Part 2 or 2 MSR also uses ceramic filters. I ended up getting a PUR Scout. Katadyn eventually bought PUR (sold the Scout as the Guide). PUR used iodine in one of the stages and claimed it killed viruses. I know of no filter that claims that now.
Part 1 or 2 First let me commend you on a very through review. I am going to date myself as you did in your John Wayne opener review. Back in 1998 when I lived in Idaho I was anxious about getting caught in the winter in the mountains. A family died less than 3 miles from a road the year before. One of the reasons I did not get Katadyn's Pocket for my emergency car kit was the ceramic filter. I believe some people in Alaska had had problems with ceramic filters cracking.
@ServingSamuel The activated carbon will filter out some chemicals, but it's best to contact the Katadyn customer support via their website email or 1-800 number.
@4thechozen I use a sanitizing solution...same ratio listed on the EPA site to purify water. I have the link to the EPA sheet in the information section on my 'Your Greatest Need..." video.
@BlackCatSaloon my pocket micro filter smells moldy ..even after taking it apart and cleaning it ...how do it get rid of the smelly funk ? i tryed smerging it in bleach and water purication pills ...?? is that normal for it to smell of old surplus gear ?
i'd like to see you have someone check the water out by using a microscope. it would be a good idea. i really like this product. i haven't tried it yet, but it sure looks great. thx for sharing your video.
If you are pressed and need to use the filter in deep cold, dissolve a bunch of salt into water (as much as you can) and run that through the filter. That will mitigate (but not eliminate) the risk of freezing. The only thing here is to remember to flush the salt water out. the salt can dry out and crystallize and cause problems, also, you don't want to drink brine.
(I would also check the instructions to see if they have warnings about salt possibly damaging the filter)
@shootingnerd Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I called their customer support folks and they suggest keeping the filter close to your body to prevent freezing during winter usage. At night, they suggested placing it in your sleeping bag with you...after you drain the water of course. :-)
Another concern with the salt is that it may clog or shorten the life of the filter, so as you suggested it would be a good idea to contact their support group.
Excellent review on a excellent product. I bought my Pocket Filter in 1984 and It's still going strong (I have purchased a new filter element which fit perfectly in the housing).
In very cold weather, If you keep this filter as warm as you would your sweetheart, you'll have no problems!
Yup, that's what I was using. I actually modified the camel back tube, and took the adapter off the filter. Now the water filters into the camel bak. It was the camel bak that had issues. The katadyn pocket is flawless.
I've used my pocket filter and it's my favorite. I do use coffee filters for the initial stage filtration. Works like a bute! I thought I got a nice camel back that I could connect to the water filter and then just leave the bladder in my backpack while I filter water, but the camel back connection isn't air tight, so all the water pours out of the connection. anyone know of a water bladder that will connect to the filter's port air tight?
Since NO personal backpacking water filter removes viruses, I HIGHLY suggest adding the MSR MIOX to your filter kit. I am putting together the Katadyn Pocket filter and the MSR MIOXX, which BTW also kills VX Nerve agent, among other chemical weapon formulations. The MSR MIOX is used by the Dept. of Defense for a reason.
It's actually very usable even in the winter, you just have to take some extra steps to protect the filter. When you're done pumping water, continue pumping the filter for about 30 seconds to make sure all the water has passed through the filter. Also, slide the whole unit into your sleeping bag with you at night, which it keep it warm enough to avoid freezing. I've done multiple winter camps with mine with no problems.
@BlackCatSaloon i have this filter ...make sure you dont let it freeze ..i called them they said the ceramic filter mite crack if is not dry...that you need to keep it close to your body it keep it warm in below zero temps
1) How long has the newest version of this filter been around? I don't want to buy one of these "on sale" only to find that it is some older, obsolete version of this.
2) Could you use a paper coffee filter as a good prefilter to the prefilter?
@BfSkinnerPunk Probably best to check with the manufacturer via email or their support number at katadyn.com. Yes, a paper filter may work too but I’m not sure if it would hold up like cheesecloth.
Hi, thanks for your brilliant explanation. Special that you told that the filter can break if it freezes. I'm waiting for your next practical explanation. Greatings Bushman
@shuzzbutts Freezing temperatures for ANY water filter is going to be problematic. Ice crystals will form and potentially block any type of filter medium. With the Pocket, I pointed this out because the ceramic element – which is expensive to replace – could possibly crack. So with the Pocket, you’ll just need to exercise more discretion in extremely cold environments.
keep it in your inside jacket pocket-

I always pre-filter my pre-filter. Good advice.

Oh and coffee filters work as a pre filter.

This will not work for saltwater.
Options for saltwater are usually more expensive.

disposable coffee filters (instead of the cheesecloth) surrounding the intake also work well for pre-filtering.
