He was extraordinary... I was raised on Hunky Dory, Ziggy, etc., a very different mood to this, but this gets me every time... there's a sincerity and a pain here that feels real and raw.
i cant believe how amazin and full the bnad sound, bowies voice when its on the edge of failing is the best he sounds man,,i listened to this album all the way through my teenage years and never noted the lyrical content-i was always happy just listening to bowies voice, and melody-theres no-one else like him.a total alien genius...i agree with wessys down there!! the messiah of rock n roll
I think these songs are basically a vignette concerning street hustlers (male prostitutes) told from the perspective of a very lonely fellow who's involved in this trade. The song pulses with the erotic temptation and lovelessness that go hand-in-hand with the dark world of money for sex.
@cubanzombie When I was young and heard the Diamond Dogs album it had a cartoonish sound to it...After 30 plus years my review is different. It is one of if not his best album. Listen to this song and Big Brother,We are the dead.......pure classic stuff.......
For sure they used some of this performance for the 1975 BBC 'Cracked Actor' Omnibus doc.. You can hear the edits on it. It's great to hear it in full. Thanx in a bunch :)
I love how smokey his voice got when he toured back then. After a few shows it would just find its way to this amazing tonal quality. As far as I know, all the audio we're listening too here was recorded at the Tower Theater in Philly over two separate nights. I was only 11 and couldn't go to those shows, but I tracked down every recording, bought every album, every poster, every book and read every article ever written about Bowie. My all time favorite, bar none.
I'm going with my other all time favorite, Panic in Detroit (live). The one that is very difficult to find, but that KMET in Hell-A played once in a while. Second would be that bitchin live version of M/Daydream with Mick chewing his teeth and prancing on stage. Third? Probably Drive-in Saturday, followed by Win, followed by Lady Grinning Soul. Maybe. Can I have a hundred more?.....
@SweetenThekitty96 I think it is about needing someone and then there are Boys and money and stuff like that and life and all and then poetry and the story about BOYS AND BOYS AND LIFE......if you want it.....BOYS.......and the wonderful wonderful Mister Bowie.....
@SweetenThekitty96 I'm pretty sure this song a futuristic illustration of what "loving" or "pursuit" would be like in a post apocalyptic society, in the middle section (candidate) there's sort of a hint of corruption being projected by the "narrator", although he's trying to gain your trust at the same time ("jump in the river holding hands"). basically, the entire album is telling you to watch your back when the future comes.
@SweetenThekitty96 Rent boys n carpet crawlers n all that mucky stuff lol, Absolutely incredible song though, probably the best song ever in my humble opinion.
We saw him at Bingley Hall Stafford uk, in a Cattle Shed, i think it was the Stage tour, Shit i am getting ols, Wembley Glass Spider, Manchester Main Road, i was standing on chair at wembley, and some female told me to sit down, i told her where to go, and 3 secs later i appolagised, behind me was Paula Yates, amazing gig, i still have distant slides, i got them out recently you can see davis Red suite coming down from spider, met him signed autograph, he went and left solid gold pen, chased car
I first heard this song on the "David Live' album, I was only litle and saved up for ages to buy it, when I got it I was on holiday with my parents and had no way to play it until I got home a week later, so I spent hours looking at the sleeve and reading the song list, I thought that the photo of David on the cover was the most amazing photo I had ever seen, how could someone look so cool?, when I finally got to listen to the album it was worth the wait.
@deejayzak Wow,I bought the David live on cassette around 1985 while still a teenager and said to myself........"This HAS to be the coolest record of all time" I could only imagine hearing this cosmic sound when it was brand new !
@seanissane While this very well could have been recorded at the Tower at some point, this is NOT the same track you hear on the first disc of "David Live". You can hear the difference in his first lyrical stanza: In this video, Bowie raises the word "city" UP a major 4th, as opposed to the CD, where he goes DOWN a major 3rd. You can also hear instrumentation in this video that you don't hear on the CD, namely synths.
'when it's good it's really good' .... this is really good.... one of his all time best.
this brings the summer of '74 back vividly when when every verse seared itself into my brain. the lyrics alone are genius, add the original album music, and vocals and you've got one totally perfect song... 'if you want it' .... 'get it here then' ...
Jeff.. You are one lucky person. I had to sit and read about the tour, Knowing that it would not be coming to England. And so little footage of the tour. But i do have both the Toronto Shows. Jeff get onto " David Bowie A Live Review" and tell us what you thought of the shows. All The Best . Mark
The BBC have 2 nights at the Universal Ampitheatre 74 , both had trax culled for the making of Cracked Actor , why wont they release the rest .. I would give thousands just to have a copy, instead we are subject to the mass boring eastenders and other shit .
OMG! There are no words for what this man and in particular this song mean to me. Eternally grateful to the uploader, even though it's a bit blurry. Happy as a lark here.
he is so charming! a great, great artist, how can he talk about sweet thing... is incredible, and the music, start sweet and finish in anxiety... is incredible, i love him
@Sherekhan69 yes I agree- good question actually: what are David's 5 best. Here's mine: Bewley Brothers, Sons of the Silent Age, New Career in a New Town, Moonage Daydream, Alladin Sane, Sweet Thing...that's six actually. Anyway what do you think?
This may have been recorded at the Tower Theater,Philly...not sure kid...but I was there twice in the one day''''Toronto...you know David...you know...
I was there to see the Diamond Dogs show TWICE IN ONE DAY!! Only in beautiful Toronto,Canada...the matinee show and the evening show...What a kick off to my summer that was ,as the shows plyed when we all finished our last year of high school...Went on to see David over 30 more times...met him twice ...now I can die in peace....met La Bowie and would give 1 Million Dollars for my experiences.
@repelghosts wahta kinda capitalistos are you. jose? Happy fucking you. Gimme the million for yer Bowian esperiensus. Let me know. We make tha handover under that bridge. Nothing wrong with The Bouwie though, just a little confused. See you then...

@repelghosts WOW amazing, tell us about the show! Which one did you see, the big set? I met Bowie in 2000, it was like meeting God. I have seen him 14 times starting with the Stage tour. Nobody can imagine what it is like seeing him live, you enter a ZONE like no other. My favorite show has to be Reality but every tour was beyond imagination. I remember seeing him in a club in Washington, that was when he first played "Little Wonder" live before Eartlhing came out.
Definitely is the band from the 74 tour, but this is not the recording which is on the David Live double lp.....so .....keen to know where is it from ...?
Im glad that youre older than me Makes me feel important and free Does that make you smile, isnt that me? Im in your way, and Ill steal every moment If his trade is a curse, then Ill bless you And turn to the crossroads, and hamburgers, and Boys, boys, its a sweet thing Boys, boys, its a sweet thing, sweet thing If you want it, boys, get it here, thing cause hope, boys, is a cheap thing, cheap thing Many thanks for this beauty song;)
Its safe in the city, to love in a doorway To wrangle some screens from the door And isnt it me, putting pain in a stranger? Like a portrait in flesh, who trails on a leash Will you see that Im scared and Im lonely? So Ill break up my room, and yawn and i Run to the centre of things Where the knowing one says Boys, boys, its a sweet thing Boys, boys, its a sweet thing, sweet thing If you want it, boys, get it here, thing cause hope, boys, is a cheap thing, cheap thing
