Pig is dying here and singing the blues. that is as pure as it gets. Just feel it. It's like Howling Wolf dying on stage and singing smokestack or Levon singing Jed with terminal cancer. Dead man singing is a unique part of music culture.
@yungsu100 I love Bloomfield. I was obsessed with the Electric Flag album when I was younger. Learned SO much from it. "Pigpen" is the man tho.
@williewillphoto Where's my head at? I am just not one to deify these guys. They did many things well. Some things, perhaps, better than most. But, in my opinion, playing blues - as evidenced by this video clip - was definitely not one of them.
(This rendition of a blues staple is almost pitiful. I've heard the song performed with more gusto by bar bands, that, outside their hometown, no one has ever heard of).
@RootsinBrooklyn ?? I guess a much different place than you. I was kind of thinking your initial comment might have been in jest, but to each his own.
@rennosson I couldn't agree more, but no Mickey to be found on this tour, this was during his time away from the band (starting from early spring '71 to their "retirement" show) because of his father's dealings as their manager.
@SonjaChamerberlin: rumour has had it for some time now, that a Europe 72 box is the next big series to be brought out the vault by Rhino records, so let's hope some of these vids are included as well!
@ 2:30... I love how Jerry just keeps pace instead of getting caught up into pig pen's friggen chops...and tearin loose.. just waits till its just right... !@#$%^&*(&^$%()+#@# =]
A great tune by a great band. The reason we all YT these songs is because there is NOTHING out there today that even compares. All the greats have done it all and are gone. Pigpen, Jerry, Duane Allman, Jimi, Blind Owl/Canned Heat, and many more....... ALL missed but NEVER forgotten. RIP all my heroes.
drugs are bad to ritualize and praise, experiment but just keep in mind that the more you do the worst it gets , and also remember you can do whatever you want, with or without drugs,
Just a great lil' bluesy tune. Pigpen nails it. Jerry wails away. I always liked the Dead best with Pigpen and the Blues influence he had on the band. RIP Jerry and Pig. Thanks for posting.
@donveill: It's not in circulation officially, since it was never actually brought to the point of production. It is a loose collection of his own demos over the years. You can find it in trading circles, but be forewarned about the later songs in the year leading up to his death (i.e. No Time/No Tomorrow) very sad and gut wrenching stuff.
oh, you must be very educated, dachau is in germany, and usa is on war in iraq, puts N-Bomb to Nagasaki and hiroshima, don´t tell me about peace you "Peace" of Crap
I was at this concert and this video brought tears to my eyes...did the whole '72 and '81 European tours, as well as '78 Gizah tour. Of all the GD stuff I have...I don't have this! Thanks!
Right on, Crumb & Crowl. It is beyond words how great it is to be able to see all the available vid nowadays of the group with Pig on stage. It is only a video, but he seems larger than life (very intense performer). When the guys started to drift in a show (which might have been a problem at this one..see that thing hanging from Phil's mouth..it is Denmark after all) Pig would bring em back on track and kick them up a gear.
Well that loosness serves a greater purpose. It offered a degree of musical versatility that no other band that I know of has; it was essential to their long improvised jams. So, not only do you get a different version of a song night to night but songs could change over time (drastically), and like I said, without that looseness they couldn't enter much sonic exploration in search of "those" moments, nor could they play radical setlists wherein songs literally weaved in and out of one another

Out of tune, and way off tempo. The amazing Grateful Dead. Still packs big soul, but they didn't have it together; they weren't "tight", but that's okay. Too stoned.
the E 72 is far superior to any other version overall, but every version has particular high spots, and i love the slide here, again not as intense IMHO as the E72 version, but has a nice blown sound. Pig's harp solo on E 72 is the one that all other's are measures by, it is the one that myself and scads of countless other harmonica players have known by heart for years. Miss these guys so so much, glad they were here at one point in all our lives peace from jersey
grateful dead ....whoa what a band ...other times guyz other times and remember jerry was playng without 2 fingers...and he lost it when he was 10 years old...so obiuvsly he learn to play guitar without the 2 fingers.....so take your consideration...RIP Jerry
One finger actually. the outer half of the right index finger. Not that much of a hinderance for a right-handed guitarist. Perhaps you're thinking of Tony Iomi? He lost half of two fingers on his right hand. Being left handed he had to make little stumpy attachments and de-tune his guitar, making the strings looser and lower in pitch, to be able to play.
It was actually his middle finger on his right hand. Even, with this hinderance he still played the banjo better than the average man can walk. God Bless You Jerry.
New to the Youtube but not to Pig...this was great!! is there any of the Good Lovin and is it possible to aquire copies of the bigger files...damn, I'm in heaven, thank you so much.

the E 72 is far superior to any other version overall, but every version has particular high spots, and i love the slide here, again not as intense IMHO as the E72 version, but has a nice blown sound.
