It is such a dynamic event, with both ends of the chamber moving (the falling weight being one end, and the tennis ball being the other end) that the pressure varies quite a bit and will vary throughout the tube. I suspect it is more like a shock wave that pushes the ball out. I realize we are not achieving the kind of velocities that people get either through combustion or using a compressor. The chief appeal of this contraption is that it is entirely kid powered, and very repeatable.
