Just lovely, honey drenched tone on every note, and clear, flawless intonation. Not even one note is thrown away carelessly ugh. That 2nd violinist principal is prob thinking "that man...I hate him!"
I can never get enough of this piece. What is it with Russians and their knack for conveying dark intensity?? And those 32nd triplets/sextuplets...so urgently beautiful.
Is this the Sonata dedicated to Enescu or Kreisler? I can't remember...anyway, this is beyond awesome (almost beyond human) playing both musically and technically, Vengerov is a modern legend...
the violin world needs Maxim back! As much as he's a great conductor, I still want him to "unretire" as a violinist...he was one of the few modern violinists who truly moved me musically.
@HQartmusic I thought he retired because of an arm or shoulder injury. Is he really back performing on violin again? If so, that would be great. Where did you hear the news? I think he's one of the greatest violinists I've ever heard.

go to maximvengerovfans website, it's all there .... there is also a new video interview where he talks about his return to the violin. Search in Youtube as: "Maxim Vengerov Bruxelles"

wicked shifting, finger patterns, and double stops...The first, second, and 6th page isn't too bad for sightreading, but for the rest of the pages, I have to sit down and look at each note by note...

@DaveD5929 why on earth would that guy from the 2nds be pissed at vengerov....whatever it is i dont think it would be based on how he's playing the piece....or he may be jealous that vengerov has superior technique than him.
I just love the continuity of the musical line and phrasing that Vengerov brings to this. Using his phenomenal technique so fully in the service of the music, it is truly a great thing.
Vengerov¨s interpretation is over the top further than the other violinist because his unique sound and technique can make the difference , he is a truly god
Merci de ton agressivité et de ton impolitesse. Merci de ne pas admettre la moindre critique. Merci enfin de ta grande connaissance en violon et en ses interprètes.
Almost as awe-inspiring as the first time I watched this performance clip 3-4 years ago, although having recently recovered from my addiction to Frank Peter Zimmerman's recording of Ysaye's violin sonatas, I am amazed at how volatile Vengerov's performance seems in comparison to FPZ's both interpretively and intonation-wise. I suppose that's how most live performances compare to recordings, but still...
yeah, venegerov's generally a bit volatile (for better or for worse), whereas zimmerman's much more clinical. same could be said for live vs studio recordings.
i love zimmerman's 5th sonata, but for the 3rd, vengerov's live recording is tops imo. :p even beats his studio recordings of it.
i think that the octave is. played by heifetz. I think that that is the most powerful sound on the violin. ysaye is awesome, though, and with vengerov!
i like how at the begining and through out the piece it gets real soft then all strong and powerful i am a violinist also but only first chair for the 6th garde but AMAZING
His music is becoming part of Russian avangard tradition.
It is remarkable that music tends to be a step ahead of rest of arts in self destruction, as it has to respond to irreversible changes in the fabric of sounds immediately.
However, it finds its master of expression matching the time later then the rest because it takes a generation of artists to internalize the new style, born technique, and then create interpretation complete and perfect in an of itself.
I didn't say it's bad. it's just, compared to other interpretations, quite boring, because maxim, as he always does, comes to the fore with his virtuosity. He doesn't really present the piece, he presents himself. That's normal for such virtuosi... of course, technically, it's very well played....but that's all....
@Hagensblood You may have written this comment two years ago. But I'll bet five dollars you are still a total asshole. Post your own fucking version, please.
I love this video, I also have it downloadable on my website. This video made me wanted to play this beautiful piece; so now I'm playing it and boy, is it hard to capture the same style.
But Maxim is more showing off than musical work. This peace is titled "Ballade" but he play it somehow like a Paganini-Caprice. But Ysaye is no "simple" virtuosi.
A "ballade" may have moments of drama and extroverted passion as well as introverted quiet beauty. Perfect examples: the four piano Ballades of Chopin.
Ernst's "The Last Rose of Summer"?! That's child's play comparatively. Vengerov has recorded it; so has Gidon Kremer. (Both are excellent). But it's "easy" in terms of interpretation. Ysaye, besides its immense technical requirements, requires a deep understanding of music itself in order to pull off with justice.
Also, if you want hard, try the Echo Sonata by Shchedrin (also on Vengerov's solo album). Some crazy experimental soviet writing in that one.
think you can really fight about what's the most difficult piece...anyway this was the first comment i ever wrote on youtube...so i'll just see that as a compliment, well thanks!
probably one of the most difficult pieces but not the most difficult piece ever....saw a 16 year old playing this already quite well if you ask me... if you want to see something really difficult search for " Frank Peter Zimmermann" and his performance of the "God Save The King Variations"...
Lots of perfection, maximum style, arguably the most difficult piece in the world. Maxim is, in my opinion, the greatest living violinist. His only real rival is Perlman who is inconvenienced by his big hands, which give him weaknesses in slow passages and a somewhat shaky vibrato. Though, to a degree, this is made up in his bow control. Maxim, however, is almost flawless - he is only contentious, really, for his more contemporary interpretations and his irritating movements.
That is an arguable statement. The Ysaye is an incredibly challenging work and requires almost unparalleled virtuosity to play like Maxim does. However, one could argue that something like the Tchaikovsky Concerto requires greater stamina and concentration, due to its length and the consistency of difficulty throughout.
So authentically? Not really. It takes me about two minutes to knock out a perfunctory reply to dull and ignorant comments. However, to add another to the list of most difficult, I would have to agree with LevonCoates - the Echo Sonata by Shchedrin is rather ridiculous. But on topic - rather than attacking my comments as intelligent and authentic, perhaps you could attempt to improve your dull, pointless and mildly illiterate rebuttal.
Although, I do agree, the Schoenberg is a tough one. But not, as you seem to think, assuredly the toughest. It depends on the strengths and weaknesses of the violinist. FOr example - a violinist with little stamina but great dexterity and technical virtuosity would find the Tchaikovsky more difficult than the Schoenberg. And the unaccompanied nature of the Ysaye and the Echo Sonata is incredibly intimidating. It really is a subjective choice based upon the strengths of the violinist.
You must take into account that Ysaye 3 is quite a short sonata. look at the 1st sonata. I think you will find it more difficult. Its pretty ugly at the beginning but it gets nice.
well im sorry you feel attacked. im simply expressing my opinions. i dont see how i attacked you. Its funny that you say i attacked your comments while calling my comment "dull and ignorant." and congratulations for your great ability to "knock out a perfunctory reply"
On Ernst, Erlkonig trans is much harder than Last Rose of Summer. Either way, not Shcherdrin nor Ernst not Ysaye wrote anything close to the most difficult violin music. Within the realm of half-standard repertoire the opening cadenza of Ginastera's violin concerto is utterly impossible at marked tempi; beyond that look at Xenakis' Dihktas or Ferneyhough's Carceri d'Invenzione III; the stochastic, spectral and new complexity schools have produced music that makes this look like Kreutzer.
Perlman yes...Bell...not even close. I've seen both perform live, Bell's a musician for the masses, Maxim is a musician's musician. I'm sure Josh Bell could play this, and do it very well, but not close to this quality.
