it was an interesting race leading up to the crash. i'm glad they didn't cancel the race. too bad for alex though but i'm pretty sure he knew something like that could happen any day.
Let's not forget Alex raced and won in World Touring Cars in a modified BMW. He's also won in a hand bike at the NYC Marathon and will be competing in the 2012 Paralympics. A true inspiration.
I'm always so caught up in Alex's awful accident during this race that I often retrospectively forget it took place in the week of 9/11. A dreadful end to a dreadful week. :-(
The tenth anniversary of not only the saddest day in American History, but of one of the saddest in American Open-Wheel Racing history. In fact, this is in the top three, along with the split and Greg Moore's death at Auto Club Speedway (as it's now called) in 1999.
@AutoRockinRacing94 Yeah, I 1,000% agree with you. If it wasn't for the fact that this race was being run outside the US, it more than likely would have been cancelled. This, in fact, ranks up there with the NFL playing the Sunday after JFK's death as one of the dumbest tragedy related non-cancellations in the history of sports.
2001, in my opinion was the saddest year in life. The deaths Thuy Trang (yellow ranger), Dale Earnhardt Sr., Aaliyah, George Harrison, the plane accident in Queens NY, Alex Zanardi losing both legs, and least forget is the 9/11 tragedy.
This is my second "favorite" CART Race (Right Behind the 1991 Laguna Seca Race, albeit for vastly different reasons) not only because of how poignant the event was, but because the career of one of the greatest open-wheel racers ever to race in the United States was ended almost tragically and sadly.
This was the saddest CART race I have ever seen. Not only was this right after 9/11 but this is also the race where my favorite CART driver's open wheel career came to an irrupt end. :'(

In 2001 I saw Zanardis crash live in TV and I was shocked beacause that crash seemed very bad and I thought that it's Zanardis end...

i have mixed feelings about this race. it was horible when alex got hurt and just after 911 but i thought it was a good race.

Does anyone watching this cheer or at least smile when Zanardi makes a pass?

Somewhere out there, there is the complete 13 laps that Zanardi ran in 2003, might you know someone who may have it?
