  • 14 people are dead inside!

  • Happy Birthday Art, You are such a great singer

  • So, SILVERGIRL refers to the singer's wife? I mean, a mature, old wife? Don't American women dye their hair? In Brazil, almost all Brazilian women do, "cause they don't like to look like old! (GILBERTO SAUGEN DO BRASIL)

  • @gsaugen -- in America, some women dye their hair, but many of us don't mind looking our true ages, because there is more to us than just looks

  • I love S&G song !!!

  • @gsaugen silver girl is and was a term for heroin, the verse was added in at the last minute because Simon and Garfunkel felt the song needed something else, it changed the meaning to one of support for someone who is troubled by drug addiction.

  • Listen to Scottish Singer/songwriter singing 'The Sound of Silence' just out! In MONO OR STEREO MIX.

  • I have a question for all S & G fans: What does SAIL ON, SILVERGIRL mean in BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS? Who's SILVERGIRL? I'm not a native speaker of English and I guess my English is good but I've never understood the meaning of those verses. Could anyone explain them to me? (GILBERTO SAUGEN FROM BRAZIL)

  • @gsaugen it means like when a baby bird flies away from its nest for the first time and sees the world on its own, without the parent. I do not know who specifically the silver girl is but that is what the phrase means.. hope this helps :)

  • @gsaugen The line "Sail on, silver girl" is often reputed to refer to a needle (meaning the song is about heroin) but it actually refers to Simon's girlfriend (and later wife) Peggy Harper who found a few gray hairs and was upset. The lyric was meant as a joke - Simon calling her "Silver Girl" because of her hair. (thanks, Helen - York, England)

  • Still fabulous after all these years. We love you Arty.

  • This must be the voice of an angel

  • @carpetbud222 just shows that art could somewhat still sing in the original tone

  • I like when the tone of the song went to the original sound for the last verse, it was cool to hear Art get up there with his voice still

  • I had the honour of farewelling my father to to this song 3 days ago. tears but many smiles. RIP PETE HEWETT.

  • The first album I ever bought was Bridge Over Troubled Water. I wore out two copies of it, an 8 track and then a cassette. And after all these years I still think Art Garfunkel singing this song is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. I used to sing my kids to sleep with his music (him alone, not so much with Paul) and now they love it too!

  • classic... great...

  • no eltrombonverde he does no suck

  • art garfunkel is not an amazing singer, he is the MOST amazing singer ever

  • I personally think his vocal is great on this video, considering what health issues he's had, and also the natural deterioration of the human voice over time. Anyone who thinks he's going to be able to sing it like he could in 1969 is daft.

  • This vocal (just not coval, but I am a Dutchy) cord paresis takes a long time to be cured.

Many tours have been cancelled in 2010 and Art hopes to come on stage again end of 2011. Yes he has grown older and fetter, but I have too. I am curieus of the ages from the people who critisize Art here. Are they the young ones among us and thus not be aware of the sounds of the old LP`s? I have their LP`s as something precious for me: especcialy the songs sung by Art Garfunkel. I saw them in 1969.

  • Dear folks,

I`m on a age of 58 and this means that I heard the original versions of this song when Ik was 18! It is true: Art is born in New York on nov, 1941: so his age is 69,5 years now. I loved his voice always very much: just lately rediscovered this time of my youth. When you are young, your voice might be stronger than when you get older. Art has stopped smoking because of a coval cord paresis. Perhaps this might be the cause of the change in the strength of his voice.

  • if he was born in '41 then he's 70

  • im sorry.. but in my opinion, this sucks.. and Im one of the most open minds to music! his voice does not hit my ear right at all

  • @eltrombonverde His voice isn't what it used to be. Listen to the original. One of the best songs, and most powerful voices ever at the end of it.

  • @eltrombonverde you deaf?

  • @eltrombonverde I'm so sorry for you...! Regarding your "open" mind...never mind.

  • Great singer. Scary mouthed old man.

  • One of my dearmost songs ever. Thanks for posting. Look how with age, the voice declines somewhat, but how strongly the spirit shines through.

  • Love it..thanks for sharing!

  • This program is called "Anima Mia" and it has been broadcasted in 1997 by Fabio Fazio and Claudio Baglioni.. It was a good program but it lasted only 10 episodes..

I remember this program very well because in Italy it has a good success and I still attended the high school... Oh, God, 14 years old have been already passed!! I can't believe it!!!!

  • Art Garfunkel has been invited by Fabio Fazio (the italian anchorman of this program called "Anima Mia") in 1997 to sing two songs: The Sounds of Silence (with our singer Claudio Baglioni) and then Bridge over troubled water, after an interview with our anchorman.. It is quite impossible to think that 14 years have been passed.. He was 56 years old and now he is almost 70.. Oh my God! I remember this program and Art singing as it was yesterday but 14 years have been passed.. Wow!!!

  • One word: breathtaking.

  • i read somewhere he just quit smoking a few yrs ago...

so if this performance was in 1999 then obvsly he was still smoking at the time, maybe that's explains the "raspiness" of his voice?

    nonetheless, i heart Garfunkel!!!!!

  • Awesome! This song always gives me goose-bumps; it fits so many people and situations in life.

  • Hear Charlotte Church's version too!

  • I noticed he was a breather

  • great voice

  • Yes.

  • screw u glee

  • Art and Paul are about 69 now, this video is going on 11 yrs now

  • I LIKE THIS SONG VERY MUCH.

    PLEASE CHECK MY VERSION.

    THANKS.

  • You can't take the "classic" out of a "classic."

  • @robby35us yeah you have... sorry m8

  • Love the song.....he's starting to look like Ed Koch, isn't he?

  • Simply Fucking Fantastic!

  • how terrebly starnge to be 70. (almost :D)

  • @missZiggy549 I thought the line was "how terribly strange to be 17" have I been singing it wrong this whole time?!

  • @robby35us yeah I'm afraid you have.. sorry mate

  • josemanuel art is 69 !!

  • One day when I die.....the voices welcoming me to heaven will sound like Art's !!! One of the most stirring voices I have ever heard & really never never itre of hearing him.....enjoy him more and more

  • he was at his best at Central Park for this song...

  • @brusko3269 check out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance from 2010. It destroys this version.

  • @justinmiller89 thanks for the link but I have to disagree with you. I still believe his best for this song was at Central Park....anyway, thanks again...

  • @cacasarq Like wine?

  • Amazing

  • is paul simon still alive?

  • like wine. this voice is amazing

  • He is absolutely wonderful! And if you watch the Central Park concert, he took a breath at the same moment there as he did here.

  • He is absolutely wonderful!

  • OMG HOW CAN ANYONE DISLIKE THIS SONG?

  • Absolutely their finest masterpiece!!! Great to hear that guy still sing it.

  • holy shit his voice hasn't gotten any worse in 40 years.. it may have gotten better!

  • Fantastic.

  • That is amazing song and singer!

  • love this song sooo relaxing and a tune to think about things x

  • X-TRA dank.................................

  • This is great, but I really feel kind of sad to see and hear how difficult it became for Art to sing this song now (or probably he had a cold??).... I can see how he holds down his voice during the song to save the power for that last sentence, and than he take's this power, but can't hold on to sing the 'miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind' in one breathtake till the end........ Really quite sad to see how his 'Leaves that were

green, now also quite clearly are turning to brown'.....

  • @Musicsmoke Watch the 1981 Central Park version. This really isn't that far off from that one. He didn't hold that note you are referring to til the end in 81 either. Point being this is almost 20 years after Central park and almost 30 years after the song was released and there is not one thing I can find sad about this performance.

  • @fenderjaguar1985 Yes indeed, you're right...... I watched the central park version.... hmm.... did he ever sing it live the way it was recorded in the studio???

Anyway; I CAN hold that note till the end myself, and probably even longer sometimes, although I smoke A LOT....... Yes well, I didn't mean sad in the way

that it was bad...... this is still a REAL NICE performance...... I just saw; this Art,

he's getting some older..... So; sad that I will probably never get the chance to see him live

  • @Musicsmoke I've never seen a performance that he did hold it as long as the recording. The Madison Square Garden version was in 2009 and is also a good one because to my knowledge it's the last time he has performed it and maybe ever will. Paul Simon does kind of screw it up in my opinion by trying to sing some parts on it. The song was written for ARTS voice so I think paul should have stood down.

  • @fenderjaguar1985 what about the 1969 recording on here?

  • @wungabunga What about it?

  • @fenderjaguar1985 he holds the note as long as the recording. in fact it's a better version than the recording imo.

  • @wungabunga If you listen to the 1969 recording he holds that last note where he says "mind" for an 8 or 9 count. If you listen to this one and the others they accent the end and hold it for about a 16 count. That's why he has to take the breath.

  • @fenderjaguar1985 yeah but not in the 1969 live version he doesn't. you said you hadn't seen a live recording of him holding the note like he does on the recorded version. just saying there is one, and it's on here.

  • @wungabunga I just watched both of the 1969 live recordings on here and it's held 9 seconds not the 16 that i counted on the other versions. If he does the Studio version of the song of course he holds it. If you listen to the more theatrical versions its held an extra 7 to 8 seconds and he takes a breath. That is the point.

  • @fenderjaguar1985 "I've never seen a performance that he did hold it as long as the recording. ".

I was responding to this comment, that you made. Hope that clears things up.

  • @fenderjaguar1985

The difference with the Central Park one is he took a quick subtle breath and carried on with the iiiiind, whereas here he stops and then says "yooooour miind". I think the first version worked better [though the recorded version without a breath is the best, but is tiring to do]

  • I am a pianist singer.. I always sing and love to sing this song. It might not be the same as Art voice but it sounds like. I hope so.. Im really touch in the melody and lyrics of this song.

  • ***goosebumps***

thankyouthankyouthankyou dear art for the decades of sharing your talent. absolutely thrilling.

  • No doubt Art Garfunkel is one of our greatest singer but I believe the song canät be completed without Paul Simon

  • @carpetbud222 Do you enjoy Paulryth von Simon?

  • paul ha scritto tutto ... ma e' ART LA VOCE !!!!

  • How old was he in that song? He was born in 1941.

  • @josemanuel599 Art is 58 at this time ;-)

  • @Oslo13

    Well, that can't be right....

When he was born in 1941, he should be 69 or maybe already 70 now........

    Need some math-lessons??

  • @Musicsmoke

It's ironic that when trying to make fun of someone for having poor math skills you show your mathematical shortcomings...

Think about it...It's impossible for someone born in 1941 to EVER turn 70 in 2010...

    Need some math lessons??

  • @Ayecandigit Yeah well, okay, that's a small mistake ok??? He should be 68 or 69 now..... But 58 is really impossible...... And I didn't try to make fun of someone for having poor math skills since I don't have good math skills myself AT ALL..... I just said that he can't be 58 when he was born in 1941...... allright????

  • @Musicsmoke Oslo meant he was 58 in THIS particular clip, this video is from 1999. Art is 69, now.

  • @Musicsmoke hes 69

  • @Oslo13 he's 70 not 58 :S

  • @TehCavern *12 years ago

  • @Oslo13 Nope! He is 69... It is sad that he is growing old, but there is no point of denying it!

  • @bearkt yes he is 69 but in this vid he was 59.

  • qaulity at it,s best. love u si & art x

  • Art Garfunkel's voice is so pure. I didn't know he acted as well! This man is multi talented. He even pursued for a PH.D.

  • Art your name explains you .. xoxoxo thank you for your voice

  • Oh my god Art thank you thank you I remember this performance.. I was always hoping you would come out on our own and by god you did and I have loved this performance every since.. your voice made the duo.. I really hope you read this.. I love your voice and I love your harmonies.. thank you so much...

  • To the one who have been a good friend... heres the song that reminds me of you. Simply knowing you care for me is a blessing i have received from above. You came at the right time. You ease my mind. And trouble is not as bad as it is when i have you as my bridge. What can i give in return, but a grateful heart and a prayer that God will continue bless you in everything :)

  • Amazing Art! You have always brought out the best in whoever hears you sing!

  • does it get any better-----

    i don't think so

    tanks for to post

  • makes me cry every time....a masterpiece......

  • he has such a nice tone to his voice.

  • If you think this is incredible (which it is), then watch the "Concert in Central Park" version. Your head will explode from the awesomeness!!!!!!!!!!!

  • S&Gの名曲中の名曲。心に染み渡ります。

  • Imperishable Art.

Back-up was a bit lacking though.

  • One of my favourite voices. What year is this please?

  • @TomGreenUK 1999 :-)

  • Incredible. His voice has scarely changed in 40 years!

  • For his age, his voice still has that quality when he was younger. I love his voice and will always remain a fan. Is Art Garfunkel 70 years old now? Amazing.

  • @P90X490104 .....69 yrs this November actually... he is amazing

  • i guess its just my taste... but i don't like him... not enough power behind his voice

  • @bigwhiteguy91 the lack of power in this video is more his age than ability. In his prime he had all the power you could ever want in a voice

  • @bigwhiteguy91 Keep in mind Art is much older here than when the song was originally recorded. Listen to "Bridge" live from 1969, or even just the recorded version (from 1970); his voice was in its prime then. Frankly, I'm surprised that Art even has a shred of his original, unusually high voice left now that he is almost 70 years old.

  • who are the 11 poor souls who didn't like this

  • I like how he cues the piano player to "bring it up."

  • You can see that he feels it just as hard as when he did it at Central Park! When he goes into 'see how they shine', I start getting riled up!

  • Aw, he's still cute!

  • Don't care what anyone says, still amazing, regardless of his age.

  • amazing singer

  • Der gute, alte Artie; er kann es immer noch :)

  • @jared1971- yea i caught that too he goes from D to the original key of the song Eb, great transition

  • Unusual key change at 2:35 ?

  • @jared1971

The whole song is played Lower than old Recordings. The Reason can be that Art´s Voice get Down. This happen by Age.Some Singers hold the Voice but many goes lower with the Age when they get older.I now in my Chorus some began as 1st Tenor and singing now as Baritone, because they have not this high anymore.

  • @Zugvogel1

Upps ...I know in my Chorus some ...not myself...little Misspelling .)

  • Pour tant de beauté

Merci, danke, thank you, gracias, grazie, ευχαριστώ, dzięki, спасибо, tack, ありがとう, 多謝, תוֹדָה,Trugarez

  • linda musica., me lembra os tempos de criança!!!

  • NICE MUSIC

  • Let's see Lady Gaga do better. Art forever <3

  • One of the best songs ever writen. Requested this at my funeral.

  • I think no matter they get, they'll always be able to sing beautiful. This is something one's born with and it's with you till the end of your life. Of course, the voices uses its power but power's not everything. :)

  • Still as Great as Ever.

  • this guy is amazing.............love it

  • NO ONE CAN TOP THIS!!THE BEST!!!

  • This song was 40 years ago no.2 in the world charts

  • GREAT SINGER...AMAZING!!!

  • I first heard this song in concert in St Louis shortly before the album was released (1969) and to this day it is the most powerful music I can ever remember hearing. No one writes like Paul and sings like Art, This song was recently performed on the concert for the disaster victims in Haiti, obviously the message is still extremely appropriate.

  • Ha ha. I'm just getting the hang of singing this song at age 58.

  • This song was 40 years ago no.1 in the world charts

  • Its as if he's looking into my soul, and i believe him when he says "I will comfort you" :')

interesting sidenote, anyone else see a bit of Dustin Hoffman in him?

  • This song was 40 years ago no.1 in the world charts

  • fantastic.. wonderful.. Art your name explains it all !!! ty

  • Just such a smooth key change at 2:35, I love this song and will always love it!!! GO ART GARFUNKEL!!!

  • ART you have aged. Me too. I watch you along since you first sing this song. you do it easily in your youth. but art of transposition at 2.36 was a great idea to cope up. and at the end part , your still there.because its your song. Who can do better. Thanks, more power.,Your great!

  • Oh my god, this is fantastic, brings me to tears every time i hear this song.

  • Che emozione.

Ti ricordo da quaggio, caro mio amico ...

  • @itallxit2 focus on good things----

  • Beautifully done! Yeah, the key change at 2:35 was truely amazing. That was truely creative thinking. I'm trying to learn the piano part for this song, and I can't imagine trying to transpose it. No, thank you. Still, great song performed by a great singer. Well done Art!

  • 2:35 was really fantastic. A perfectly written song and sang with a stunning voice !

  • who song the original was he the man

  • Yeah I think so, and Paul played the piano and harmonized

  • @FrostyTheSnowball

Larry Knechtel played the piano, now Warren Bernhardt.

  • @mark26099

yes he sang the original. it was going to be him on his own .. but when paul saw the reaction to the song he joined in at "sail on silver girl "

  • Love @ 02:35--for those who thought he couldn't do it in the original key :)

  • The end was amazing. Holy crap, that whole thing was awesome!

  • elvis sang bridge over troubled waters i like how elvis sang the song but they both have great voices

  • the most amazing voice in the world

it makes me want to cry

  • How do you think todays singers will sound at 70? Art and Paul set the bar high. No one will ever reach it

  • @kragseven I realy agree with you, NO ONE can reach his standard. love from sweden

  • @kragseven Well, I think Phil Collins is also pretty good, both when he was young and now. His farewell tour was atleast insanely good. But ye, Paul and Art set the bar pretty damn high

  • @kragseven ted nealie is pretty darn close if not better

  • His voice has an amazing haunting quality, love to hear him sing Bright eyes too!

  • @psychijan I agree. It's a beautiful song!!

  • This song touches me to the point that i cry every time i hear it. i've always loved Simon and Garfunkel.......sharon8753

  • holy shit what a voice!!! i am really impressed at the end :D

  • i'n entirely blown away in the first half of the song, where his voice is smaller, almost quiet. yet commanding. his sound is just gorgeous.

  • Couldn't agree more. He brings the audience close with the first half and then blows them away with the finale. Sheer genius. Thanks for posting

  • His voice is like aged red wine - better and better. Awesome! (I'm going to see him in Portsmouth, NH in March - once in a lifetime chance!)

  • I'm so greatful to be living in the age of YouTube.

  • I saw him in Philly. What an amazing voice and what a great concert. I wish I could have seen him and Paul in Central Park.

  • As Always , this song helps when i feel down & out .... amazing how music does that.... but I must say Art Garfunkel is one of the best at it ....

  • to watch him perform this song live is still in my bucket list ..

  • viva le reti italiane hahahahahaha
