I have played bass for years and between what I have used for amplification as well as others I know - this shit makes no sense. All of the "music" is synthesized noise that in reality is just a bunch of extremely low frequency signals meant to make the voice coil travel and make a flapping sound. I don't know if one of those mega watt speakers could take the low B string of a bass through an SVT 300w amp. I am talking tube power and not solid state.

Its funny how many people argue about name brands. IMO, you can make any thing sound good. It all depends on the preference of that individual. Ive seen Alumapro Alchemy subs sound waaayyyy better then JL's, (in terms of quality) not saying that JL sucks...it all depends on how you set up everything. and yes there are subs out there that can punish but then again he/she designed it for that reason, and here some peeps design der system base around quality..like for jazz and rock.

@IcyDeath91 Wrong actually it depends on all the aspects of your setup. You are basically saying that just because you have a nice box means it will sound good and honestly that is not the case. If a subwoofer can't handle the frequencies well or keep up with the music then it's gonna sound bad. Yes the box plays a major roll in the overall quality but it isn't the complete deciding factor.

You're retarded. SPL isn't dependent on the subwoofer manufacturer. It's dependent on the interior volume of the vehicle, the enclosure design and tuning (if ported), parasitic loss of volume, system tuning, amplifier power, subwoofer size, efficiency, and design, amount of subwoofers, and other various factors. So don't be such a fucking troll. There's a reason JL is one of the best car audio manufacturers in the world.

@320bit because its one of the cheapest to buy is why its used. its good but not as good as other materials you can use, if you check, most factory build sub enclosures is hardboard not mdf, mdf is DIY material. Plywood is good for sub enclosures, anything hard with the correct type of wadding. you should see the research that goes into bose sub woofers and the intricate design to get the best sound out of them. its insane! lol all were doing is making a box and cutting a hole :D

Lets just say, common sense tells you plywood is HORRIBLE to use and I can tell you first hand unless you reinforce it seriously, any powerful subwoofer will crack it or even break it completely. MDF is very strong stuff. Iv heard of people using carbon fiber to make subwoofer enclosures...now that might be something to look into.

@320bit ah true, i was thinking of my 6" subs... the point is to use the most dense material. carbon fibre would be good to use, what sort of carbon are you on about? theres lots of different ones, i would love a carbon sub enclosure :D now thats an idea for something i could make at work :) AND i dont think plywood would crack. if you use 18mm ply itll take it no probs. Just use battons inside to skrew to...like in most hard board enclosures. In this video i bet he has air leaks all round it.

@johnnyboy2459 1" thick medium density fiberboard is about as good as it gets next to HDF which is hard to find and probably alot more expensive. Point actually is that MDF is the most common material not because it is cheap but because it is durable and strong and has a low resonating factor making it ideal for speakers.
