@clearly. I remember seeing this film for the first time on my 12th birthday and reading the TV listings with all those famous actors. That turns out to be the films undoing. It is said this flop caused the end of Hollywood Biblical epics. Jesus of Nazareth parts 1 - 4 did a much better job.

I took me ages to find this John Wayne clip because I'd forgotten which movie it was from. I'm not religious at all but I liked a good Biblical drama. The robe was the first movie in cinemascope, did you know that?

@clearly I sure did. I'm a nerd when it comes to biblical epics. I saw a DVD version of the Robe where the producer Frank Ross was boasting about this in a trailer. I think the biblical epic will make a come back one day, just like Westerns and Superhero films, but please no all star casts!

Two more glaring "problems" with this movie: according to the Scriptures, Judas hangs himself - not by self-immolation and in Roman times, the wrist considered part of the hand. As in crucifixtion, a [human] body's weight would cause the palm's flesh to tear just before the body fell from the nails; but if the nails were driven between the radius & the ulna, then the body would hang for several days. Read "The Case For Christ" by Lee Strobel.
