His music, particularly this piece and The Deer's Cry, are the sounds of a soul whether saint or sinner, adoring, worshipping, crying out and praying. Mercy and love, sorrow and joy.
This is magnificent. I love the fast pace of this (I've heard it even faster, which is even better). I think I personally like this slightly more than Tabula Rasa, what do you think?
I'm polish...now i sitting in chair and listening this...and I cry.I closed my eyes and just ...that feeling is the most wonderful that could be..sorry but my english it;s not good, but it's no important..I just want to say... That music and the artist ..they from of God. that's all.
I just saw this performed tonight with solo violin and piano accompanist. The violinist performed the false harmonics at the end flawlessly... they were ammaaaazing and better (more emotional?) than this recording.... :O
@firestarter113 True. I was playing this loud in the living room once and my mother told me to turn it down because she thought it sounded horrible...and I yelled at her O.O Sorry mommy, but Arvo Part rocks.
@Vanzetti1936 My friend arranged this piece for Classical Guitar and Violin. He plays the guitar in the video. Look for Marek Pasieczny Arvo Part. Trying to not be biased, it's actually one of the best I've heard. Amazing effect given the volume capacity of the classical guitar.
The first time I heard this a concert I thought it was tragic and beautiful for the first two minutes before it got increasingly dull. By the end of it, I was actually GLAD it was over.
I blame the musical director - who actually presented this WITHOUT the violin solo. What a huge difference it makes! THIS is how it should be performed.
This interpretation of this peice is my absolute favorite. Gil is an amazing artist , I can't wait to see him do Pictures At An Exhibition in NY in June!
the beginning reminds me of the lost woods soundtrack in "a link to the past" when he's going for the master sword haha think it's a timbre thing more than the progression
This beautiful piece sounds ecclesiastical but it is not though it does evoke an atmosphere of meditative spirituality. I read that over the years the composer has continued to create different renditions of the work, which now total 15 distinct scorings. I've just heard the Saint Louis Symphony give a sublime performance this work.
'Fratres' has always held me deeply in its resonance, and I am left to reflect on lost friends. Arvo Part's genius makes me believe again in 'the music of what happens'.
I just returned from a concert with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra playing this - had to find it - and this is such a great recording to find. Many thanks.
@burningempire666, even the waltz resurrects once in a while. And so? Listen, if you decibel freaks want to hear something really heavy, look for Coltrane's "Om", "The Great Concert of Cecil Taylor", "The Helliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra" vols. 1 & 2, Albert Ayler's "Ghosts", or Julius Hemphill's "Dogon A.D" and "Coon Bid'ness". Then we'll talk.
Of course I'm mad, @mutinyinheav3n, and happy to make you laugh, but, did you hear the music the I've recomended two weeks ago? I want to hear your opinion on that.
@Neopachuco I've listened to the first three recommendations and I have to say it's not really cut out for me. If it's the 'decibel freaks' you've directed it at, I can see a bit of similarity with heavy metal, though I dislike that kind of music.
I play classical music at loud colume aswell, for if I had to say music is like a drug to me, I like to overdose.
In my opinion I think you should leave them thinking their taste is better and just be content with your own taste in music.
@kankerknakker, I see your point and think you're right. About taste, in music or elsewhere, you can't reach an agreement. About my recomendations to the decibel freaks, I had the intention to make them "see" that to create really far-out music you don't have to do it by way of volume (decibels) but of structure, harmonics and intensity. On the other hand, I see that you are a classical kind of guy and not really into avant-garde music. That's fine with me.
Both, Arvo Pärt and often eaven Heavy Metal are serious music. This is why you like this music. They are both speaking abut Spirituality. BUT! Arvo Pärts music contains a spirituality which comes from heaven and often Heay Metal contains a spirituality which comes from hell. I'm serious.

@Zinoberblau This is my decision: this has to be the most stupid "argument" on youtube. This was never meant to be taken seriously. If people keep on commenting on this heavy metal vs. whatever shit, I'm afraid I'll have to delete and block. Get a sense of humor.
@Zinoberblau Wow just when I thought I ceased to be amazed by the stupidity of youtube comments I read yours. The connection you're making would look absurd to even a 10-year-old. What I can say for sure is that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. GG.

aaaarghh! Can't take it anymore. This version speaks the most to me ON UTUBE,BUT i have to upload the version i have. Not only the one I like the most, perfect playing,no heavy timing mistakes on intro, amazing piano, all breathes naturally, but also amazing recording technique!!! Worst part is I never found out who plays it cause I got it as a gift from a stranger on minidisc and saved it as an mp3...aaaargh!!! so frustrating to see nobody has it utube!! listening to it over ur video & GOOSEBUMPS!!
Holds a special attraction for me... not only because it is beautifully written... but because in it I hear a distinct bridge to all the the other genres. The low pianos, the thundering cadences, the dramatic STRINGS.... they simply make a statement as much as a scream in your face. It makes me wonder how every modern and classical artist has taken a bit of inspiration from people like Arvo Part and Beethoven... Making particularly intense moments to drop and then completely devour them.
I'm not familiar with the Repin recording, but Shaham does deliver. In the liner notes he explains his relation to Part's music--quite interesting and touching.

I can do both, but that would repeat the ugliness of orange theme?
I personally imagine pipe-organ version, but there is no such dynamic as the violin can present.
Of course the crescendo pedal and digital manipulation can complete the mission.
