@MartenFerret absolutely, and if im not mistaken at least two championships in the 80's with Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison (back to back I believe). The Buick Regal/Grand National design of the 80s was a great design that reflected the attitude of Buick at the time (performance enhanced by modest luxury). After the aerowars though, Buicks design was AWFUL for NASCAR (Oldsmobile had a similar fate, though the Cutlass Delta 88 didnt have as many aero-unfriendly characteristics.)
@TheCougarFrom1983 Unlike todays boys, these are MEN who can handle the extra 10 feet of racetrack. Richard's move was bold, but it worked. I guess today's stock car drivers aren't capable of making such moves without crashing. At least that's what NA$CAR implied with that rule.
@FrodothePuppet I believe it has a lot to do with respect. Drivers would make some very ballsy movesback then, but they had respect for each other and the real danger they all faced with their profession. They wanted to win, and they wanted revenge when it was called for, but they would bide their time and do it when it would only cost a driver position and not injury. Todays drivers dont have nearly the amount of respect for their profession as these men did.
I'd always heard that The King pulled off an awesome move to finish second in this race, but I'd never seen it. That move was nothing short of amazing. His career may have dwindled in the last few years, but Richard NEVER lost the ability to get it done at Daytona.
They need to have similar designs to these cars but larger spoilers and we'd have a winner!

What god-awful design engineering by Buick. That flat nose is an aero-nightmare. Its almost straight up and down.

Sammy Swindell tore up 2 cars in Speedweeks. Now do you wonder why they fired him?

He still had it, there are just courses that suit drivers well and this is one that suits King Richard Petty.
