the original roots and earliest written copy (1888) is from the clippers working out the tyne and the tees, although, as with any song credited as anon./trad, it's roots are deep and multifarious.
The nature of sea shanties kind of means you can't say they come from one place. Maybe it's just me but something about the song suggests it might even have involved an Australian at some point in its development.
Its funny how folks think that this song has anything to do with the state of South Australia in the early days the song refers to the whole of the southern part of the Australian continant not just one state
So after seeing the Fishermen's Friends on the local BBC show I thought I'd have a cast about for some footage... here they are performing with one of my most favourite bands ever, Show of Hands. Talk about a match made in heaven. Cracking stuff. More Please :)
I first saw Fishermans Friends at Abbotsbury this year as a support for the Show of Hands (they sang this shanty too). When my friend said we'd be watching a bunch of fisherman singing sea shanties I had my reservations. But as you can see....these guys are absolutely stunning to listen to and you end up singing along with them. Fantastic.
for some reoson this version reminds me of a bunch of pirates singing on a ship during a journey, only thing that would be missing for that would be missing would be an accordian, excellent version of this song though!
Can you ever imagine any of these blokes on a prison ship?
It is like they are off for a holiday in the sun!,not for a life of confusion, delusion, destitution, degregation, prositution, obfuscation and execution, far far away from home.
There was no transportation of convicts to South Australia - so it is not a prison ship. Nor is the song about fishermen - that is is the name of the group. The song is a sea shanty sung by sailors on the sailing ships that went between South Australia and Britain.
South Australia is a sea shanty used by the wool traders who worked the clipper ships between Australian ports and London. It is now a very famous folk song that is recorded by many artists and is present in many of today's song books.
This is well known as a farewell song, sung at the docks as the big ships were leaving. The men grew a sentimental attachment to the song and were even known to request a rousing chorus on their death beds, so that they could die happy. - Hope this helps!!!

You would be amazed at the amount of groups like this in Cornwall. Every pub on a Friday night , just about everyone sings these old traditional songs. It's so awesome.
