Actually I'm doing a 2A3 PSE with a 2.5K OPT......I'm still debating to go with the Edcor OPT or suck it up & go with the Plitron toroidal. Having a custom wound OPT is no big deal, Jack at Electraprint will wind to your own spec. So will SP Wound in the UK. I have spent a dozen or so man hours so far just on the chassis with a hundred more to go. The cheap $29.99 chassis shown here ain't nothin to shout about. The two dollar Chinese sockets don't inspire me either.
Amazing the people that make a hobby of trying to spot every possible deviation from "best practice". Cool video, good to see some homebuilding going on.
wow the way you guys talk this thing is dangerous?. prob is with those hiVoltage tubes... if it is..then this guy should stop doing it this sloppy way even if he has for years. accidents happen when you least expect.
Watched this because I am thinking about building a guitar amp and - although I know very little about electronics - was surprised at what seemed to me very careless practice.
More errors...he is propping up the chassis with an empty tube box, not too sturdy, granted the Transformer is nearly holding the whole chassis itself. he is handling the tubes without gloves (Cleanliness) on occasion he is touching the chassis itself with the 'negative' hand removing one barrier to shock.
Its doesn't hurt a thing to touch a tube with your bare hands. Its just a stupid myth that is around because of halogen bulbs. Halogen lights run at high temps through thin glass. If you touch it, there will be oils from your hand left behind, and when it gets hot, because of those oils, the glass in the spot you touched expands slower than the rest. Tubes don't get this hot. If they did then just the writing on the tube would cause it to burst. Its perfectly fine to touch a tube.
Partly true, the quartz devitrifies where the fingermarks are, looks bad but damage is considered cosmetic. However in general things are better not contaminated if it can be avoided. On some specialist tubes/valves fingermarks and similar can promote surface flashovers on ceramic.
Yep, transformer holding the chasis well. Nothing wrong with touching tubes without gloves. Been doing it for 15 years now, and not once has there been a tech issue or even a cosmetic issue with it. Of course you don't want to touch a hot tube with your bare hands. There will be no shock as he is not a moron and does not have any juice running through the circuit. The caps have never been charged. Duh!
High voltage protocols are not being adhered to, His negative probe is crudely poked thru the chassis allowing it to pivot on its own(pivoting to ???)Need an alligator clamp. The leads are held with both hands, one negative the other positive..if just one lead "breaks thru" a path straight across the heart!
been trying to build one of these mothers for years, can't finish it and I have tons of valves.

lol @ RichardEllisxyz Yes, Steve really lives on the edge. Have fun finding output transformers that sound as good as Decware OEM.

i dont believe in using output manufactured transformers! i build them myself!
btown2011 2 years ago
These output transformers are specially wound just for decware amplifiers.

no its not its a very true myth only because i have had tubes brake in my hands.

its not the tube cleanliness that bother's me, it's tubes can brake very easy!

Again, only an idiot would work on an electric circuit while it was juiced up. Which is obviously not the case here.
