role of Christine was written just for her. Show a little respect for her talent. Just because you don't like her style doesn't mean she's not an amazing singer. If you think about she's brilliant and unique. This version sounds a little heavier than other renditions I've heard from her, but she still sounds great. I'll always like best when she sang it with Cliff Richard. :)

I loved all the wonderful music critics that came out to comment on Sarah Brightman's singing. She's been singing professionally since little Josh was having his nose wiped by his mommy. If she's "trying too hard" in this song, it's that she's trying not to outshine Josh too much. Unfortunately for Josh, it doesn't work... while he is a good singer, he doesn't have what it takes to grasp the essence of this song. Sarah, on the other hand, IS this song... Sarah was the original Christine.
