Excellent video, my man! You should replace your current pliers with some locking vice grip pliers to ensure a slip-proof grip on your spike. Also, I recommend that you get yourself a blacksmith apron. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Nicely done I just started this hobby and felt I did not have enough gear you have showed me otherwise. I don't have an anvil but I lie the sledgehammer idea
Wow kidsmith ! you are so helpfull ! i realy apreaciate your video ! you have almost notin to work and u did real great ! thanks for your video ! i will build a forge like u and a anker ! i cant wait for this summer ! sorry for my english im quebeker ! dont stop your good vidéo ! i will learn from u !
LIl Dude you rock! Here is a Shout from Oklahoma! The men of Ace Electric in Stillwater! We are going to build a forge and make a few spikes like you, You have shown us the way! God bless you and keep it up!
Really good videos. You seem to know a lot. It's surprising, because of your age... not so many kids knows what forging is lol.
You got very promising skills... you HAVE to work them! It would be awesome to see what you will do in 3 years more!
I will suggest you just one tip: Safety first... you drop some times the red spike, and you weren't using any protection... that can harm you really bad, so you should wear some protective clothes.
Don't hit it when it aint red because it takes a lot more work to get the same effect as if you had just heated it again. But that could just be the camera distorting the color a bit but great work.
You had me cringing as you tried to twist that spike! Very bad idea without a vise. I'd at least get some nice leather work gloves. Nice video though! I will be trying my hand forging soon. Try aluminum casting also it fun.
Gotta work those muscles so you can twist the spike!!!
Hahaha, just kiding, I couldnt twist that either!
Just some words of adVISE though, Get a vice and clamp the spike in just above the blade, then take a relativly long set of tongs to give you some leverage, and then twist it using both hands.
Your technique needs a little work, but you definitely have the 'eye' and the 'hands' for blade smithing. You also have the 'heart' or desire for it, because it appears you care more for making a knife than playing a video game.
I've not yet watched your other videos, but from this one I can tell you will one day be a master smith!
When you get your tongs, anvil and forge (etc.), things will be easier.
Good videos, you seem to have a pretty good grasp of what you're doing but you definitely need to get some proper tools and atleast a little safety gear.
I was cringing the whole way through the first video, anticipating a nasty 3rd degree burn at any moment!
My son, Ikey is 10 and just made his first forge and was checking out your video today. Thank you! He will go to work tomorrow on forging his first knife!
Great Job man! Just a bit of advice though. While quenching dont swirl it around and dip it 90 degrees veretically....This ensures nice even cooling and also reduces the risk of cracks and distortion
nice work, I admire your resourcefulness. It's good to see a kid that's doing something other than playing video games and sending text messages. Keep it up man, you rock! btw, I suded yuh
Great Videos. Nice work! I make knives by stock removal (grinders/steel blanks) and have wanted to learn more about forging. I may have to try with rebar to learn on. (I've been watching Purgatory Iron Works stuff on here, good fella. I wanna make a forge from a brake drum, and I have a piece of railroad track for a anvil). I've read a squared off hammer is easier to flatten the blade portion out with. You are very industrious. Response continued:
If you keep at this, you'll be writing books on this by the time you are in college! One more thing: sell one or two knives to buy that vise, (or any other tool you need and don't have/can't get) as it will make the twisting easier. If no one offers to buy a knife from you, send me a message.
i make rr spike knife if you woul;d like to buy 1 for around 25$ or 30$ ill sell one to you thats oil harded ill make a vid of them to show befor selling
Wouldn't it be easier to use the belt grinder after hardening to help with some of the shaping, sanding, and sharpening? You have to make sure you don't overheat the blade, but I have found this saves lots of hand work. Check my video.
one thing though people in the us might think this is wierd at your school so dont worry about them and do what you like (forging) dont listen to the criticism
forging is nice practice on sharpening but other than that good job
