I met Tony at Tampa airport when I was a gate agent and he was boarding a flight. I wouldnt let him on until he signed his boarding pass for me. He was so gracious and kind. He stopped and talked to me for a few seconds. It was right after his HOF induction. What a kind and wonderful man.
Big Dog is awesome, I remember as a kid listening to Joe Nuxall inteviewing Tony as "star of the game" after he ended a hitting slum with a home run to dead center field to win the game for the reds. When Joe ask him what Klew (Ted Klewzuski the hitting coach for the Reds) told him to get him out of the slum Tony said, "he tell me just to hit de ball up de middle but I don't think he mean that far",,, what a riot!!!
Baseball in Cincinnati was never the same after Tony was traded to Montreal. He was the catalyst that held the Big Red Machine together. After he was traded it was no longer about the Machine but rather about the collection of individuals. Perhaps the worst trade in baseball history...and what ever happened to Woody Fryman?
