It is constantly adapting to the feelings of the universal occupants, changing to whichever is most prominent at the time. So, if, let's say, 75+% were feeling the need for revenge, it would be darkness. However, if it were the other way around, it would be light. Simple(ish).
my guess is that sora still believed in that "light within darkness" thing, and since he couldn't see and light, it must have been Kingdom Hearts that was the light

I think Tom didn't chose sword at the very beginning. Instead (according to a gamefaqs guide), he chose the shield. So, he'll learn MP Haste at level 63 (if you chose sword, you'll get it at level 45).
Well, he chose shield at the beginning. So, he got MP Haste at level 63 (right after finishing off Ansem). In HellDragon's playthrough (which was covered in most of the vid before final boss), he chose sword, so he already have MP Haste since level 45.
Did anyone else notice that in that form, that "Ansem" is actually a lot bigger than usual. If you get to a point where he does nothing and you move Sora next to him, you'll notice Ansem is like a giant.
