NICE you did it good,,i sang it to my children when they were little as my dad did for me..now i call my motorcycle Matillda as i roam the countryside...lol
Beatifully sung HOWEVER, The Original was an old ENGLISH BALLAD which went like this 'A Gay Grenadier went marching down to Rochester going to fight in the Low Lands Low.....The Low Lands Low Oh the Low Lands Low.Going to Fight in the Low Lands low. Now if you would like to try those words to the air you will see that it is a perfect fit..This preceded the eventual Walzing Matilda so beloved by Australians Sorry but true Cobber...PS the word 'GAY' had no homosexual meaningh then lol
just click on my name and it will take you to my channel where all the songs are there (please note youtube has wrecked my arms of angel and out of reach videos and the audio now has static so dont click on them till i get new ones done)
Actually it sounds like a German "Moritat", which is a song about a crime or a tragical encounter.
Also the "Walz" is a German costum, and the apprentices that r on the waltz still call their bags female names, like Matilda, though they usually take the names of their girlfriends today.
Maybe Paterson was inspired by those German songs and created an Australian Moritat.
I used to sing this song in elementary school as well. I have been looking for a version of this song similar to the way we used to sing it, and this is it. It is so beautiful, I can't help but shed a tear or two. Thank you for this.
have to say are you in school??? As thats the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this comment. Does it really matter where it gets sung? I have been known to sing it in the shower!!
thanks for the comment and it was originally requested when I first came on youtube by one of my subscribers but I remember having to sing it alot especially in primary school
Isn't this to a Scottish Tune, Craig Lea? That's what our Australian tour guide on the Desert Venturere told us anyway. Made me proud, thinking of the huge Scottish infuence in the music of the colonies. Colin Hay, the fella from Men at Work, is from my home town - he made the right decision to leave!
But the tune was inspired by the Scottish song "Thou Bonnie Wood Of Craigielea". So yeah, your people were actually the inspiration to one of the greatest songs ever.
actually, the words "waltz" and "matilda" indicate a hige German influence.
In Germany, the "Walz" is still practiced in some crafts and of course they still have their Matilda, which is a bag to carry their belongimng and to keep them warm in the night.
It is no scottish costum and no scottish tune.
In fact is resembles the songs the apprentices sing when they r on their waltz to earn a few bucks.
Oh get over it, I thought it was lovely. And I do appreciate how she put her stamp of originality on such a beautiful song, which she pulled of magnificently. Besides, if everyone stuck to the tried and true, how would anything new come about?
grrr why can't people just stay to the original beat of the song and not try to change a true aussie song!!! like its good but u drag it out a bit. I just like the original way better
Jumbuck...lol you guys are so funny with your word and i mean in a good way i`ve never been to the land downunder but i`v love ever Ozzy that has crossed my path. To my favorite people (other that Canadian we ROCK lol) Shove a jumbuck in yer tucker bag mates!
Banjo Paterson should be flipping in his grave to hear you apologize for singing this song! Can't tell you how many "Fosters" I emptied, sitting around a campfire in the bottom of Grand Canyon while singing this song with a gang of equally enebriated Aussies. It is a song with heart AND soul!(and even under protest)your rendition is up to the task!Nicely done!
lol i didnt mean it in a bad way apologising it wasnt a song Id ever expected to get as a request...i used to have to sing it at school as a child...it had been a long while...happy to say its one that i have been singing since i recorded this
I haven't heard the Tom Waits version, but I had a listen to a couple of the other renditions on Youtube, and I really do prefer this one... however, it probably depends on your mood whether one version is better than another. I think this version here is very relaxing, and easy on the head when one listens to it. Well done, aussieguitarprincess, from a "Pom" who can't sing or play the guitar.
not sure depends on what level i had it on when recording it sometimes i forget to check it if so just pump up the volume on your computer will try and remember to keep the volume up high
Omg! This is awesome.. Do you know what would be so great..? You and john williamson doing a duet of this! Itll be so good! =D Jus an idea Hehe Love it!
yes i know the seekers is closest I could find that did a cover of waltzing matilda and not sure if i know the other one I'll look it up and have a listen...thanks for the encouragement and comments :)
