  • R.I.P Pigpen

  • The dead is and was always sloppy, rambling and showed a general lack of talent. I guess it was the acid that made people like them. I saw them live in 73 and was as unimpressed with them then as now, and all points in between. Bad timing sloppy meandering leads and no punctuation. And Pig pen couldnt sing blues as well as my cat. Mr charlie however is a fine song to cover.

  • @blou4now well by the obvious fact that you even took the time to try and rouse us, your not gonna win. why would we care what you dislike about it. nobody asked you to come here. go wherever you wanna be.

  • Love him so much. He means more to me than I can say. If anybody has any idea where I can get his solo "apartment demos" please let me know. Theyre here on YT somewhere...but please send me a P.M. if you know of a CD or somethin. Thankx and much love ♥

  • Pig is dying here and singing the blues. that is as pure as it gets. Just feel it. It's like Howling Wolf dying on stage and singing smokestack or Levon singing Jed with terminal cancer. Dead man singing is a unique part of music culture.

  • Youtube comments are a good practice in zen detachment....let go of the anger! loool ;) :D

  • I POSTED HERE BEFORE BUT ALL NEGATIVE BULLSHITTERS NEEDS TO STAY THE FUCK AWAY BASHING MUSIC OF THIS CALIBER

PIGPEN WAS INFLUENCED WHOLE LOT BY THE GREATEST MUSICIAN THAT EVER LIVED MICHEAL BLOOMFIELD

  • @yungsu100 I love Bloomfield. I was obsessed with the Electric Flag album when I was younger. Learned SO much from it. "Pigpen" is the man tho. Seems to me like the others....with the exception of Jerry.....just brushed him off. And theres a great blog online about this. They brushed him off and didnt want to see him before he died. Im serious- listen- he wanted to have one picture taken with em and they said no and sent him on his way. Pigpen died a couple days later. ♥ ya Ron!!

  • Pigpen and this music moves me to my core... it crackles with emotion, heart and rawness...

  • Ron "pigpen" McKernan. on his last legs, singing his heart out!

  • the grateful dead make music deep from their heart and unconscious

i can listen to them everyday and it never gets boring, because its so high qualitiy.

i always compare them with picasso as a painter, he made the same thing, he workes with his unconscious and thats why so many love his work so much! the same with grateful dead,

they played the most concerts before the biggest audience and had the most gigs in their career. no one will ever top that!

  • @ toomuchrose

oh man you dont have an idea of music! the grateful dead are the best band which ever has existed.

    who is ray manzarek??

    listen to little red rooster

at first to the doors version

and than to the version from rockpalast from the gd!

    that should say everything!!

  • sick

  • love that Fender tone on Jer...

  • The Dead were never any good, and this is a travesty. They should be arrested and flogged for inflicting such criminal damage to the blues.

    Total shit.

  • @toomuchrose Hey, Farmer. I hope you've blocked this fuck.

  • @thepirateboy81 Typical stupid comment from a Deadhead. Fuck you too.

  • @toomuchrose HEY MOTHERFUCKER HOW SMART IS YOUR FAGIT ASS YOU TALK SHIT ABOUT S.F. MUSICIANS AND MUSIC FROM CHICAGO I DO NOT LIKE THAT MAN BOTH CITIES I HAVE STRONG TIES WITH AND MY BROTHER HAD INFUENTIAL ROLE AS A STUDENT IN CHICAGO AND AS A TUTOR IN SANFRANCISCO YOU TALK SHIT LIKE YOU KNEW RAY I FUCKEN KNOW YOU DONT SCUMFUCK HE

DONT LIKE YOUR ASS I TAKE IT PERSONAL WHEN YOU TALK SHIT ABOUT CITY MY BROTHER CALLED HOME YOU NEED TO STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM IT FUCKYOU SCUMFUCK

  • @yungsu100 Fuck you, you're a brain-dead shit head. I'd call you a motherfucker but you probably don't have a mother and even if you did you ain't got a cock to fuck her with. Pigpen couldn't sing and he certainly can't sing this song. Get it? Or are you deaf as well as retarded?

I don't give a fuck about San Francisco or Chicago or your fucking brother.

    Back in your hole hillbilly.

  • @yungsu100 Didnt you ask for help that the fb1 is ass fucking your brother in a hi rise in japan, well im here to help ya, what do you need, what can i do for you.

  • @toomuchrose I agree i love music from that era but these guys suck, ray manzarek said something like '"you always knew when you were in san francisco when you heard a long out of tune durge of a set by the grateful dead"

  • @AbsintheDream i think famailarity breeds contempt and thats y a lot of people dont like the grateful dead( to burrow a lesson from aesops fables), but i like em cuz they are new to me, bein wet behind the ears, and socially isloated lol

  • Erics' version is good too...can you imagine taking banjo lessons from him?

  • I guess the blues was not really their thing, huh?

  • @RootsinBrooklyn ????? where's your head at ????

  • @williewillphoto Where's my head at? I am just not one to deify these guys. They did many things well. Some things, perhaps, better than most. But, in my opinion, playing blues - as evidenced by this video clip - was definitely not one of them.

(This rendition of a blues staple is almost pitiful. I've heard the song performed with more gusto by bar bands, that, outside their hometown, no one has ever heard of).

    Where's your head at???

  • @RootsinBrooklyn ?? I guess a much different place than you. I was kind of thinking your initial comment might have been in jest, but to each his own.

  • Pig was a class act all the way, only member that would thank the crowd after each and every song he performed.

  • @rennosson I couldn't agree more, but no Mickey to be found on this tour, this was during his time away from the band (starting from early spring '71 to their "retirement" show) because of his father's dealings as their manager.

  • All these great videos, obviously done with professional camera crews (multiple angles, ect.) WHY DOESN'T SOMEONE RELEASE THEM ON DVD!!!

  • @SonjaChamerberlin: rumour has had it for some time now, that a Europe 72 box is the next big series to be brought out the vault by Rhino records, so let's hope some of these vids are included as well!

  • Pigpen one of my mentors.

  • Dont need nuttin but true blues...

  • that was fuckin unreal man

  • old memories come back again :(

  • @ 2:30... I love how Jerry just keeps pace instead of getting caught up into pig pen's friggen chops...and tearin loose.. just waits till its just right... !@#$%^&*(&^$%()+#@# =]

  • RIP RON.............

  • @kcj222: Amen, Pig left a massive hole in the Dead's sound when he was forced to retire, that was never replaced.

  • So(ul) Blues!!... So live!!!... So DEAD!!!!...

  • Thanks Pigpen! brings a tear every time....

  • A great tune by a great band. The reason we all YT these songs is because there is NOTHING out there today that even compares. All the greats have done it all and are gone. Pigpen, Jerry, Duane Allman, Jimi, Blind Owl/Canned Heat, and many more....... ALL missed but NEVER forgotten. RIP all my heroes.

  • Amen to that.

  • pig sounds like a hurt old hound dog and i mean that in the best way possible:)

  • this is the fuckin shit!

  • damn a 72 video of the dead

  • Thanks HairFarmer for this video . The Great PigPen !

  • brings a tear every time I hear it. Thanks Pig!

  • you live live in a concert;)

  • drugs are bad to ritualize and praise, experiment but just keep in mind that the more you do the worst it gets , and also remember you can do whatever you want, with or without drugs,

  • I miss Pig. He never gets enough credit, possibly because many younger Heads never got to see him.

  • Pigpen is another example of a great man who died too young

  • Stop putting this crap on youtube no one cares and if they do there losers. It gets old dude. Come On!

  • Fuck off dude! (Discokid715)

  • Fuck You hubbas! Your not cool buddy... Sorry :)

BTW, dutdu, my experience is that if you're on LSD and you listen to anything then it will probably be truly loved.

  • @afcfcz Only the smart people.

  • if your on LSD or something and your listening to any song from grateful dead then it will be truly loved

  • i wish pig put out a solo album

  • there is a Pigpen solo record called Bring Me My Shotgun

  • is it in circulation?

  • Just a great lil' bluesy tune. Pigpen nails it. Jerry wails away. I always liked the Dead best with Pigpen and the Blues influence he had on the band. RIP Jerry and Pig. Thanks for posting.

  • From this video, Keith is also amongst those watching the grass grow from the underside, lest we forget....

  • how do i get the pig album?any leads? thanks

  • @donveill: It's not in circulation officially, since it was never actually brought to the point of production. It is a loose collection of his own demos over the years. You can find it in trading circles, but be forewarned about the later songs in the year leading up to his death (i.e. No Time/No Tomorrow) very sad and gut wrenching stuff.

  • okay now everybody shut up!fuck you nazi's and deadhater's your all douchebags

  • yeah i know man stupid fuckin cocksuckers pissing on the dead.long live the dead

  • and listen to elmore james, that´s real blues

  • oh, you must be very educated, dachau is in germany, and usa is on war in iraq, puts N-Bomb to Nagasaki and hiroshima, don´t tell me about peace you "Peace" of Crap

  • was jerry using an open tuning on the song??

  • No, regular tuning

  • Hello Phil has a pick in his mouth!

  • gotta love that good ol' slide guitar! R.I.P jerry

  • Rest in peace Jer & Pigpen..

    We Miss You a lot!

    Peace,

    Mags

  • i LIKE it...

  • Komplett Falsch. Mit pigpen dabei, konnten sies schon.

  • der gesang ist wirklich schlimm,

    the singing is really bad

    mir gefällts überhaupt nicht

  • Your country was really bad.

  • why, what do you mean?

  • Tremendous.

  • what's phil smoking??!!! (around 3:20)??

  • Good observation!

  • looks like a nice joint.

  • ahhh good ol pigpen

  • Love when Ron sings...classic

  • I was at this concert and this video brought tears to my eyes...did the whole '72 and '81 European tours, as well as '78 Gizah tour. Of all the GD stuff I have...I don't have this! Thanks!

  • Right on, Crumb & Crowl. It is beyond words how great it is to be able to see all the available vid nowadays of the group with Pig on stage. It is only a video, but he seems larger than life (very intense performer). When the guys started to drift in a show (which might have been a problem at this one..see that thing hanging from Phil's mouth..it is Denmark after all) Pig would bring em back on track and kick them up a gear.

  • Literally brings a tear to my eye. Pigpen rocks. As always thanks Jerry.

  • I've never stopped listening .Especially with Ronnie singing

  • Well that loosness serves a greater purpose. It offered a degree of musical versatility that no other band that I know of has; it was essential to their long improvised jams. So, not only do you get a different version of a song night to night but songs could change over time (drastically), and like I said, without that looseness they couldn't enter much sonic exploration in search of "those" moments, nor could they play radical setlists wherein songs literally weaved in and out of one another

  • Nice to see Phil playing with his fingers. Can;t find footage of that easily.

  • What a solo by Garcia. Outer space and the blues fusing together, one and the same.

    R.I.P. Pigpen, Keith, and Jerry.

  • This one makes me cry too. Pigpen was brilliant. Always been my favorite member of the Dead. God rest him. thanx for the video. God Bless. xx

  • thanks for all your pig stuff. when i remember hes not here anymore, i lose some tears.

  • i keep seeing videos from this very concert, and i want this concert on DVD, i just love every song i have heard them do from this concert....(not that any of their songs are not amazing from any of their concerts.) RIP Jerry

  • His slide work aint too bad on the NRPS album

  • Btw he played Pedal Steel for NRPS. Close but not quite slide electric guitar.

  • You're joking right? He played it the way he liked to play it.

  • As a guitar player slide is hard to play slide. It is hard to play in regular tuning which jerry is in. but in open tunnings like E it's easy

  • my two favorite people and their friends at their best- PHIL AND PIG! YEA!

  • PIGPEN!!

  • literally brings a tear to my eye...

  • BLESS OL PIG!!!

  • Out of tune, and way off tempo. The amazing Grateful Dead. Still packs big soul, but they didn't have it together; they weren't "tight", but that's okay. Too stoned.

  • Out of tune?

    Off tempo?

    compared to what?

  • yeah, really? listen to the version on Europe '72 if you want tight. the monitors weren't working that night!

  • the E 72 is far superior to any other version overall, but every version has particular high spots, and i love the slide here, again not as intense IMHO as the E72 version, but has a nice blown sound. Pig's harp solo on E 72 is the one that all other's are measures by, it is the one that myself and scads of countless other harmonica players have known by heart for years. Miss these guys so so much, glad they were here at one point in all our lives peace from jersey

  • dude you sound too stoned to know wtf you are blabbering about

  • no the jerry's version is the best! jerry is the best!! you're stupid?!

  • Beautiful, but you have to listen the Karen Dalton´s version. That realy will hurt you.

  • I agree totally!

  • was this pigpen's last concert or around there?

  • cool.

  • Lesh playing bass with a friggin j hanging from his lips!!. Those were the days!!!

  • ha,right! during a live TV transmission!

  • looks like it to me

  • grateful dead ....whoa what a band ...other times guyz other times and remember jerry was playng without 2 fingers...and he lost it when he was 10 years old...so obiuvsly he learn to play guitar without the 2 fingers.....so take your consideration...RIP Jerry

  • One finger actually. the outer half of the right index finger. Not that much of a hinderance for a right-handed guitarist. Perhaps you're thinking of Tony Iomi? He lost half of two fingers on his right hand. Being left handed he had to make little stumpy attachments and de-tune his guitar, making the strings looser and lower in pitch, to be able to play.

  • It was actually his middle finger on his right hand. Even, with this hinderance he still played the banjo better than the average man can walk. God Bless You Jerry.

  • get yer facts straight yo!

  • What can ya say- - pig was da-man

The footage of him & Jerry side by side is tooo fuckin good for words...

  • and THAT's how its done. Love pigpen, thanks for the post. Hard to believe we lost him soon after this.

  • lovin it

  • Awesome Footage of Pigpen.

  • Thanks for sharing this great nugget(as well as all the other clips). One of the last few shows with Pigpen....

  • Sick style. Pig didnt just have the blues, he WAS the blues.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • AWESOME!!! More Pigpen footage?

  • The other Pig tunes from this collection are both over 100mb, sorry

  • New to the Youtube but not to Pig...this was great!! is there any of the Good Lovin and is it possible to aquire copies of the bigger files...damn, I'm in heaven, thank you so much.

  • love the pigpen
