I believe the newer BN SD40-2 units had strobe ditvhlights because I remember seeing a BN train from the early 1990s and it had strobes.

Have seen that locomotive in Diboll, Texas a few times heading for Houston on the UP Lufkin Sub last I heard it was stationed at Silsbee Texas as a swithcher

It was so funny that BN spent so much time and money putting strobes on motors, only to have ditch lights mandated and they had to redo all their units with new lights AGAIN!

BN did have Strobe Ditch Lights on SD40-2's and the BN-1 F-unit at Illinois Railway Museum Has Strobe Ditch Lights

Amtrak has flashing ditchlights, which I think flash for a few seconds after the horn has sounded. Other than that, however, I think they just stay on steady. Most other railroads have steady ditchlights; at least in the past, strobelights were used on top to help people see the train better and get out of the way if they were on the track (probably by resembling emergency lights on police cars and fire trucks). I believe Amtrak's strobes only flash when the bell is ringing.

actually I think it would be cheaper with strobes. But they would get irritating after while. Those flashing ditchlights that NS and CSX have, gives me headaches sometimes.
