  • That stirs something deep inside

  • Just found these guys on bbc fantastic

  • 7 people missed the like button

  • and where the hell do I buy an album of these guys?????

  • Sooo much better than the awful orchestrated version on their new album.

  • Gives the Welsh a run for their money.

    Great bass voices.

  • Can't this out of my head now.

  • the original roots and earliest written copy (1888) is from the clippers working out the tyne and the tees, although, as with any song credited as anon./trad, it's roots are deep and multifarious.

  • I was there, it was a brilliant concert and this was by far the highlight !

  • I saw Show Of Hands live and Fishermans Friends. All brilliant :D

  • The nature of sea shanties kind of means you can't say they come from one place. Maybe it's just me but something about the song suggests it might even have involved an Australian at some point in its development.

  • I know these guys have a record deal ny idea when the album is cuming out

  • I know these guys have a record deal ny idea when the album is cuming out

  • that was fantastic .... thanks for the post

  • Its funny how folks think that this song has anything to do with the state of South Australia in the early days the song refers to the whole of the southern part of the Australian continant not just one state

  • Stan Hugill's smilin'!

  • So after seeing the Fishermen's Friends on the local BBC show I thought I'd have a cast about for some footage... here they are performing with one of my most favourite bands ever, Show of Hands. Talk about a match made in heaven. Cracking stuff. More Please :)

  • Heard this on Five Live about 5 times overnight, had to youtube it as soon as I got to a computer. Great stuff.

  • Saw these guys at Abbotsbury....they are truly amazing and for once it didn;t rain!!

  • THIS is what a Shanty SHOULD sound like! BRAVO! Get thee to Alaska!

  • awesome ,but i still prefer the pouges version

  • Proper 'Ansum!

  • This is the best rendition of this great shanty that I have heard. Looking forward to viewing other videos on Fishermans Friends.

  • @Toiler280, Very correct, most groups sing this MUCH too fast. Historically and MUSICALLY this tempo works much bettere.

  • I cant stop listening to this. it is awesome!

  • sick shit bruva, keep up the tunes!

  • I first saw Fishermans Friends at Abbotsbury this year as a support for the Show of Hands (they sang this shanty too). When my friend said we'd be watching a bunch of fisherman singing sea shanties I had my reservations. But as you can see....these guys are absolutely stunning to listen to and you end up singing along with them. Fantastic.

  • Love this. Best version yet.

  • These blokes are good...very good....very very good. They are great!

  • My troop is gona sing this song at the end of the reckrutt school. Gona bee amezing funn!

  • for some reoson this version reminds me of a bunch of pirates singing on a ship during a journey, only thing that would be missing for that would be missing would be an accordian, excellent version of this song though!

  • well theyre from the celtic county of cornwall, famous for their pirates, infact i'd imagine thats were the stereotypical pirate accent comes from.

  • Very good!

I came here through a link on wikipedia :-)

  • A very stiring and well arranged version.

However, I still prefer the Pogues take.

Can you ever imagine any of these blokes on a prison ship?

It is like they are off for a holiday in the sun!,not for a life of confusion, delusion, destitution, degregation, prositution, obfuscation and execution, far far away from home.

  • prison ship???

I thought it was just about some lads fishing for a living.

You enlighten me once again ;)

  • There was no transportation of convicts to South Australia - so it is not a prison ship. Nor is the song about fishermen - that is is the name of the group. The song is a sea shanty sung by sailors on the sailing ships that went between South Australia and Britain.

Nice version of a great song!

  • It is indeed. Settled by the free settlers. Great song. Love South Australia

  • i sing this all the time with my crew.

and listening to them really does give me goosebumps. it sounds amazing.

  • gives ya goosebumps its all good

  • this is what i as talking about jimboy

  • i love it when its sang like this... not bad for a bunch of brits lol.....

  • Port Isaac.......where the tv series Doc Martin is filmed

  • The whoops and hollers totally make this song.

  • great vid, might i ask who are the first two guys on? hellofa good version this one!

  • The one that does all the talking: Steve Knightly

    and the other: Phil Beer

    The Show of Hands Duo!

  • Is the choir from Cornwall or Portsmouth, or someplace like that? Can you add that to your video description?

  • Yes there are from Port Issac in Cornwall, England.

  • Wonderful!

  • Tis the auld songs lead us home!!!1

  • well done my lovlies!

Stu the brummie and family will always call Looe our home!

  • South Australia is a sea shanty used by the wool traders who worked the clipper ships between Australian ports and London. It is now a very famous folk song that is recorded by many artists and is present in many of today's song books.

This is well known as a farewell song, sung at the docks as the big ships were leaving. The men grew a sentimental attachment to the song and were even known to request a rousing chorus on their death beds, so that they could die happy. - Hope this helps!!!

  • i thought this was a irish folk song i remeber learning it in school in ireland in the 80s

  • nope its a cornish one until proven otherwise

  • cool interesting how things travel i stand corrected

  • While growing up in South Australia - we were taught this is an a song that the Irish settlers sung about South Australia.

  • You would be amazed at the amount of groups like this in Cornwall. Every pub on a Friday night , just about everyone sings these old traditional songs. It's so awesome.

  • dbadagna....You mean South West Britain!

Cornwall is NEXT to England like Wales!

    Brilliant sound eh?

  • Until Cornwall has border control and i get my passport stamped entering and leaving then Cornwall remains part of Britain.

  • Who needs backing music with voices like this.....Thanks for the post. Have they recorded a CD?

  • Good group ^^

  • The singing group is from Cornwall (southwest England). They're excellent!
