Obviously best america is not a diver. Divers bring tourism jobs to oceanside communities. Old relics become over time a great coral reef, increasing the fish population. Which is good for the environment, the fish population, and for us that love to dine on seafood. Divers don't dive where this is no reef.
In the "sink it or scrap it" conversation, I don't think ANY sailor wants to see a ship scrapped. I think if you polled US Navy sailors, almost every one would want their ship sunk as a reef or set up as a museum, or refitted and sent back out.
I saw my old ship scrapped, and it was gut-wrenching. Sinking is the way that all military ships should die.
@bestamerica well before warships are used for artificial reef they are gone through by specilists to make sure no contaminating materials are left on board. As far as an enemy raising a sunken warship to gain technology, Warships sunk for reefs are obsolescent, so what edge would an enemy gain. They are stripped out hulks.
@bestamerica artificial reefs are also known to increase fish populations, it gives them structure, it gives them a place of security from predators. Depending on depth it also increases tourism because people are going to want to dive it. Ya you can recycle it and use the steel for other purposes but if you sink it, then you are helping out more areas than if you just recycled it.

A bit sad I saw this ship underway in the South China Sea back in the 70s running at full (flank) speed.

@bestamerica no the scrap heap is no way for a warship to die, sinking it for a reef is the honorable way to dispose of a warship.
