Mikael's voice has to be probably the most unique voice in the metal genre. He can display a vast array of emotions from death metal growls to stuff like this. Just wow.
I know this song thanks to opeth, but in my opinion the original by DP is quite a bit better. The Opeth version sounds a bit too... stylized or something, even a bit 'cheap' perhaps. For Opeth this is probably musically the worst song they have in their reportoire.
This is ONE of the FEW songs that I have to say...is better than the original. Don't get me wrong, Deep Purple's original is incredible, but Opeth's sound just fits this song so perfectly. Absolutely beautiful. Opeth never seems to disappoint me.

I think this version is better. It isn't as melancholic or depressing as the other one, in my opinion, but I like this one better because it's tighter... and maybe because it's Åkerfeldt singing :)

The original is way better, because Coverdale totally nailed the vocals. He was just perfect. Really, there's no point of covering songs like SoF unless you heavily change the arrangement, i.e. Ensiferum's cover of Lady in Black.
I'm trying to compare every aspect of there music to eternal tears of sorrow's music, but none of Opeths intro's or solos are worthy of competing against eternal tears of sorrow
Eternal Tears of Sorrow is awesome, I love them, but you can't compare them to Opeth. They're 2 different bands. They're both awesome in their own style of playing.
Mikael's voice is not perfect indeed, but he's still a very good singer. His voice is definitely not plain, let alone emotionless... Many people like Mikael's voice because of the emotion he puts into any song he sings. And he definitely doesn't sound like a novice. He's done better than this, true, but it's not bad, and definitely not novice.
As for the guitars, I can't say they're that bad... I like listening to them.
I don't know which version I like best. I really like both of them.
Its great to see a Progressive Metal band covers a Deep Purple song,Opeth and Deep Purple,both are awesome,but I like Deep Purple a little bit more...
@tehpwningdude I'm not a fan of Black Majesty, but yes, at least they did something different with their cover, and it's very good. While I like Opeth, this is just a pale carbon copy lacking the passion of Blackmore and Coverdale's original. It's an ok cover sure, but these Opeth fanbois that say how much better it is than the original are funny. Blind stupidity at it's finest. Anyway, cool that Opeth are fans, they're a good band doing strong original material.

I'm trying to compare every aspect of there music to eternal tears of sorrow's music, but none of Opeths intro's or solos are worthy of competing against eternal tears of sorrow

Eternal Tears of Sorrow is awesome, I love them, but you can't compare them to Opeth. They're 2 different bands. They're both awesome in their own style of playing.

I cant believe that there are so much people that ACTUALLY think THIS is BETTER than DEEP PURPLE'S one.
The voice - is plain, emotionless, and so much imperfect, that compared to Coverdale's he sounds like a novice.
second - guitars and everything else... way to go... way to gooo...
Deep Purple forever, nice cover, but compared to the original... poor...

Mikael's voice is not perfect indeed, but he's still a very good singer. His voice is definitely not plain, let alone emotionless... Many people like Mikael's voice because of the emotion he puts into any song he sings. And he definitely doesn't sound like a novice. He's done better than this, true, but it's not bad, and definitely not novice.
As for the guitars, I can't say they're that bad... I like listening to them.
I don't know which version I like best. I really like both of them.

@tehpwningdude I'm not a fan of Black Majesty, but yes, at least they did something different with their cover, and it's very good. While I like Opeth, this is just a pale carbon copy lacking the passion of Blackmore and Coverdale's original. It's an ok cover sure, but these Opeth fanbois that say how much better it is than the original are funny. Blind stupidity at it's finest. Anyway, cool that Opeth are fans, they're a good band doing strong original material.

I like both this version and the original, i,m a great DP fan, but Opeth is also in my top 10 ;) .
But do remember if DP never came with this song, Opeth never came up with this great cover.
