I first knew of Judy when she was the captain of the N. Y. Bombers and she was mean as all get out. I've seen videos of her in the 60's when she was on the Tbirds and was still something of a newer skater.
Too bad Roller Derby was a few months away from going belly up. It was really kicking into high gear on the east coast. I remember looking in the Star Ledger sports section and they would post the scores and standings. They were skating at MSG & Nassau Coloseeum out on the Island.
@Jiltedin2007 It's around Jiltedin but it's sort of rag tag at the moment. T-Birds as far as I know were having reunion shows, their web page seems pretty dead at the moment.
@puck30 O.K., I remembered watching Roller Derby every Sunday Afternoon on KTLA-TV Channel 5 in Los Angeles when I was a Little Boy. Being the "L.A. Boy" that I was, I was always pulling for the Thunderbirds when I saw Dick Lane announcing Roller Derby back in 1971. Back when Judy Sowinski was "Our Worst Enemy". And when Danny Reilly wanted nothing more that to put the hurt on us. Actually no, it was in 1973 when I started seeing Danny Reilly.
@Jiltedin2007 I'm not sure what you mean by reunion shows. We have reunions every couple of years and she hadn't shown up at any of them because they're in California and she lived in Chicago. Sadly, Judy passed away this year from cancer.
@lasktguy Sorry to hear about this. I missed Judy Sowinski more than any of the other T-Birds. While all of the other Girls on the team looked like Centerfolds, Sowinski was that girl that always loved to kick ass. Judy Sowinski was my kind of Woman!
I loved Margie. You don't see too many six foot tall women around. I have a friend who skated back them and I asked about her and she told me that Margie was really cool. Whatever they wanted her to do she was fine, and also she knew she was too big.
This video shows what an amazing skater Mike Gammon was. After going over the rail the way he did he gets right up and back in the game. I'd have freaked out if that happened to me.
Wow, getting all "misty-eyes" here seeing my favorite Sports ROLLER DERBY and two very special Iconic teams: the SF Bay Bombers & the NY Chiefs. This Classic Derby skating sports is quite verocious/alot of physical "heart & strength" goes into it! Plus "speed & technic" kick-buns skills. Awesome Classic '70's footage of Laslo & seeing her teamates come to her rescue Tucker/Peanuts etc.,. and in the 2nd off my Roman (he & Peanuts are married)..'I was hoping Butler would come to the rescue.

Do they still have Roller Derby today? I live in Los Angeles, and I haven't heard one peep about the Thunderbirds.

@puck30 During these "Reunion Shows" that the T-Birds have been having, has Judy Sowinski ever showed up in any one of them? Judy is awesome!

Margie was a favorite--always a smile for the fans, no matter what team she played for.
